Keita Bates-Diop continues to make his case for Player of the Year.

On Sunday, in front of an uncharacteristically enthusiastic capacity crowd at the Value City Arena, the Ohio State Buckeyes (13-4, 4-0) completed an impressive upset of the No. 1 Michigan State Spartans (15-2, 3-1), 80-64, in their only matchup of the regular season.

The OSU win broke Sparty’s 14-game winning streak, and marked the 10th loss by a ranked team this weekend. It was also the third time in the two days that a top-five team lost to an unranked opponent. However, if I had to venture a guess, Ohio State won’t be unranked for long.

The energy in The Schottenstein Center was palpable from the tip, and something that Columbus hasn’t seen in many a year. As the Buckeyes were building their lead, the crowd’s excitement made the arena electric, and when MSU mounted their various comeback attempts, the crowd always seemed to be there to give the Buckeyes a boost.

However, the thing that really put the Buckeyes in position for their first signature win of the season was the play of junior Keita Bates-Diop. The fourth-year forward had a career night in the scoring column, but his value far surpassed the buckets he made.

With MSU scoring at will early, Bates-Diop kept the Buckeyes in the game nearly single-handedly. While Jaren Jackson Jr. got five of MSU’s first seven points, KBD scored the first four for the home team. However, despite Bates-Diop hitting his first two attempts, Sparty had the 11-6 lead at the first media timeout at 15:38.

Early in the game, the Buckeyes were making a concerted effort to isolate Kaleb Wesson on the block. He only hit one of his first five attempts from the field, but head coach Chris Holtmann clearly thought that Wesson’s athleticism could be a difference-maker for OSU.

Michigan State built its early lead on the strength of 4-for-6 shooting in the first 3:32, but went 0-8 over the next 4:34, which allowed Ohio State to take a 15-11 lead into the under-12 timeout. The Spartan scoring drought was finally snapped by a Cassius Winston three-pointer 5:30 after their previous bucket.

After the Buckeyes had gone without a bucket for nearly four minutes, C.J. Jackson hit a three from the top of the key, followed immediately by a Spartan triple from Joshua Langford. After a bucket in the paint for Kaleb Wesson, the score was tied at 20 with 7:52 left in the first half.

As sophomore Micah Potter has been getting healthy after early season injuries, Holtmann has been trying to get him some more playing time; especially in an effort to prevent Kaleb Wesson from finding foul trouble. However, Potter picked up three fouls in the first 15 minutes of the game, meaning that if the OSU coaching staff wanted to get Wesson a few minutes of rest, Kyle Young would have to brought into the game as an extremely-stretched wing.

As the clock ticked under two minutes in the first half, and with the score tied at 29, C.J. Jackson got a bucket off of an inbounds play after Gahanna-native Nick Ward was called for goaltending. Then, after KBD poked the ball loose as Ward was spinning to the basket, Andrew Dakich found him on the break, and he slammed it home.

After Ohio State opened a 36-29 lead, Michigan State’s Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo was called for a technical foul. Bates-Diop hit both free throws, and then with time running out, Dakich hit a three-pointer from about 28 feet to close the first 20 minutes on a 12-0 run, putting the Buckeyes up 41-29 at the intermission. The dozen points were the biggest deficit that the Spartans had faced all season, but it would get bigger from there.

— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) January 7, 2018

The Buckeyes were up double-digits over the No. 1 team in the country because they were taking care of the ball and forcing turnovers from the Spartans. In the first half, OSU only turned the ball over three times, while MSU had given it up nine times themselves; five of those turnovers came off of Buckeye steals.

Another reason that the home team was able to build 12-point advantage, was because they held Michigan State’s top-scorer, Miles Bridges, to just five points on 2-9 (22.2%) shooting in the half. Langford led the way for MSU with 10 points, and Jackson Jr. had seven.

One of the questions coming into the game was whether Michigan State’s defense could slow down the Buckeyes’ recent hot shooting. Fortunately for the Scarlet and Gray, they could not. In the first 20 minutes, OSU shot 45.9 percent (17-37) from the floor, but were actually better from the beyond the arc, hitting 5-of-9 (55.6%).

On the other side of the floor, MSU was 10-30 (33.3%) from the floor, and 3-11 (27.3%) from distance in the first 20 minutes.

For Ohio State, Bates-Diop was the unquestioned leader on the floor, pacing all scorers with 16 on 6-13 shooting, included 2-3 from deep. Jackson added seven and Kaleb Wesson had six.

In a battle of Central Ohio big men, the younger Wesson was often matched up against Ward. While the Westerville South Wildcat went 3-8 from the floor, he out scored the Lion who was 0-1, collecting his only first half points from the free throw line.

The second half opened in a thunderous way, as Kaleb Wesson at the top of the key found a driving Williams, who threw it down with authority. Then after Jackson Jr. hit a pair of free throws, Williams hit a three-pointer while McQuaid was called for a foul on Wesson, so the Buckeyes retained possession.

Then, on the inbound pass, Jackson found Bates-Diop who got the layup and one to extend the OSU lead to 49-31. In the early minutes of the period, the action was fast and furious, from six-point possessions to KBD rejecting an attempt in the lane to Jackson juking a defender out of his shoes.

— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) January 7, 2018

Just 3:11 into the half, Potter picked up his fourth foul while Kaleb Wesson was already on the bench with three of his home. Again with the traditional bigs on the bench, Holtmann went small bringing Young in to spell Wesson. However, shortly thereafter, Jackson hit a three-pointer to put the Buckeyes up 21, 59-38.

Though things started getting a little sloppy as MSU began pressing on offense and turning up the pressure on defense, the Buckeyes were able to increase their lead to 65-42 by shooting 75 percent (9-12) from the floor in the first 8:03 in the second half.

With 11 points, freshman Jackson Jr. picked up his fifth foul with 9:49 left in the half, meaning that a quarter of MSU’s points were now relegated to the bench for the remainder of the afternoon.

However, as should be expected from an Izzo-coached Michigan State team, Sparty refused to give up without a fight, as Langford and Bridges three-pointers sandwiched a Lourawis Nairn Jr. layup to get OSU’s nice lead down to 19, 69-50, at the under-8 media timeout.

Employing a zone-defense for the first time on the afternoon, MSU was able to keep the Buckeyes at bay and to go on a 10-0 run, cutting the lead to 69-55. However, Bates-Diop ended the scoring drought with a major slam that gave him 28 on the day, a new career-high. However, he wasn’t done just yet.

KBD was responsible for three of four Buckeye baskets, which put him over 30 points. The accomplishment made him the first OSU player to score more than 30 since D’Angelo Russell had 33 against Northwestern in 2015.

While guarding an unsuccessful Winston three-point attempt, Jackson came down awkwardly and had to leave the game with 14 points and six rebounds. However, the Buckeyes still led 79-62 with 1:45 remaining in the game, a margin that they would not be able to overcome.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will return to the hardwood on Thursday, Jan. 11 as they host the Maryland Terrapins at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on either ESPN or ESPN2.

Ohio State will look to stay undefeated in the Big Ten, but they’ll face their toughest test of the season later today when they host Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans at Value City Arena.

There has been many surprises around college basketball so far this season, but many weren’t expecting Ohio State to get off to such a strong start in Big Ten play. After defeating Wisconsin and Michigan in early December, Ohio State stepped back into conference play on Thursday night and defeated Iowa 92-81 in Iowa City.

Keita Bates-Diop led the way for Ohio State with 27 points, which tied his season-high, while the other four Buckeye starters reached double figures in the victory over the Hawkeyes. Ohio State jumped out to a 46-32 halftime lead, and Iowa wasn’t able to mount much of a challenge in the second half, improving the Buckeyes record to 10-2 when they are leading at halftime.

Not only did Bates-Diop lead Ohio State in scoring on Thursday night, but he pulled down 13 rebounds for the Buckeyes, giving him his seventh double-double of the season. Ohio State has won six of the seven games this year in which Bates-Diop has recorded a double-double, with the only loss coming to Butler in the PK80 Invitational in Portland. Ohio State is 628-272 all-time when they have a Buckeye record a double-double.

The win on Thursday night allowed for Chris Holtmann to become the first Ohio State men’s basketball coach to start conference play 3-0 in his first season. Ohio State last started Big Ten play 3-0 in 2016, but weren’t able to build much on the hot start, finishing the regular season with a 11-7 conference record, which was one of the reasons the Buckeyes weren’t invited to the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State has had trouble against Michigan State over the years, posting just a 56-68 record all-time against the Spartans. At least the Buckeyes have had a little more success against Michigan State in Columbus, with Ohio State winning 36 of the 59 meetings in Ohio’s capital city. This will mark the first time Ohio State has ever played a top ranked Michigan State team. The Buckeyes have had trouble in the past when they have played ranked Michigan State squads, as evidenced by their 9-22 record against Top 25 Michigan State teams.

Michigan State lost their second game of the year to Duke in the Champions Classic in Chicago, but the Spartans have been flawless since then, winning 14 games in a row, with each of those wins coming by double digits. Last time out, the Spartans had little trouble with Maryland in East Lansing, beating the Terrapins 91-61. Nick Ward led the Spartans with 16 points, as four Michigan State starters reached double figures. The Spartans hit 16 three-pointers in the victory, which tied for the third-best total in school history.

The Spartans come into today’s game with five players averaging at least 10 points per game. Miles Bridges leads the way with 16.9 points per game, while Gahanna native Nick Ward is averaging 15.4 points per game. Jaren Jackson Jr. is a Michigan State player who could bother Ohio State with his size. The 6-11 freshman is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and 3.3 blocks per game on the year, which means Ohio State will have to choose their shots carefully when going in the lane against Jackson.

Numbers to know

8-11

Ohio State is 8-11 all-time against top ranked teams. The last time Ohio State played a team sitting atop the rankings was in 2013, when the Buckeyes fell to Indiana 81-68. Ohio State’s last win against the No. 1 team in the country came in 2007, when the Buckeyes were ranked second and defeated Wisconsin, 49-48. Ohio State last won as an unranked team against the nation’s top team in 2005, defeating Illinois, 65-64, at Value City Arena.

80

Ohio State has improved on the offensive end dramatically this year. After reaching 80 points in just three games last year, the Buckeyes have scored at least 80 points in nine games this year, winning all nine of those games. The Buckeyes will need every point they can get against a Michigan State team that has scored at least 80 points in each of their last seven games.

30

After registering a season-high 35 assists in their previous game against Savannah State, Michigan State reached the 30 assist mark for the second game in a row on Thursday night against Maryland. This was the third time this season in which the Spartans have dished out at least 30 assists, with the other occurrence coming last month against Houston Baptist.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior from Pickerington continued to work his way up Ohio State’s all-time scoring list by scoring 18 points on Thursday night against Iowa. Tate passed Clark Kellogg for 31st place on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list, and set his sights on Jamar Butler, who is currently 30th with 1,313 points. The forward will have his work cut out for him today with some of the talented front court players that Michigan State has.

Kam Williams

With his 13 points on Thursday against Iowa, Williams eclipsed 900 points for his Ohio State career. Three of Williams’ field goals against the Hawkeyes were three-pointers, which gives him 153 triples for his career, tying him for fifth all-time at Ohio State with Scoonie Penn and Brent Darby. Williams has now reached double-digits in five of his last six games. The Buckeyes are going to need more hot shooting from the senior if they want to keep pace with the Spartans.

Michigan State

Miles Bridges

The sophomore is currently leading Michigan State with 16.9 points per game, and is thought of by many as one of the best players in the country. The forward brings a bit of everything to the table for the Spartans, as in three games he has reached double figures in rebounds, and has dished out at least five assists in four of the last seven games. Last time out against Maryland, Bridges registered 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks. Ohio State will have their hands full trying to slow down the talented forward.

Cassius Winston

Michigan State’s floor general is the sophomore from Detroit. Not only can Winston set his teammates up for buckets, but he can fill the score sheet when needed. Winston has scored double figures in all but three games this year, with his season-high coming against UConn, where he scored 28 points against the Huskies in the PK80. Winston is averaging 7.3 helpers per game this year, and dished out a season-high 13 assists against Savannah State, where Michigan State registered 35 assists.

The Buckeyes extended their win streak to six with their second consecutive win in East Lansing

Michigan State channeled their namesake and fought to defend their arena like the Spartans at Thermopylae, but this time around, they didn’t have Themistocles to bail them out, as the invading Ohio State Buckeyes men’s hockey team defeated Michigan State, 5-3.

The No. 8 Buckeyes didn’t quite roll over the Spartans with the same ease that they did on Friday night, where the game was effectively over a minute into the second period. The Spartans did more to fight back on Saturday, but Ohio State showed why they’re ranked No. 8 and went up three before giving up a late goal to MSU.

At one point, though, Michigan State actually got the lead in this one. Mitch Lewandowski scored first, just 7:14 into the game. That’d be the only lead they’d get, however, and it wouldn’t last long.

Ohio State scored twice within 17 seconds later in the first, with goals at 13:59 and 14:16 by Matthew Weis and Dakota Joshua, respectively.

On Weis’ goal, Tanner Laczynski, of course, had the primary assist as he threw it on net from the right faceoff circle. The puck somehow found the stick of Matthew Weis in front of MSU goalie Ed Minney, who sounds an ironically named large man wrestler, and put it in.

Matthew Weis tied the game at 1 with a power play goal in the first, assists to Laczynski and Ege. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/Q7H0wnu8wM

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 7, 2018

Just 17 seconds later, Joshua found a way to put it in off a deflection from a Matt Joyaux shot. Brendon Kearney somehow redirected it to Joshua and it somehow beat Minney. Pretty hard to stop that, if I do say so myself, as a former awful broomball goalie who allowed 11 goals in a playoff game. (The team, uh, didn’t invite me back this year.)

OSU outshot the Spartans 12-5 in the first and looked like they were on their way to another easy victory, before Michigan State put up their best effort and clogged the pass to a sweep.

They outshot the Buckeyes 9-6 in the second and scored the period’s only goal. Sam Saliba scored on a powerplay due to a Kevin Miller infraction for boarding at 3:34. Just 4:29 into the second and it was tied once again.

Ohio State apparently got sick of that and decided the third period wasn’t going to be one the Spartans wanted to remember.

John Wiitala scored 4:10 into the third with the teams playing 4-on-4 hockey, just seconds before the start of an MSU powerplay. Carson Gatt took a penalty to give OSU a powerplay, but Ronnie Hein took an unfortunate high sticking call 1:10 into the OSU man advantage. But then Wiitala struck.

Matt Joyaux hit Wiitala on one knee and hre one timed a shot past Minney and into the net for his sixth of the year. It was beautiful.

John Wiitala put the Buckeyes up 3-2 in the third with his sixth goal of the season, set up by Joyaux and Larocque. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/bZmINDnVSV

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 7, 2018

Just under seven minutes later, Joshua would put in his second of the game, unassisted and off a a faceoff win. Then Freddy Gerard really put it away 1:52 after that with his fifth of the year off a pass from Weis out of the left corner. He hit a streaking Gerard in front of the net on a one timer. Gerard had time to wind up and a slap shot from that close isn’t going to be stopped too often.

Freddy Gerard notched goal No. 5 on the year in the third period vs. the Spartans. Weis and Laczynski had the helpers on the goal. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/gDvwIvl8Cw

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 7, 2018

Tanner Laczynski had the secondary assist on the goal, his second helper of the night, and this one was pretty much put away.

Saliba would score his second of the game for MSU 36 seconds after Gerard’s goal to narrow it to a two goal deficit once again, but that’d be as close as the Spartans would get.

Ohio State showed why they’re a top-10 team once again, pouring it on the to the tune of 13 shots in the third period and three goals. Michigan State didn’t have an answer till it was already out of hand and then never got any closer.

The Buckeyes will be put to a harder test next weekend as they travel to State College for a weekend series with No. 14 Penn State, who swept the Buckeyes in Columbus in December. OSU hasn’t lost a game since then and hope to return the favor next weekend to the Nittany Lions.
