The Buckeyes are in a battle with Wolverines and Spartans for Lance Dixon.

It’s been no secret that the Ohio State Buckeyes have made a push over the last week in sending out new offers. On Wednesday, that theme stayed the same, as more offers were sent out.

Let’s take a look at who were the latest prospects to pick up the coveted Scarlet and Gray offer.

Into the state up North

With Kerry Coombs no longer on staff, it’s a big blow to the Buckeyes in regards to their recruiting efforts in enemy territory. In the post-Coombs world, Urban Meyer and his staff will need to pick up the pace when it involves recruiting in places like Michigan.

On Wednesday, OSU went back into that state of North, and sent out an offer to 2019 outside linebacker prospect Lance Dixon. Dixon made his latest offer known on Twitter.

Blessed to Receive an offer from THE Ohio State University ⚪pic.twitter.com/NCkz3HDIgU

— A c e ™️ (@Lance__Dixon) January 31, 2018

The 6-foot-2 OLB hails from West Bloomfield, Mich., which is about 40 minutes from Ann Arbor, and a little over an hour to East Lansing. Naturally, both Michigan powerhouse schools (Michigan and Michigan State) have sent him offers already.

As a matter of fact, the Wolverines and Spartans aren’t the only Big Ten schools to send in their offer to Dixon; since Dec. 5, Wisconsin, Indiana and Minnesota have joined Ohio State as schools that have reached out to the 2019 stud.

While only a three-star, the latest offers may help push his overall grade up the charts. According to the 247sports composite, Dixon comes in as the 417th best recruit, 23rd best OLB, and 11th best prospect out of Michigan.

After making his deal known to the public, quite a few people were ecstatic on Dixon’s Twitter timeline about Ohio State being the latest school to give him an offer. Could those retweets help push the Buckeyes into the conversation for another Michigan recruit? If so, here’s what the Scarlet and Gray could be getting from Dixon if he chooses to take his talents to Columbus.

Zone 6’s latest offer

On Tuesday, OSU sent out an offer to 2020 wide receiver Porter Rooks. If you thought Zone 6 was taking a break from cranking out offers, you would be mistaken.

Wednesday brought another membership offer within the Buckeye receiving corps, as three-star 2019 WR Elijah Higgins (Austin, TX / Bowie) was the latest pass-catcher to have the chance to suit up in Scarlet and Gray.

Extremely excited to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University! #GoBucks #Zone6 ⭕pic.twitter.com/YVFnHQMK0j

— Elijah Higgins (@ehigggz) January 31, 2018

Higgins has had a spectacular final week of January, picking up six offers along the way. Texas, Notre Dame and Texas A&M were just some of the schools that sent him offers—with OSU being the ones to close out the month.

With one more year left before needing to make a college decision, 22 schools have had an interest in the 6-foot-3 Austin native. Listed by 247sports as a WR and a tight end, Higgins’ 247sports composite score is centered around his ability at WR. He comes in as the 64th best receiver in his class and 49th best recruit from the talent rich state of Texas. But if Higgins keeps getting offers in rapid succession like he has over the past week, then he may have the potential to rise up into four-star status.

Also, is anyone wishing Archie Miller had succeeded Thad Matta now?

“If it appears that both Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell are going to be ahead of him this fall, the safe bet is that Burrow then would elect to use his ability to transfer as a graduate and find somewhere he can start.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

It’s hard to fault Ward’s logic that Dwayne Haskins is the leading candidate to be Ohio State’s starting quarterback this fall, and it just makes sense that this assumption will lead fans to assume that Joe Burrow will transfer, and then to ask questions about what happens if Haskins goes pro after the 2018 campaign? Would Tate Martell start in 2019? Where would Matt Baldwin enter into the mix?

All totally normal, reasonable questions to ask about a program that routinely sends players to the NFL, and needs to always have a replacement waiting in the wings. But, let’s pump the breaks before we start christening Dwayne Haskins as the next great Buckeye quarterback; not because I don’t think he’s capable of that, because I think he has the ability to be that and more, but because Burrow is also a really good quarterback.

In last year’s spring game, it was clear that Burrow was the more prepared quarterback (both physically and mentally) between the two as they fought for the No. 2 spot behind J.T. Barrett. And, throughout fall camp, head coach Urban Meyer continually referenced the fact that the competition between Haskins and Burrow was close, but that the latter had a better command of the offense, given his additional year in the program.

However, we all know that Burrow was injured right before the season-opener, and Haskins ascended to be Barrett’s back-up throughout the season. Now, perhaps the additional year in the offense, and additional playing time— especially in the pressure-cooker of the Michigan game— vaulted Haskins over Burrow in terms of preparedness.

Even if that’s the case, Burrow will almost certainly still be with the Buckeyes throughout spring practice, as he will graduate in May with two years of eligibility remaining. So, of course, after his sterling performance this season, Haskins deserves to be the favorite heading into the spring, but this has been a horserace between the two from the jump, and we shouldn’t be surprised if there is more jockeying down the stretch.

“In a year or two, Indiana coming to Value City Arena to play Ohio State might feel special again, a true rivalry reignited.”

- Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Last night’s battle of first-year Big Ten head coaches was a bit of a “what might have been game” for both the Buckeyes and the Indiana Hoosiers. Former Ohio State assistant Archie Miller brought his IU squad in to face former Butler head coach Chris Holtmann’s OSU team.

When Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith fired Thad Matta in June last year, many fans were upset that (if he was going to do it) he didn’t do it earlier in an effort to attract Miller back to Columbus. However, by the time the coaching change was made, Miller had already signed on at Indiana, and Smith had focused in on Holtmann.

The rest, as they say, is history... or at least the preface to what could eventually be history for both schools. However, even at this early point in the two coaches’ B1G careers, I doubt many Buckeye fans would tell you that they wished that things had worked out differently.

As Rabinowitz notes in the article, Ohio State turned in an impressive, team victory last night, as the Hoosiers struggled for consistency. Remember that both schools finished 7-11 in conference play last year, with IU holding an 18-16 overall record to OSU’s 17-15. So, the fact that Ohio State is now 19-5, 10-1, while Indiana is 12-11, 5-6, is a startling turn around.

On Twitter during the game last night, I asked if fans were happy with the way that the coaching changes had shaken out. Unsurprisingly, the top two options resulted in 71 percent of the vote, with only 12 percent of respondents saying that they preferred Archie (that leaves 17 percent to answer “Are you dumb?” which is a fair question, and honestly how I responded to the poll).

Poll time. With the Buckeyes up 27-12 with 7:57 left, are you happy with how the IU and OSU coaching changes went?

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) January 31, 2018

However, with this history already between the schools and the coaches as the groundwork, should Miller and Holtmann be able to get these programs to the levels their fans would like, it could be the making of a new epic Big Ten basketball rivalry.

“Redshirt freshman Jake Hanes needed just four weeks of action to earn recognition from the conference office, named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Offensive Player of the Week.”

- Ohio State Athletics

While much of Buckeye Nation is focusing on football recruiting and the resurgent basketball team, there are a number of other exciting things happening in the world of OSU athletics.

First, there is redshirt freshman Jake Hanes earning national honors as a member of the Buckeye volleyball team after recording 6.42 points per set last week as OSU beat Saint Francis and then-No. 8 Penn State. In addition to the impressive points/set number, the opposite hitter also clocked a .452 hitting percentage and 5.83 kills per set.

Now, from a sport I know a little bit about to one that I know absolutely nothing about; last Saturday, Ohio State’s pistol team set a new program record with 6,491 points(?) in the open competition against Akron and Purdue. That number is apparently derived from a three-gun aggregate.

The new top score bested the previous mark, which was set nearly four years ago, by 24 points. The Air Pistol squad also broke a school record by carding 2,247 over the weekend. You can read more about those records here.

And, finally, if you are flipping through the various NBC channels next month, trying to find something to pique your interest during the Winter Olympics, might I suggest rooting for the Finnish women’s hockey team. Former Buckeye Minttu Tuominen will be making her third Olympic appearance for her native country when the games open up in PyeongChang, South Korea in February. MotS&G Ohio State Football: Best Player of 2018

Ohio State Football: Best Player of 2018
Jesse
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

With the 2017 season behind us and the 2018 season still months away, I have decided that today is a day for wild speculation. As I foresee that there may, in fact, be many of these days over the coming months, I will be asking and answering questions that are impossible to answer (unless your name is Urban) and will be fiercely defending my completely baseless findings. In pursuit of this goal, today’s question is a biggie: “Who will be the best player on the field for the Buckeyes next season?”

To answer this question, we must first establish what I mean by “best.” Am I asking what player will be the most talented on the field at any given time? Or is it more about who excels the most at their position relative to the rest of the country? Perhaps the question would best be answered by choosing the player that most positively affects the gameplay of the team, like an MVP award?

I don’t know. If I had known that I wouldn’t be able to get past the specifying stage of my question, perhaps I wouldn’t have even started writing this article (more wild speculation), but now I’ve begun, so I must finish. And since I am incapable of making decisions, I’m just going to answer all three questions.

Who is the Most Talented Player on the 2018 Ohio State Roster?

There are a lot of players to choose from when asking this question. Nick Bosa, Chase Young, Jeffrey Okudah and Baron Browning are all in the Top 10 of recruits in Ohio State History. The Buckeyes will have 9 247sports consensus 5-star prospects on their roster next year and will boast perhaps their greatest recruiting class of all time. Choosing the most talented player on this roster is like choosing the best of all of the bars of gold, or the tastiest of all of the Chipotle Mexican Grills, but I have to choose one and so I will choose the one that has proven it.

Winner: Nick Bosa

Austin Mack has made some crazy catches. Isaiah Prince has stepped up on the offensive line. Dwayne Haskins, Tate Martell, and JK Dobbins all have a shot at winning the Heisman next year, but I chose the fourth highest rated prospect in OSU history. Nick Bosa is the highest rated prospect on the team this year and the one that has most proven what a Top 10 prospect can do. He spent last year fighting through double- and triple-teams, freeing up the other monsters on the defensive line, and making huge plays in the backfield. With Chase Young showing flashes of brilliance in his limited time on-field in 2018, the Little Bear might just have even more opportunities to shine this coming season.

Who is going to win an individual award next year?

This category is not quite as easy to deliberate on. Many of OSU’s best players come at positions that are stacked on the national stage. JK Dobbins could win the Heisman, but he also might not be the best running back in the Big Ten with his counterpart at Wisconsin, Jonathan Taylor, putting up huge numbers on the ground. All of this is without even mentioning the reigning Doak Walker award-winner, Bryce Love.

Nick Bosa, Chase Young, and Dre’Mont Jones are all enormously talented on the defensive line. However, with players like Ed Oliver of Houston or Austin Bryant, Clelin Ferrell and Christian Wilkins, Clemson’s talented trio of All-Americans also back on the field, the odds of getting an individual award on the defensive line are not so great.

Winner: Austin Mack

His path to the Biletnikoff Award does seem a little bit… well, impossible, but watching the catches he made in 2017 and listening to the way his coaches talk about him, it really is impossible… to dislike him. Austin Mack will have to fight off upperclassmen trying to stay on the field, stand out in Urban Meyer’s run-first offense and catch passes from a brand new starting quarterback, but he has the talent and the upward mobility to be a first-round pick. Hopefully, though, he will have a more pass-heavy offense to work with, as Dwayne Haskins looks to be the front-runner for the starting job and Ryan Day has been elevated to offensive coordinator.

Fingers crossed.

Who will be the 2018 Ohio State MVP?

I only have one answer to this question, and it’s at the same position as it would be on any other team: QB. JK Dobbins will probably have a great year next year. The offensive line should be good. The defensive line will be unstoppable and Alex Grinch and Greg Schiano are going to figure out the rest of the defense. With all of that being said, the Most Valuable Player on this team next year is going to have to be the master and commander.

Winner: Dwayne Haskins

I understand that we don’t know who the starting quarterback is going to be next year, but I do know that Dwayne Haskins looked the closest to being ready. I also know that, in Urban’s Power Spread offensive philosophy, the offense runs through the quarterback. The Buckeyes success (or failure) next year is going to hinge on the quarterback’s ability to do what the coaches need him to do and how well he can develop as the season progresses. If Dwayne trots out there against Oregon State on September 1st, he has to be the MVP.

Despite most of the 2018 class signing their LOIs during the Early Signing Period, OSU could get a few more on the traditional signing day.

This year marked the first time that the NCAA has given college football prospects an opportunity to sign their National Letters of Intent during an early signing period. From Dec. 20-22, Ohio State (and the other 129 FBS programs) were expecting to add up to 80% of their incoming 2018 class, with the remaining few scholarship spots to be claimed on the traditional National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Having already received 22 signed LOIs during the Early Signing Period, this year’s traditional February National Signing Day isn’t expected to be quite as exciting. However, Ohio State is looking to add a couple more high-value scholarship players to the 2018 class. That being said, the team is quickly running out of room, sitting at the scholarship maximum even before NSD. However, that could change if it is made public that other players are planning to transfer, or are ending their collegiate careers due to injury.

The Buckeyes already expect to get some paperwork from DT Tyler Friday and WR Chris Olave, who recently verbally committed to Ohio State. Other possible additions to the 2018 class include OLB Christopher Oats, OT Nicholas Petit-Frere, RB Taivon Thomas and OT Rasheed Walker.

Stay tuned for updates as the Buckeyes get BOOOOOM-ing during National Signing Day, and add to an already impressive haul of top talents from the 2018 recruiting class as they battle Georgia for the top class of the year.

Two North Carolina prospects got Buckeye offers on Tuesday

The finishing touches are being put on the Ohio State Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting class. National Signing Day is a week away, and there’s a chance Urban Meyer and co. will snag a recruit or two by the time all the Letter of Intents are signed.

But, what about the classes after 2018?

Like any elite program, they’re focusing not only on the current year, but the years down the road. The Buckeyes have dished out offers left and right over the past week to prospects in the 2019 and 2020 classes. That trend carried over into Tuesday, as OSU made more offers to recruits in the ‘19 and ‘20 classes.

2020 in Zone 6

One offer that went out was to 2020 wide receiver Porter Rooks. Rooks, who hails from Charlotte, N.C., doesn’t have a lot recruiting grades yet, but that didn’t stop the Buckeyes.

Rooks made the offer known on Tuesday evening via Twitter.

Blessed to receive an offer from the Ohio State University. #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/iXfEDj7fmp

— Porter Rooks (@p9rooks) January 30, 2018

It’s been an eventful end to January for the WR; a a trio of schools (Penn State, Tennessee and Ohio State) made him offers, and on Rooks’ end, he made an unofficial visit with South Carolina on Jan. 20, according to his profile page on 247sports.

Schools have taken notice of the 6-foot-1 prospect, as 24 of them have made an offer. That trio of programs joined the likes of Alabama, Auburn and Florida State in the pursuit of the wide receiver. Expect more programs to send their offers, as there is still plenty of time left in his recruitment process.

As mentioned before, there aren’t too many recruiting grades out there for Rooks. 247sports, though, did give the WR a grade—and it’s a good one. Currently, the website has him as the 10th best prospect in the class, third best WR, and the second best in North Carolina.

The next great D-lineman?

Prior to Rooks making his offer known, a fellow North Carolina native received an OSU offer, too. Three-star 2019 defensive tackle Joshua Harris (Roxboro, NC / Person) made his Buckeye offer known on Twitter.

Blessed to receive and offer from the Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/qqn7Hxgn5x

— Joshua Harris (@H_Josh99) January 30, 2018

In addition to his three-star ranking, Harris is considered by the 247sports composite as the 25th best DT and 15th best prospect out of North Carolina. So far, 12 schools have made him offers. Those schools include Big Ten programs Maryland, Wisconsin and Penn State; additionally, the Georgia Bulldogs, who were defeated by Alabama in the National Championship Game, also made an offer to the 6-foot-5 DT.

Often, picture collages on Twitter are they way recruits let everyone know about an offer. In Rooks’ tweet, he has the Ohio State logo and a touchdown celebration as the pictures. Harris took a different approach, putting up a highlight reel consisting of Dre’Mont Jones, Chase Young and Tracy Sprinkle.

Could it be that he follows the program more closely than others? After tweeting out the highlight reel, he posted a graphic of him in an OSU uniform.
