The Buckeyes survive a scare from their conference rivals to win their 4th in a row.

The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes didn’t exactly dominate Michigan State on Friday night in Columbus, but they came out on top with the 4-2 victory over their conference rival. OSU improves to 11-5-1 in conference play and continues to cement their second place position in the Big Ten conference.

Ohio State has now won 10 out of their last 11 and four in a row, continuing to crash the party of college hockey bluebloods. Notre Dame still stands as the titans of the conference and prohibitive Big Ten tournament favorites, but you really can’t count out the Buckeyes if they keep playing like this.

The Buckeyes scored at 4:06 of the first period and led for the rest of the game, but it was never easy. They just couldn’t pull away from a pesky Michigan State team. They may have come in at 3-12-1-1 in conference, but you still have to go and beat them. The Spartans made it tough, but they just didn’t have enough to catch up with the Buckeyes.

Ronnie Hein, who’s really come on of late, scored the aforementioned goal at 4:06 of the first, with assists from Mason Jobst and Wyatt Ege. Jobst flicked a shot towards the net from the point on the power play, where it found Hein’s stick on the doorstep. He found a way to slide it past John Lethemon in net for MSU, and it was 1-0.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) February 3, 2018

Freddy Gerard would score just 2:06 later to double up the Buckeye lead. OSU went in on a 3-on-2 and Gerard faked the shot until he froze Lethemon in net and fired it past him from the right faceoff circle. Matthew Weis and Ege had the assists.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) February 3, 2018

That’d be it for scoring in the first, but the Spartans wouldn’t surrender that easily. Logan Lambdin halved the OSU lead at 11:39 of the second. The officials reviewed the call but upheld it and the Ohio State lead was just one.

That’d last throughout the rest of the second and into the third, and Ohio State didn’t do themselves any favors in trying to change that. They had only 11 total shots on goal through the first two periods to MSU’s 14—allowing the Spartans to dictate play. Sure, OSU went up early and had a lead of some sort for nearly the last 56 minutes of play, but you’d still hope for more than 11 shots.

High event hockey favors the team with more talent, as the events will presumably regress closer to the mean as you have more of them, but Ohio State seemed content to sit on their lead and capitalize where they could. Credit where it’s due, they did pull it out and never allowed the Spartans to tie it up.

In the third, they’d add what turned out to be a key insurance goal, as Dakota Joshua made it 3-1 at 6:49 of the third, on a shortside tally with assists to Sasha Larocque and Sean Romeo of all people. Romeo stopped 25/27 shots in net and had the secondary assist on what turned out to be the game winning goal.

It turned out to be that because Michigan State would again pull within one at 12:21 of the third on a goal by Zach Osburn. That’d be as close as they got, however, as they’d have to pull the goalie and hope the man advantage tied it up.

It didn’t.

Joshua added his second of the period, in the open net, at 19:19, with assists going to Weis and Tanner Laczynski, who extended his point streak to 11 games, and that was that. Romeo held on and Ohio State got out of there with the win.

Lethemon only made 17 saves in net for the Spartans, while allowing three, which certainly makes it easier when you don’t pepper the goalie with many shots on goal.

We’ll see if Ohio State can do that on Saturday night when they again host the Spartans in Columbus. If they can, the game probably won’t be too close.

With a share of the Big Ten title on the line, the Buckeyes head to Happy Valley to face Penn State.

“Dubbed as the `Dual of the Millennium’ and the `Super Bowl of College Wrestling’ by some, No. 2 Ohio State (12-0, 7-0 B1G) faces No. 1 Penn State (11-0, 7-0 B1G) Saturday (Feb. 3) evening at 8 p.m. ET inside Rec Hall on the PSU campus.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

Saturday’s Big Ten wrestling matchup between Ohio State and Penn State is one of the most anticipated meets of the year. It’s such a big deal that the bout will even be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network, with the victor at least claiming a share of the 2018 Big Ten regular season title.

The match will feature 18 nationally-ranked wrestlers, eight NCAA Champions (for 10 total national titles) and 13 All-Americans. That’s a pretty loaded lineup from just two programs.

Buckeye icon Kyle Snyder missed Ohio State’s last two matches, as he was busy competing in -- and winning — the 2018 Golden Grand Prix Yarygin in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Capturing his second Yarygin title, Snyder became the first American male to ever win more than once, and earned Most Outstanding Foreign Wrestler honors for his efforts.

Heading into the back-stretch of the season, Snyder’s time as a Buckeye is quickly drawing to a close. His last collegiate loss was in March 2015, over 34 months (~1,050 days) ago. Snyder being undefeated is only part of Ohio State’s dominance of late. Several other Buckeyes are undefeated heading into Saturday’s matchup, including: Myles Martin (22-0), Luke Pletcher (21-0), Kollin Moore (18-0), and Cody Burcher (6-0).

It isn’t just the Buckeyes who have been on a win-streak either. Penn State is riding a 42-match win streak, having not lost a dual (as a team) since Feb. 2015 -- including 23 straight Big Ten wins.

Stephanie Mavunga has been named one of 10 finalists for the Katrina Mcclain Award as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State women’s basketball team was surrounded by accolades and buzz even before the first tipoff of the season. Widely expected to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, Kelsey Mitchell decided to return to finish things with her squad, and her teammates have kept them in the national conversation.

Mavunga has claimed a team-best 11 double-doubles this season, and is averaging 15.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. The Buckeye leads the group of 10 finalists for the awards in rebounds per game and efficiency, and claims a top-three spot in almost every other category considered.

In March, the group of 10 will be narrowed down to five finalists, who will then be voted on by the Ms. McClain-Pittman and the Hall of Fame selection committees. Fans will also get a chance to VOTE.

The winner of the 2018 Katrina McClain Power Forward Award will be announced during ESPN2’s telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women’s Final Four in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, March 30.

Per source, Greg Schiano is expected to interview for the Patriot’s defensive coordinator position when Patricia goes to Detroit.

— Gary Tanguay (@Gary_Tanguay) February 2, 2018

It seems like we’ve been talking about Greg Schiano leaving the Ohio State football coaching staff for months now, and yet there hasn’t been any movement. Initially pegged for the head coaching gig at Tennessee, a verbose fanbase threw that deal in the trash, and despite rumors connecting him to other positions, nothing gained any sort of traction.

First, Buckeye fans had to deal with rumors of Ryan Day joining Mike Vrabel’s staff with the Tennessee Titans — only to see Kerry Coombs make the move to the NFL instead (and Day landing a bigger role among the Ohio State coaching staff). By now, it was largely expected that Schiano would firmly be in Columbus for the 2018 season, but now things are once again cloudy heading deeper into the offseason.

Schiano was the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two years before a three-year hiatus eventually led him to Buckeye Nation in 2016. He should have no problem adjusting back to the professional side of things.

We take a final look at what the Buckeyes need to add on National Signing Day.

It’s the worst kept secret in the world that the Ohio State Buckeyes needs to close its 2018 recruiting class with an offensive tackle (or two). Whether they can fill that need by adding either Nicholas Petit-Frere or Rasheed Walker will have to wait until National Signing Day, but with 24 players already in the class, landing a tackle is far and away the biggest story for the Buckeyes heading into next Wednesday.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn give a final primer on National Signing Day, how they think Ohio State’s class will finish out, whether Urban Meyer has any late-cycle Vonn Bell-esque tricks up his sleeve, and more, including:

  • Whether the early signing day meant less three-star “developmental” signings, a la Darron Lee or Tyvis Powell.
  • Why this might be the deepest class in modern Ohio State recruiting.
  • What Kerry Coombs’ departure to the Tennessee Titans means for the coaching staff, and his legacy in Columbus.

The guys also discuss how the basketball team has transformed from being a fun story about an improving team, to one with legitimate postseason aspirations, why it’s important to have a player like Keita Bates-Diop come tournament time, and a quick preview of the upcoming game at Purdue.

After a runner-up finish in 2017, the Buckeyes look to win it all this season.

After a record-setting, 16-5 season in 2017 culminating in an NCAA runner-up finish, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team begins its pursuit of a national championship as it opens its 2018 campaign tomorrow at Cleveland State.

Head coach Nick Myers is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Buckeyes, accruing an 85-63 overall record in his time in Columbus. He has taken Ohio State to the NCAA quarterfinals three times since 2013, and led the Buckeyes to a school-record 16 wins in 2017.

Despite their finish last season, which ended in a 9-6 loss to top-seeded Maryland in the finals of the NCAA Tournament, Ohio State lacrosse is entering the 2018 season as underdogs not only nationally, but in the Big Ten as well. The Buckeyes were picked to finish second in the conference behind reigning champs Maryland.

While the Terps, who enter the season as the No. 2 team in the nation behind Duke, are expected to pick up pretty much where they left off last season, Ohio State has a lot of pieces to pick up after the departure of six players to the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft.

The Big Ten is not a traditional lacrosse powerhouse like the ACC or Big East, and geographic boundaries matter possibly even less in this sport than in revenue-generating ones. (Denver is in the Big East, while Ohio State used to be in the same conference as Air Force.) However, the addition of traditional lacrosse schools, namely Maryland and Johns Hopkins, has boosted the Big Ten’s reputation in the sport, especially with an all-Big Ten NCAA final last season.

Ohio State’s losses were reflected in the USILA preseason poll, as the Buckeyes enter the weekend ranked No. 7 in Division I. They’ve lost a lot of firepower, especially on the offensive side of the field, but are looking for young players to step up and improve on last season’s result.

Major themes

Strength of schedule

With a small pool of Division I lacrosse teams, top squads are bound to play one another on a regular basis. This season seems to be an extreme version of that parity, as a majority the teams that Ohio State faces are ranked in the USILA poll. Of the 14 teams on Ohio State’s schedule, nine are in the top-20. Four (Maryland, Denver, Notre Dame and Rutgers) are in the top-10. This schedule is a benefit to the Buckeyes, as they would likely face many of the same teams down the road in the NCAA Tournament field.

Big Ten supremacy

Big Ten lacrosse as a whole is a somewhat confusing concept. Just six teams are in contention each year, one of whom is former East Coast power Johns Hopkins. Even more perplexing, is the fact that Rutgers is actually good at lacrosse. And with Maryland winning two of the three Big Ten Tournaments to date, the newcomers to the conference have had an early advantage in the young lacrosse league. 2018 will mark the fourth season of Big Ten lacrosse, and the conference’s reputation continues to expand. Rutgers is sitting at No. 8 nationally, ahead of No. 11 Penn State and No. 12 Johns Hopkins. Michigan is the lone school in the conference not listed in the top-20 nationally. In this highly-competitive conference, Maryland was picked to repeat as champs with Ohio State behind as runner-up.

Defense Urban Meyer would be proud of

Despite losing a three-year starter at goalie, the Buckeyes return their starting trio of low defenders from 2017. Led by Ohio State’s first-ever first team All-American senior Ben Randall, the Buckeyes finished 2017 with the nation’s 11th-best scoring defense, giving up under nine goals per game. Randall is joined by senior captain Erik Evans and junior Matt Borges. While the unit remains intact, it will be challenged this season with an inexperienced goalie and faceoff specialist, potentially leading to greater time of possession for opposing offenses. Still, the group has proven itself worthy against some of the top offenses in college lacrosse, and it will be the staple of Ohio State’s team heading into this season.

Key losses

Jake Withers

Ohio State lost two of its top three scorers from last season, but the weapon they will likely miss the most is in the midfield. Faceoff specialist Jake Withers was the highest-rated of the six players selected in the MLL Collegiate Draft, taken No. 9 overall by the Atlanta Blaze. Withers was a two-time Big Ten Specialist of the Year, having won 641 career faceoffs and collected 351 groundballs. His five goals and six assists on the season don’t adequately reflect the advantage Withers gave the Buckeyes in maintaining possession from the faceoff and beyond. Sophomore midfielder Christian Feliziani took 54 faceoffs last season in relief of Withers, but duties this year may fall to true freshman Justin Inacio.

Tom Carey

Carey started all but two games in goal over three seasons with Ohio State after transferring from Bryant. Last season, Carey played more than 1,000 minutes in goal, while Matthew Schmidt and Nick Doyle, his backups, played less than 200 total. The senior finished the season saving 54.3 percent of shots on goal, allowing just 8.31 per game. He was eventually selected in the eighth round of the MLL Collegiate Draft by the Denver Outlaws. Schmidt, a senior who won his pair of starts last season against Marquette and Bellarmine, is the most likely candidate to replace the third team All-American goalie.

Returning leaders

Tre Leclaire

The sophomore, listed as a combination of attackman and midfielder, exploded onto the scene last year, scoring a team-high 49 goals on the season--the most ever by a freshman. He came off the bench for the first five games of 2017 before earning a starting role for the remainder of the season, ultimately garnering third team All-American honors at the end of the season and being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Leclaire was named to the USILA Preseason Watch List for 2018 Player of the Year, and will be the de facto leader of Ohio State’s decimated attack.

Ben Randall

A Cincinnati native, Randall was a first team All-American last season after starting all 21 games for the Buckeyes. Like Leclaire, the senior was named to the USILA Preseason Watch List. A transfer from Stony Brook, where he started 34 games in two seasons, Randall has upped his game since arriving in Columbus. He collected 50 groundballs last season and caused 13 turnovers as the lynchpin of a stifling defense.

New additions

Justin Inacio

Four of the nation’s top-50 recruits are coming to Columbus this season, and chief among them is Inacio, the No. 7 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class. The freshman from Ontario is the top faceoff specialist in his year, and a member of the Canadian U-19 national squad. With the loss of Withers to the MLL Draft, Inacio will be competing with Christian Feliziani for the starting role. Both will have big shoes to fill early on this season as they seek to give the Buckeyes the edge in possession that they enjoyed throughout Withers’ time in Columbus.

Jackson Reid

Another Canadian on Ohio State’s roster, Reid came into Ohio State as the No. 25 recruit in the country. Listed as a midfielder on the roster, Reid could end up playing low attack alongside Leclaire. In a scrimmage last fall against the MLL’s Ohio Machine, Reid scored Ohio State’s first three goals in the Buckeyes’ 12-10 win. Reid could help fill the crucial scoring void left by the departure of Eric Fannell to graduation last season.
