Meyer_Presser.0.jpeg

With less than two weeks until the annual spring game, Meyer says that there’s still room for improvement.

As the calendar flips to April, the Ohio State Buckeye football program now officially has less than two weeks left on their 2018 spring practice schedule. Halfway through the month of workouts, head coach Urban Meyer met with the media on Monday morning to discuss the progress that he’s seen in his team.

The Buckeyes will conclude their spring sessions on Saturday, April 14 in the annual spring game. The intra-squad scrimmage will kickoff at approximately 1:45 p.m. ET, following a “Showdown at the Shoe” lacrosse matchup between Ohio State and Michigan.

Quarterback Position Battle

  • Meyer said that it is day-to-day as to which quarterback is playing the best. He said that he’s seen individual growth in all of the players, but no one has yet to separate himself.
  • The head coach would prefer for one QB to just go out and take the job, but without that, he likes the competition. “You wish one would take it, but that just hasn’t happened yet.”
  • He added that Tate Martell has a skill set similar to former QB J.T. Barrett. Meyer said multiple times that Martell has an incredible skill set.
  • Meyer said that early during the spring practice, the void of missing Barrett was obvious, but that it is closing quickly.
  • He said that he wasn’t sure if they would have a clear leader at the position coming out of spring practice.
Depth Chart

  • Meyer said that the receivers still have a long way to go, but that they have been getting better as things have progressed.
  • The head coach praises the development of Thayer Munford. With the chance to become a starter as a redshirt-freshman, Meyer said that he has been very impressed with Munford’s work ethic.
  • He went into a bit of detail about the lineman’s recruiting, including that athletic director Gene Smith was involved in signing off on bringing him in, given some issues in his past.
  • Meyer said that the defense is far ahead of the offense at this point in practice.
  • After losing players to the NFL for years, Meyer said that, “if you dont have leaders it’s your job to develop them.”
  • On defensive end Davon Hamilton, Meyer said, “you see a heartbeat there.” He added that Hamilton’s had a very good spring.
  • Meyer said that tight end Luke Farrell has been grading out as a champion. Last week was “as good a week as he’s had,” according to Meyer.
Injury Updates

  • Meyer said that the coaching staff was trying to protect returning starters Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones on the defense; as well as Parris Campbell and other offensive veterans.
Miscellaneous

  • Meyer said that they are especially careful when recruiting players from difficult backgrounds. He said that the program is very healthy right now, and the worst thing that you can do is to bring in somebody who would cause problems with that environment.

Chris Holtmann and crew will play host to a former Seminole guard.

With their first season as the leaders for the Buckeyes now in the rearview mirror, Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball coaching staff have been hard at work contacting numerous transfer prospects on the market.

Per a report by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Holtmann and crew will soon have the chance to show one of the top guard transfers in college basketball what it would be like to be a Buckeye student-athlete.

According to Rothstein, the Buckeyes will host now former-Florida State point guard C.J. Walker on campus this weekend.

Florida State transfer C.J. Walker will visit Ohio State this weekend, per a source. Sit one, play two.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 2, 2018

Coming off of his sophomore campaign, in which he averaged eight points and two assists per contest as a starter for the Seminoles, Walker will have to sit out this upcoming college basketball season before returning to the court as a redshirt-junior in 2019-2020.

Originally from Indianapolis, Ind., Holtmann is more than familiar with what Walker can do in action. A four-star prospect in the class of 2016, he earned offers from Butler— where Holtmann was then the coach—, Illinois, Purdue, Penn State, Cincinnati, and others before choosing to attend Florida State University.

Hearing from a long list of schools, Ohio State isn’t the only Big Ten program to reportedly show interest in the 6’1, 195-pound lead guard. Indiana, and others have also been reportedly hoping to bring the guard back to the midwest.

If Walker does decide to bring his talents to Columbus, he could replace another transfer guard named C.J., as current Ohio State lead man C.J. Jackson will graduate from the program next year.

OSU vs Texas for 2019 WR

Just like nearly every year on the recruiting trail, Ohio State finds themselves mixing it up against the Texas Longhorns for one of the top recruits in the entire country.

Announcing his plans to verbal commit after visiting OSU, and UT, four-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, a former Columbus area native, who now resides in Austin, will either suit up in the Scarlet and Gray or the White and Burnt Orange on the college level.

I will be taking my official visits to;
Ohio State University April 13-15
University of Texas April 20-22
I’ll announce my commitment shortly after.

— Garrett Wilson (@GarrettWilson_V) April 1, 2018

Once looked as a near lock to join his former Lake Travis High teammate and current Ohio State freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin, some believe Wilson, who made the trek to Columbus recently, will now stay put in the southwest.

Still left with a chance to impress Wilson on his official trip to campus, the dynamic duo of Baldwin and the 6-foot, 185-pound soon-to-be senior could connect once again if all things workout later this month.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Wilson, who hauled in almost 100 receptions for over 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns through the air as a junior, is currently considered the sixth wide out, and 46th overall prospect in the class of 2019.

Will Garrett Wilson end up back in Ohio or will he stay put in the Austin area? We won’t have to wait much longer to find out. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Quick Hits

  • 2019 four-star wide receiver Ramel Keyton of Marietta High in Georgia named his top six on Friday. Making the cut from over 25 offers, Ohio State, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, Auburn, and Ole Miss are still in the mix for the 6-foot-3, 185-pound standout.
  • Also taking to his Twitter page to share with the world his current list of college leaders was fellow class of 2019 prospect Khris Bogle. The four-star defensive end from Florida has trimmed things down from 41 offers to 14 with Ohio State, USC, Clemson, Oklahoma, Penn State, Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, LSU, and Tennessee sticking out.

Nebraska Series from Nick Swisher Field @ Bill Davis Stadium Columbus, OH

Bucks win the rubber match of the series 15-14! Had a 15-6 lead and then held on for dear life!

OHIO STATE TAKES SERIES OVER HUSKERS WITH 15-14 WIN

Buckeyes spray 22 hits Sunday afternoon to improve to 19-8 overall and 2-1 in B1G play

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State baseball team outlasted a late comeback by Nebraska in a slugfest series finale, 15-14, Sunday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 15-6 lead, scoring 11 unanswered runs before the Huskers plated 11 runs in the final three innings to pull within one. Right-handed reliever Seth Kinker was able to close the door on Nebraska to pick up his sixth save of the year, striking out Joe Acker with the go-ahead run on base.

With the series win to open conference play, the Buckeyes improve to 19-8 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten action, while the Huskers fall to 14-14 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Buckeyes sprayed 22 hits against the NU pitching staff, marking the most hits at home by a Buckeye squad (since 2004).

QUOTE FROM COACH
"The next two weekends are going to be on the road," head coach Greg Beals said. "You need to win your home series. Hitting is contagious. Everything that happens in baseball is contagious. The game seems to have a flow to it. The flow was all ours and all offense early in the game and then they caught it at the end too. I told the guys after the game this is a black-and-blue type conference. We know everyone in this conference is going to compete. We knew Nebraska was going to be tough this weekend. I have a lot of respect for the coaches in this conference. We have to be ready to go next week in Iowa."

A HIT PARADE AT BILL DAVIS
A combined 41 hits lit up the scoreboard on Easter Sunday. Every Buckeye in the lineup recorded at least one hit, including six Buckeyes with multi-hit contests. Dominic Canzone was 4-for-6 with three runs scored, double, four RBI and two stolen bases. Conner Pohl was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI and Tyler Cowles went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, double and one RBI. Noah McGowan was 2-fo-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, double, home run and walk. Kobie Foppehad three hits with a RBI, run scored and walk.

HUSKERS SCORE FIRST
Scott Schreiber doubled to the gap in left center to score the first run of the ball game in the top of the first. In the second, Shreiber stole third base and scored on a throwing error in the third before a solo homer by Luke Roskam.

ELEVEN UNANSWERED RUNS FOR THE BOYS
The Buckeye bats came alive in the third inning, plating 11 unanswered runs in a Buckeye offensive onslaught. Brady Cherry hit a sac fly to score Canzone for the first run. In the fourth, Jacob Barnwell singled to left to score Pohl. Canzone went the other way for a two-run double down the left field line. Kobie Foppe knocked a base hit through the left side for a RBI single. In the fifth, Cowles doubled to score McGowan and Canzone scored two more runs on a single through the right side. Pohl kept the offensive way going with a two-run single in the sixth and Barnwell's sac fly made it 11-3. After the Huskers scored three in the top of the seventh, a three-run homer by McGowan and RBI single by Romans put the lead to nine.

HUSKERS RALLY LATE
Nebraska wouldn't go away quietly. In the eighth, a two-run single by Zac Luckey, RBI single by Jaxon Hallmark, two-run single by Mike Addante and RBI infield knock by Mojo Hagge made it a three-run game. Kinker had a huge strikeout to leave two on base in the eighth when he fanned Schreiber.

In the ninth, Huskers got within one run after a RBI single by Zac Repinski and RBI single by Addante. However, Kinker ended the game with his second strikeout.

ON THE MOUND
Right-handed starting pitcher Adam Niemeyer improved to 2-2, throwing five innings on seven hits, three runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Right-handed reliever Thomas Waning allowed three runs, two earned on four hits with one strikeout in 1.1 inning. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik walked two and struck out one in 0.1 inning. Left-handed reliever Griffan Smith allowed three runs, two earned, on one hit with one walk. Right-handed reliever Curtiss Irving tossed 0.1 inning on three runs, two earned, three hits, one walk and one strikeout. Kinker allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

UP NEXT
Ohio State faces in-state foe Kent State at 6:35 p.m. ET April 4 at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The game will be broadcasted live on BTN and can be heard on AM 1460 ESPN.

GAME NOTES
  • Ohio State improves to 11-13 all-time vs. the Huskers. The Buckeyes have won three straight weekend series.
  • The Buckeyes are 8-2 at home. The team is hitting .341 and slugging .487 at Bill Davis Stadium.
  • Ohio State recorded five two-out RBI and have an impressive 78 two-out RBI through 27 games in 2018.
  • Today marked the second time this season Ohio State recorded at least 20 hits in a game. It was the most hits by a Buckeye squad at home (since 2004).
  • The 22 hits was the most allowed by the Nebraska pitching staff this year. Ohio State has had at least 10 hits in 15 games this season.
  • The Buckeyes are leading the Big Ten in batting average (.309), on-base percentage (.399), run scored (212), hits (297) and RBI (196).
  • Canzone went over the 100-hit mark in his career today with four hits. He has 102 hits in 76 career games. He leads the conference with 45 hits.
  • Pohl hit .571 (8-for-14) with three RBI and four runs scored in series vs. the Huskers.
  • McGowan is leading the Buckeyes in average (.411), doubles (12), home runs (6), RBI (37) and slugging (.710).
  • Hit streaks extended: Pohl (7), McGowan (5), Barnwell (4) and Canzone (4)
  • Reached base streaks extended: Canzone (12), Foppe (11), Pohl (7), Barnwell (6), Cowles (5), McGowan (5) and Romans (3).
  • Kinker tied former Buckeye Eric Best (2007-10) with 91 career appearances, which is fifth all-time. He now has 15 career saves, which ties former Buckeye Rory Meister (2005-08) for fifth all-time.
RANDOM NOTES FROM AROUND THE BALLPARK
  • The Easter Bunny was the first to arrive at the park this morning. Surprising gameday staffers and media members on the stats table in the press box, a bright-orange bowl was filled to the brim with a variety of everyone's favorite candy. Sunday treats are the best. Happy Easter to everyone out there.
  • Another legend returned to Bill Davis today too. Bob Spears, the Buckeyes' radio analysis on AM 1460 ESPN and former Buckeye pitcher. He once held the scoreless innings streak record. But to his surprise, he didn't have a credential waiting for him at the pass gate and had some trouble getting into the stadium. The OSU SID big leagued him. April Fools, Bobby.
  • The baseball social media person had some fun with April Fools too, making a fake lineup for the game today. It was pretty stacked as familiar names on the coaching and support staff were used instead of the boys. But equipment manager John Dunn was not pleased that he didn't make the cut for the starting nine. For the record, he was the fake designated hitter today.

He had to factor in the millions of alumni and fans who weren't "familiar with the situation" as well as Tressel himself. Cut the cord without some absorption time and you've got much more of a ticked off fan base, a legend who seems not to have gotten "due process", much more potential for a Joesus-lite martyrdom/cult situation, and maybe even a Tressel who chooses not to go quietly. Besides what I'm sure was use of the time behind the scenes working out the details of separation by "resignation" with Tressel and letting him work through the stages of grief and exit with some dignity, the "firestorm" (which IMO was basically a fart in the wind in the grand scheme of things), gave the cover of necessity to do the inevitable, possibly helped other coaches know that Ohio State isn't a "graveyard of coaches" that just casually tosses its legends aside, and let the media and outsiders (and to a degree Tressel himself), rather than the administration/institution, look like the bad guys.

All very true.- Though I'd probably say the reaction of the fans would have been more uniformly pro-Tressel. The alumni that I spoke to probably broke about 80-20 in favor of "why hasn't he been fired already." There was also the memory of the O'Brien situation where Geiger did pull the quick trigger, and it ended up costing a couple of million dollars in a settlement. My understanding was that behind the scenes, the ncaa had been notified of the violations and as soon as they formally sanctioned the program, JT was out. Yahoo just threw the whole thing into chaos when they let the cat out of the bag. The whole suspending JT was another colossal mistake. The proper public line should have been "his future will be determined based on the ncaa's findings." Though that, of course, throws recruiting into chaos. And much of that shitshow of a press conference can be laid directly at Gee's feet rather than Smith. Anyways, it's all water under the bridge at this point.
