The Buckeyes dish out a scholarship to another St. Thomas Aquinas product.

Even though this weekend was pretty laid back on the recruiting trail for the Ohio State Buckeyes, they still found their name in the headlines.

Buckeyes offer 2019 DB


Ohio State has offered numerous former and current standouts from St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. From the look of things, it doesn’t look like Urban Meyer and company are finished trying to add Raiders to the Buckeyes roster.

Like many of his current teammates including, Daniel Carter, Jaden Davis, Marcus Dumervil, and Derek Wingo have received throughout the process, class of 2019 four-star safety Jordan Battle took to his Twitter page on Friday morning to share with the world that Ohio State offered him a chance to continue his education and football career in Columbus.


Talented enough to play either safety or cornerback on the next level, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound Battle adds the scholarship from Ohio State to a solid list of offers that currently consists Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and well over a dozen other programs from across the country.

As a junior last season at St. Thomas Aquinas, Battle, the 29th safety and 347th overall prospect in the class of 2019, per the latest 247Sports Composite Rankings, accounted for 55 total tackles to help pace the Raiders to an overall record of 12-3 and another deep run in the Florida state playoffs.

4-star QB thinks OSU offer is “pretty cool”


Just hours after earning his offer from Meyer, Ryan Day, and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff nearly two weeks ago, four-star quarterback Grant Gunnell decommitted from the Aggies of Texas A&M.

Fresh on the market and pegged as one of the top available signal callers in the class of 2019, the Houston native stayed close to home to participate in the The Opening Regional Camp held at Legacy Field in Katy, Texas on Sunday.

After having the chance to strut his stuff against some of the most sought after prospects in the southwest, Gunnell caught up with VYPE Houston to break down recruiting, which included his offer from OSU.


“It’s pretty cool. Just knowing their history and everything, and Coach Meyer, and Coach Day. So it will be cool to get up there and talk to them.” Gunnell, who has passed for over 11,000 yards and 142 touchdowns during his high school career at St Pius X, stated on his recruitment with the Buckeyes.

Reportedly set to visit Columbus in early March, Meyer, Day, and crew will finally get their chance to show Grant, who is also feeling the love from programs such as Oklahoma State, LSU and Arkansas, what it would be like to to be a student-athlete at Ohio State.

Looking for a 2019 quarterback to bring into the fold, his visit is a big one for both sides. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Sure, Sparty came out on top, but the journey to get there was a wild one.

On Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison. Wisc., the Michigan State Spartans cemented their claim as regular season Big Ten Champions with a down-to-the-wire 68-63 win against the Wisconsin Badgers.

Tom Izzo’s Spartans began the season as the No. 2 team in the AP Poll, and ended the regular season in the same spot. As expected, they took home the regular season crown and are now headed to New York City for the conference tournament—one where they’ll have the No. 1-seed.

Yeah, this was a predictable (and safe bet) outcome for how the top-spot in the Big Ten would finish once the season wrapped up. But to get to this point, there were tons of surprises, upsets, and down right zaniness.

The biggest of the surprises are none other than the Ohio State Buckeyes. In Chris Holtmann’s first season at the helm, he strung together nine straight conference wins to begin his time at OSU. That’s the most ever by a head coach in his first year at a Big Ten institution since Sam Barry recorded 11 straight victories for Iowa in 1923. Overall, OSU ended the regular season with a 23-7 (14-3) record, including a huge 80-64 win over then-No. 1 Michigan State on Jan. 7.

Sparty won 16 of 18 games against Big Ten foes, but got the doors blown off in Columbus against OSU. The place where the Spartans fell to the Buckeyes, was also the place where the Bucks, who were 9-0 to start conference play, would get beat by a buzzer-beater, banked-in three pointer by Penn State’s Tony Carr.

Ohio State’s kryptonite this year were the Nittany Lions. In the second meeting between the two, which happened on Feb. 15, the Buckeyes got down by as many as 30 before falling, 79-56. That loss was followed up by another loss (against Michigan), which enabled the Spartans to jump back into the driver’s seat for control of the Big Ten standings.

But, the overall journey was pretty amazing. On Feb. 23, the semifinalists for the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year Award were announced. Making the cut was Holtmann. Sure, Texas Tech’s Chris Beard, Virginia’s Tony Bennett and Auburn’s Bruce Pearl are on that list, too, but who really expected the Bucks to be in the hunt for a conference title, let alone being a contender in the NCAA Tournament? In the first week of December 2017, OSU’s national championship odds hovered between 300-to-1 and 200-1; Michigan State’s odds were around 4-to-1.

On both sides of the ball, forward Keita Bates-Diop played a pivotal role in Ohio State’s success. He recorded 18 double doubles on the season, and showed up huge in games against Michigan State and Purdue. KBD’s heroics in conference play propelled him into shortlists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year and Wooden Award. Without him in the equation, the Bucks wouldn’t have had a consistent rebounding presence as well as a constant No. 1 shooter.

But flashback to late November. Who would’ve expected Ohio State to be this good this year? Especially after they let a 15-point lead slip away to Butler in the final six minutes of the PK80 Invitational. At that time, the Buckeyes felt like an NIT team; but within a few weeks, they flipped the script and became a force to be reckoned with. A combination of Holtmann bringing the spark, in addition to Bates-Diop growing into a top conference performer, was what it took to get the tour de force campaign underway.

The game where everything came together for OSU was against then-No. 3 Purdue on Feb. 7. The Boilermakers led for most of the night, and carried a 14-point lead in the second half. However, a lineup change (and a change of tactics) was enough to chip the lead away, leading to KBD getting a put-back basket with less than three seconds left in the game to seal the one-point, 64-63, win in West Lafayette, Ind.

While Purdue didn’t struggle last season and carried a No. 20 ranking in the preseason AP Poll, they were a constant presence at the top of the conference standings. At one point, Matt Painter’s program was the No. 3 team in the land. The loss to OSU kicked off a three-game skid for the Boilermakers—one that featured road losses to the Spartans and Badgers. Before the skid, Purdue was nearly taken down by last place Rutgers on the road.

Teams that looked nearly unstoppable one week, were trying to get off the slippery slope of losses the next. Ohio State and Purdue were two examples of that this season—but, if we’re being honest, the fact that both these teams made pushes well inside the top-10 is something to hang their heads high about. Michigan State, while carrying the torch as the conference leader, spent the better part of February avoiding big upsets. They escaped by Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa, Purdue and Wiscy.

Then we take a look at Nebraska, who has flown under the radar as the No. 4 team in the conference. By holding off Michigan for that fourth spot, the Cornhuskers join MSU, OSU and Purdue as teams that get the double-bye at the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden. Like Ohio State’s climb, who thought Nebraska was going to be a top-4 team in the conference back at the start?

Whatever Tim Miles did since the end of last year, he should keep doing it. The Cornhuskers ended 2016-17 with an abysmal 12-19 mark overall. In the conference, times were rough for the Lincoln, Neb., program as they saw only six wins in 18 games. (That was one less win than what Thad Matta’s program had against B1G foes.)

This season, Nebraska went 22-9 overall, and brushed off an early loss against St. John’s. For most of the year, that loss to the Red Storm looked bad; the team went on an 11-game losing streak before getting monumental wins against top-5 programs, Duke and Villanova, in back-to-back games.

Unlike years past, a condensed Big Ten schedule took place, forcing teams to play two conference games in early December to compensate for the early start time of the conference tournament. On top of that, teams had to play a handful of games in a tighter window. As you can imagine, playing more games with less time to rest causes all sorts of problems. If you look back to OSU’s season finale against Indiana, both teams looked exhausted.

The season took a bunch of twist and turns, and ended with a predictable team winning the regular season crown. But, like anything, the journey getting there was the fun part.

That’s especially true with Buckeye Basketball being back again. Now, we’ll see what kind of craziness March brings us. It always does.

Overall it looks like they aren't doing much better at their new school than they did at Ohio State. Basically I'll say the first 4 (above) were grossly overrated. Lyle (at least) could put up some points; however, (apparently) he wasn't a "good fit" for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes finish No. 2 in the Big Ten and will host Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday

The Buckeyes already had the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament locked up following last weekend; and likely secured an NCAA tournament bid as well. And they still went out and spanked Wisconsin back-to-back, 6-2 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday.

Wisconsin took a 2-1 lead into the third period on Friday, but ended up losing by four. On Saturday, the Badgers didn’t want that to happen again, so they decided to just never score at all; Tommy Nappier shut them out.

With the sweep, Ohio State finished 21-8-5 overall and 14-8-2 in conference. They topped all teams who were in the Big Ten in 2016-17. Unfortunately, Notre Dame joined this year and they finished eight points ahead of the Buckeyes in conference.

Finishing No. 2 isn’t exactly horrible, though, and the Buckeyes will host Michigan State in a best-of-three series this coming weekend in Columbus. If Ohio State wins, they would face the second lowest advancing team, as Notre Dame has the number one seed and a bye. The Irish will face the lowest ranking advancing seed.

Notre Dame won three out of four from the Buckeyes this season, so taking the conference crown from them won’t be easy, but all that the Buckeyes can do for now is take care of business against MSU; whom they beat three out of four times this season. They also avoid Notre Dame until the championship, so that helps too.

Anyway, onto this weekend’s games. On Friday, Ohio State came out and promptly got blitzed in the first period, getting outshot 15-6 with Wisconsin taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a Linus Weissbach goal. If that’s not the most Wisconsin name ever, I don’t want to hear what is.

The second would be a much more even affair, with OSU outshooting UW 12-11; both teams notched a single goal. Ohio State would tie it up on a Luke Stork cross ice pass that got past UW goalie Kyle Hayton and gave Dakota Joshua a wide open net for his twelfth of the year.


Wisconsin would tie it up at 16:26 of the second, however, Matthew Freytag put the Badgers up 2-1 heading into the second intermission.

I think anyone associated with UW would agree that the third period went... poorly.

Ohio State took 16 shots and five of them found the back of the net. Tanner Laczynski tied it up at two apiece on the powerplay with his 13th of the year at 1:41. Next, Dakota Joshua gave Ohio State their first lead of the night with his 13th at 2:22. Then, Christian Lampasso scored his seventh at 10:26 to double Ohio State’s lead and make it 4-2. Laczynski scored again at 15:51 and his fourteenth made it 5-2. And finally, Brendon Kearney added salt in the wound and scored his fourth at 17:07 to make it 6-2, where the scoreboard would finally stand at the end of regulation.

Woof. Sean Romeo stopped all 12 UW shots in the period and Kyle Hayton saved 11 out of 16. That’s a .688 save percentage in the period. Up that by 200 points and you’re still having a poor game.

So Ohio State exerted their will in the third and blew out Wisconsin in the end. But Wisconsin received votes in the USCHO poll. They can’t be too bad. This wouldn’t happen again... right?

Wisconsin made sure that it wouldn’t happen again, by not gaining a lead, or even scoring a goal, in Saturday night’s matchup. OSU even played their backup goalie, Tommy Nappier. Unfortunately for the Badgers, Nappier’s save percentage is now .956 on the year after this game. Sean Romeo has surpassed any reasonable expectation for him this season and Nappier’s save percentage is 28 points higher.

The first period actually ended up scoreless in Saturday’s matchup, with Wisconsin outshooting the Buckeyes 11-7. Then things started to go poorly again for the team from Madison.

Ohio State outshot them 13-8 in the second with Mason Jobst scoring his 15th of the year off of a pass from Kearney at 6:43 of the second. It would turn out to be the game winner.


Then the Buckeyes got that classic, and totally normal, 3-on-1 shorthanded opportunity after too many UW defenders got caught too deep in the offensive zone. John Wiitala passed to Gordi Myer who passed back to Wiitala who then passed to Jobst and he put in his second of the night.

From thereon, it would be all about the senior walk-on who has come back this season to play a key bottom-six role for the Buckeyes.

Christian Lampasso would score twice on Senior Night, first on a partial breakaway, sprung on a pass by Kearney.


His eighth of the season cemented a three-goal second period for the Buckeyes. But, he wasn’t done yet.

He scored his ninth of the year on an empty net. As he put it toward the net, a UW player threw his stick at the puck to block it. The referees awarded the goal on the illegal play and OSU took a 4-0 lead.

UW wouldn’t be able to get a single one of their 31 shots past Nappier, and Ohio State clinched the season-ending sweep of the Badgers on Senior Night with the 4-0 victory.

So, onto host Michigan State went the Buckeyes. They sit at No. 6 in the nation with postseason NCAA tournament seeding on the line. A Big Ten championship is a possibility. But first, they have to win a best-of-three against a team that they should beat. Let’s see if they can starting this Friday, March 2 in Columbus.

The Buckeyes overcame their largest deficit of the season to stay undefeated.

The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team stayed undefeated with a 12-11 overtime win over Jacksonville on Sunday. The Buckeyes came back after being down as many as three in the fourth quarter to improve to 4-0 on the season.

While Jacksonville won the opening faceoff, senior attackman Colin Chell converted the first goal of the game for the Buckeyes with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter. A goal by junior attackman Gale Thorpe a minute and a half later gave the Buckeyes what would be their biggest lead of the day at 2-0. The Dolphins cut the lead to one at the close of the first on an unassisted goal from McLean Chicquen.

In the second quarter, however, things got hairy for the Buckeyes. Jacksonville scored four-straight goals to go up 5-2 and give Ohio State its first deficit since the opening minutes of the season against Cleveland State. Finally, an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Ryan Terefenko with 6:32 remaining in the half broke the onslaught and cut the Dolphin’s lead to two. Freshman midfielder Jackson Reid found the back of the net three minutes later to close the gap to 5-4 at the half.

Reid opened the third quarter with another unassisted goal to tie things at five-all, but Jacksonville pulled ahead once again, rattling off three straight goals of their own to go up 8-5 with five minutes remaining in the third. Chell connected once again to stem the flow of scoring and draw within two with 3:13 left in the quarter. The Dolphins, however, had the last laugh in the third, adding a final goal by Gavin Dembeck to bring their lead to 9-6 heading into the final quarter of play.

Terefenko came through quickly, scoring unassisted just 37 seconds into play. Jacksonville bounced back with a goal of its own, but Ohio State answered with a man-up goal from Thorpe, assisted by Chell, and an unassisted attempt from junior attackman Jack Jasinski to draw within one. Jacksonville’s Jeremy Winston put the Dolphins up by two with just 2:11 remaining in the quarter, seemingly sealing the upset win for Jacksonville. But that’s when the hero of last season--sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire--came through with two goals in the final two minutes of play to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the perfect ending to the comeback win, Leclaire, assisted by junior midfielder Logan Maccani, scored the game winner for the Buckeyes.

Leclaire led Ohio State with three goals on the day, all of which came in the final minutes of play. Chell, Reid, Thorpe and Terefenko each had two goals apiece, with six players scoring in all. Overall shots were 19-14 in favor of Ohio State. Senior goalie Matthew Smidt had 11 saves for the Buckeyes to Jacksonville’s 12. Sophomore Christian Feliziani and freshman Justin Inacio split faceoffs for the Buckeyes, going a collective 13-26 on the day. Ground balls were 31-25 in favor of the Buckeyes, led by Inacio’s five.

Next up, Ohio State is scheduled to face Marquette on Friday, March 2, in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Pontiac Michigan.

The Buckeyes will tip off their postseason run on Friday

By virtue of their last-second, double-overtime win against Indiana on Friday night, the No. 16 Ohio State Buckeyes secured themselves one of the top two seeds in next week’s Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament. From there, all eyes of Buckeye Nation turned to Sunday’s matchup between No. 2 Michigan State and Wisconsin.

If the Badgers could upset the Spartans, Ohio State would earn the tournament’s No. 1 seed and a share of the B1G regular season title. If Sparty were to win, the Buckeyes would officially be the tourney’s No. 2 team— still pretty incredible given the preseason expectations.

However, with MSU’s 68-63 victory this afternoon, Tom Izzo and company are again the Big Ten’s top-team heading into the conference tournament. That means that the Buckeyes will open up their postseason run on Friday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. ET from Madison Square Garden in New York City. They will take on the winner of Thursday’s No. 7 vs. No. 10 game. The contest will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

Currently Penn State is slotted in as the seventh-seed, and Northwestern at 10. However, that could change depending on the outcome of the Nittany Lions’ game against Nebraska later this afternoon.

Should things remain unchanged by the end of the day, I won’t need to tell you that two of Ohio State’s three conference losses this season came at the hands of Penn State. However, they did beat Northwestern in a hard-fought mid-January matchup, 71-65. The Buckeyes could also have a rematch against Indiana, should Nebraska beat PSU.

As the rest of the Big Ten Tournament seedings solidify themselves throughout the afternoon, we will keep you updated on how they impact the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Tournament plans.

No matter how the Buckeyes fare at the world’s most famous arena, they are guaranteed at least a week and a half of rest before they return to the NCAA Tournament. Since the Big Ten saw fit to move the men’s basketball tournament up a week to hold it at MSG— the schedule change came so that the arena could host the Big East Tournament during the normal window— all Big Ten teams will be recuperating as other schools battle for their conference crowns.

However, late last week, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany admitted that the condensing of the schedule to accommodate the move to Madison Square Garden “wasn’t healthy” for the players, and it is not something that the conference will do again.

The wear and tear of the compacted season has seemingly hit the already thin and inexperienced Ohio State squad hard coming down the stretch. Even though they won their final two games— following a two-game skid against PSU and Michigan—, the Buckeyes have looked tired for nearly a month, especially with their Big Ten Player of the Year frontrunner, Keita Bates-Diop.

KBD appears to have been the most impacted by the schedule, as he has had to carry so much of the team on both ends of the floor. However, the nearly week-long break before the B1G Tournament, and then the ensuing week and a half off before the Big Dance, could get the Buckeyes back to the energized style of play that was their calling card when they were playing their best ball of the season.

The Buckeyes claimed the conference championship for the first time in 25 years.

It was a big weekend for the Ohio State men’s track and field team, who were able to beat out Nebraska in the final meet of the day to win the Big Ten Championship. This marks the first indoor conference title for the men’s team since 1993, and the fifth indoor title for a Buckeye team under coach Karen Dennis (the first four with the women’s team).

It came down to the final 4x400 relay, with the Buckeyes holding on to a narrow 2-point lead over the Cornhuskers. Ohio State foursome of Asa Burke, Nick Gray, Drelan Bramwell and Andre Jeff were ready to defend their lead, and did so while also setting a school record with a time of 3:05.09 — good enough to win gold in the event and secure the Big Ten title for the Buckeyes.


Nick Gray contributed to more than just the 4x400 relay, he claimed gold in the 200m dash — his third consecutive title in the event — and set a new school, as well as meet records in the process, with a time of 20.45. He’s bested his own time the last three times he’s won. He also scored in the 60m dash, winning bronze with a time of 6.72 — just one spot behind football player Kendall Sheffield, who finished with a time of 6.68.

Other Buckeye contributors included triple jump duo DaJuan Seward and Zack Bazile; Seward finished having gone a career-best distance of 15.77m (for a bronze medal), and Bazile finished just behind his with a jump of 15.69m. Mid-distance (800m) runner Alex Lomong finished at No. 4 with a time of 1:51.06, and long distance runner Luke Landis finished No. 6 in the mile and Ryan Harrington finished No. 8 in the 600m race.

It’s been over two decades since the last time the men’s team were the inddoor Big Ten Champions, and they should be celebrating for quite awhile.
