The Buckeyes and the Bison will meet later this year for the first time since 1986.

Ohio State will host Bucknell as part of its 2018-19 non-conference schedule, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 12, 2018

Ohio State’s 2018-19 non-conference schedule continues to take shape, as it was announced Thursday that the Buckeyes will be taking on Bucknell from the Patriot League. The Bison join Cincinnati, UCLA, and Youngstown State as opponents in Ohio State’s non-conference portion of their 2018-19 season. The matchup against Cincinnati in “The Queen City” will kick off Ohio State’s season this fall, while the contest against UCLA will be a part of the CBS Sports Classic in Chicago in December.

Bucknell finished the 2017-18 season 25-10, winning both the Patriot League regular season title and the conference tournament. Bucknell gave Michigan State all they could handle in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, with the Spartans squeaking out a 82-78 win. The Bison finished the year ranked 97th in KenPom rankings, but Bucknell will lose their three leading scorers.

The upcoming contest will mark just the second time Ohio State and Bucknell have squared off. The last meeting between the teams came in 1986, which Ohio State easily won 90-62. Ohio State last faced a Patriot League squad in the 2016-17, when the Buckeyes opened the season with a 78-68 win over Navy.

“A lot of things I won’t share with everyone else, what’s going on in-house, but I’ve been in worse situations where you don’t have one. So we’ve got to do right by the team and do right by the players.”

-Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer via Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group

There has only been one other instance during his time with Ohio State that Urban Meyer has had a decision to make at quarterback, and if this year is anything like 2015, don’t expect an answer on who will be starting for the Buckeyes anytime soon. In Saturday’s Spring Game, Meyer will get a chance to take one last look at Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, and Tate Martell before spring practice wraps up.

Meyer also had to choose between three quarterbacks back in 2015, a decision that was made a little easier when Braxton Miller announced he was moving to receiver. Unlike 2015, Meyer won’t have to decided between J.T. Barrett, who put Ohio State in position to make the College Football Playoff, and Cardale Jones, who took over for an injured Barrett and helped the Buckeyes secure the title.

The biggest question coming out of the Spring Game is what Ohio State is going to do with Joe Burrow. While Burrow is in the mix for the starting job, if it is evident he won’t be Ohio State’s next starting quarterback, Meyer has to decide whether to let Burrow know, so the quarterback can explore a possible graduate transfer.

Even with the urgency Burrow might feel to find out what his future might hold, Meyer is likely to keep things close to the vest. Dwayne Haskins is the favorite for the job, but it would help the Buckeyes to keep Burrow on the roster as insurance in case Haskins doesn’t perform as expected. Just be ready for a summer full of speculation about the quarterback position, as Saturday likely won’t provide a clear answer on how Ohio State is leaning.

“We focus on the now, we don’t focus on the future. As a mom, I would love to see Nick win a national championship because his brother got one. I want for him so bad. It was such an amazing experience for Joey. For Nick to have that, it would be my dream come true.”

-Cheryl Bosa, mother of Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa via Brad Crawford, Bucknuts

While it won’t be a big surprise if Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa declares for the NFL Draft after the 2018 season, his mother says it is too early to start talking about the draft, as there are still things her son has to accomplish in Columbus. The biggest prize still left for the talented pass rusher to win is a national title. Nick’s older brother Joey was a part of Ohio State’s 2014 title team, and their mother is hoping Nick can win his own CFP Championship.

Nick Bosa has already shown plenty of physical talent on the field to boost his draft stock, but what has been impressing defensive line coach Larry Johnson is Bosa’s leadership skills. Bosa has been leading by example, which has helped young talents like Chase Young and Jonathan Cooper steer clear of developing bad habits. Bosa is also setting the bar high for those around them, making his teammates step up their game.

Bosa will have even more time to shine this year, with a number of Buckeye defensive linemen from last year’s team having moved on to the pros. Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, and Jalyn Holmes are all waiting to hear their name called later this month at the NFL Draft. It won’t be a big surprise if next year at this time Bosa is readying himself to hear his name called much like his trio of former teammates are this year.

There is only one Buckeye competing for the 2018 Stanley Cup, and he’ll take the ice for Game 1 on Thursday.

Coming off statistically the worst season of his career, Ohio State Hockey alum Ryan Kesler is looking to turn it up at the right time for his Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks take on the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the 2018 NHL playoffs, with their first matchup set for Thursday, Apr. 12 at 10:30 p.m. ET (USA | Stream) in Anaheim.

Kesler, a 6’2 center, is coming off an off-season hip surgery that has sidelined and hampered him for part of the year. This comes after last season, when he reached his second All-Star game and was a finalist for the Selke Trophy as the best defensive-forward in the NHL. He clearly has the skills to succeed and lead his Ducks far in the playoffs, and just has to rediscover his game after the rocky regular season.

Kesler starred for Ohio State in 2002-2003 where he amassed 31 points for the season and was subsequently drafted No. 23 in the first round of the NHL draft by the Vancouver Canucks — the only current NHL Buckeye to be drafted in Round 1. Since his time as a Buckeye, Kesler has won a silver Olympic medal, been to 2 NHL All-Star games, won the U20 World Junior Cup Gold Medal, and in 2011 won the Selke Trophy.

The Livonia, MI native was a very consistent producer for Vancouver and for the past 4 seasons in Anaheim. On top of his production, he has been an assistant captain for both teams. At age 33 it’s unclear how much longer he has in the league, but one thing is for certain, he will go down as one of the best Buckeyes to play in the NHL.

How Do You Rank Your Ohio State Rooting Interests

When I was young I was more into pro sports but that's changed in the 21st century. I can barely watch the NBA and the NFL is more interesting for fantasy sports purposes. Still love MLB, but hate my team.

OSU related? EVERYTHING! I drank the Kool Aid my years in C-bus, but if I had to rank them:

football
basketball
hockey
lacrosse

Those would all be men's sports. I'd be lying if I said I found the women's versions as interesting, despite the obvious talent of our female athletes. If I had BTN I'm sure I'd follow baseball as well.

The Buckeyes’ Kelsey Mitchell is a first-round lock, but Stephanie Mavunga might slide in there too.

The 2018 WNBA Draft will get underway on Thursday, April 12, with the first round starting at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2), followed by the second and third rounds at 8 p.m. ET (ESPNU). In their inaugural season, the Las Vegas Aces won the draft lottery for the first overall pick, followed by the Indiana Fever (No. 2) and the Chicago Sky (Nos. 3 and 4).

Ohio State finished a few rounds shy of their quest for a “home-court” Final Four trip, but the team did finish the 2017-18 as the Big Ten Tournament Champions and with a long list of records and honors among the group of talented women. Now, with the NCAA Tournament in the rearview, a couple of Buckeyes are finally making their way to play in the pros.

Expected to be one of the first players taken, although not expected to be the overall No. 1 pick, Kelsey Mitchell is among the elite prospects in this year’s draft class.

Mitchell could have made the move to the WNBA last season, but decided to return to play for the Buckeyes for her senior campaign. She didn’t reach her ultimate goal of an NCAA Championship, but did set an astounding 29 school, Big Ten, and national records (men’s and women’s) with her extra season in Columbus. (The full list of records she holds is absolutely incredible, and is definitely worth a glance.)

Mitchell isn’t the only Buckeye to get some first-round consideration with teammate Stephanie Mavunga drawing interest from team’s as well. The 6-foot-3 forward was a First Team All-Big Ten player for her performance during the 2017-18 season, which included averaging a double-double for the second straight year, with 16.6 points and 11.0 rebounds. She also was named a semifinalist for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year award.

Another Ohio State player who could hear her name called on Thursday (granted not likely during the first round) is 5-foot-7 guard Asia Doss. The Buckeye set several new career-bests during her senior season in Columbus, including 5-of-10 3-pointers made against Louisville, eight assists in the game against FGCU, and seven steals against Nebraska. Doss was a starter in all but five of the games played last season, and notched the third-most minutes played on the team.

While Mitchell being a first-round pick is a virtual lock, Mavunga sneaking into Round 1 would be a cool moment for the Buckeye and Ohio State women’s basketball as a whole. All three of the Buckeye prospects have the talent to go on and succeed at the next level, so everyone at LGHL wishes them luck.

Let’s preview the Spring Game, shall we?

As of right now, Ohio State’s Spring Game is still on for Saturday. Incoming weather might change that, but in the event that it doesn’t, there are some intriguing storylines that are going to play out as the Buckeyes take to Ohio Stadium for the first time in 2018.

The main one (obviously): Quarterback.

Urban Meyer recently said that none of Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, or Tate Martell has yet to separate from the pack, adding a different layer of intrigue to a position that had more or less been on lock the last two seasons with J.T. Barrett. Is he telling the truth, though?

On this episode of the Hangout in the Holyland, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn break down why they think Meyer’s playing coy about his QB situation, and what it means for the Spring Game. They also preview the game itself, and everything you need to be on the lookout for, including:

  • Who steps up at the available positions on the offensive line, and how the differences between Barrett and Haskins will affect them.
  • Picking who this year’s Michael Thomas (aka Spring Game Player of the Year) will be.
  • Uncertainty at tight end, and waiting for Jeremy Ruckert to get on campus.
  • What Tuf Borland’s injury means for the middle linebackers, and why this might be Justin Hilliard ’s last chance to make an impact.
  • Roles for Demario McCall, Keandre Jones, Shaun Wade, and more!

The guys also discuss why C.J. Walker’s commitment to the basketball team is a big deal, and the hilarious Herm Edwards saga at Arizona State.

The Buckeyes added another 3 home runs to their season total, which stands at an impressive 45 homers.

The softball Buckeyes pulled off a sweep over Penn State on Wednesday, finishing the doubleheader with a 9-1 six-inning win, and a 7-4 victory to cap off the night. The two wins put the team at 26-8 overall (7-4 in Big Ten games) which should help Ohio State move up a bit in the national rankings, where they’ve hovered in the high-teens/low-20s, and currently sit at No. 22 in both the ESPN and USA Today/NFCA Coaches polls.

Big hits and home runs have highlighted an already-impressive season for the Buckeye softball team, and they continued that trend against the Nittany Lions, notching three additional home runs during the doubleheader and nine hits for extra bases. Taylor White was a show stopper during the pair of games, hitting .714 (with 5 hits), three runs scored, a triple, a double, a pair of RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.143. (I mean, damn!)

It wasn’t just White making contact at the plate, Emily Clark claimed her seventh home run of the season, and her 100th career RBI in the process. Similarly, Ashley Goodwin’s two-run homer was her sixth of the season and pushed her to the 100 career-hit mark.

Not all of the game’s big hits made it over the fence though, with Bailee Sturgeon notching a hit in her ninth game in a row, and Bri Betschel claiming a pair of triples in the doubleheader. The Buckeyes definitely have a couple heavy bats on the roster, but one of the cool things about this year’s squad is how many various players have had their own big-hit moment this season — and it’s not over yet.

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) April 12, 2018

Leading the Buckeyes in home runs on the season is Lilli Piper, who is dominating with 16 dingers so far. She only saw three at-bats against the Nittany Lions, so while she didn’t add to her overall total, she sits just two HRs shy of tying Garner-Webb’s Katie Prebble for the most home runs this season — a stat she should be able to top by season’s end. Piper finished last season with 18 homers, and is on her way to joining the 50-career HR Club by the time she finishes her career at Ohio State.

After losing 0-3 to Indiana in their Big Ten opening series, the Buckeyes have won their last six and sit at No. 3 in the conference, just behind Michigan (8-1 B1G, 33-7-0) and Indiana (7-2 B1G, 15-24-0). The Hoosiers may be doing well in conference play, but that overall season record is far from impressive, so a regression to the mean is likely.

The Ohio State softball team is completely immersed in Big Ten play at this point in the season, and will next face Northwestern on the road for a weekend series, April 13-15.

The Buckeyes are in the middle of a recruiting battle with Notre Dame and Clemson for the OL.

With the spring game still on for Saturday afternoon, the Ohio State Buckeyes are still at work getting ready for their scrimmage in front of the Buckeye faithful. Over 75,000 tickets have been sold for the spring game, which is very good. Ohio Stadium is undergoing some construction right now, meaning that some seats are unavailable for purchase.

But, Saturday is still a couple days away; right now, though, the recruiting trail is still heating up for Urban Meyer and his program.

In the middle of things

Three-star offensive lineman Andrew Kristofic (Gibsonia, PA / Pine-Richland) made his way to Columbus to visit with Meyer. Things must’ve gone well, as Kristofic—a member of the 2019 class—tweeted a picture from his visit Wednesday night.

⭕️utstanding day pic.twitter.com/sLDu5VllfD

— Andrew Kristofic (@AKristofic21) April 12, 2018

Last week, Kristofic made a visit to Clemson, and a week before that he was visiting at Notre Dame. Both of those schools, as well as the Wisconsin Badgers are high on the 6-foot-6 guard’s list. However, according to Ryan Donnelly of Landof10, Kristofic’s visit to OSU was pulled together within the last two days.

Surprise Ohio State visit for Pennsylvania tackle Andrew Kristofic. This one wasn’t in the works until even 48 hours ago. Buckeyes still battling with Notre Dame, Clemson, and Wisconsin https://t.co/IX3Qx29nNk

— Ryan Donnelly (@L10Ryan) April 12, 2018

With a trio of visits in as many weeks, Kristofic has been traveling all around the country. Those three schools (Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dame) have to be feeling really good right now, as the OL mentioned to Donnelly that they are amongst the schools he’s feeling best about. Throw in the Badgers, and it looks to be a four program race right now for the Pennsylvania native. However, the 247sports crystal ball tells a different story. Nine votes have been casted for Kristofic, and all nine of them point to a commitment to the Fighting Irish.

The Gibsonia product holds over 25 offers; additionally, he is the 50th best OL and 10th best player in PA for the ‘19 class. Even though he’s graded as a three-star, he can clear paths for his offense. Take a look at his Hudl highlight reel below.

The all-seeing Crystal Ball

Kristofic may be a heavy Notre Dame lean in terms of the predictions, but in the race for another member of the 2019 class, the 247sports Crystal Ball gave some good news to the Scarlet and Gray.

Two recruiting analysts—with Donnelly being one of them—made predictions that four-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson (Austin, TX / Lake Travis) is trending toward the Buckeyes. This is more good news for OSU in the pursuit of Wilson, as the four most recent votes in Wilson’s crystal ball have pointed to the Bucks being the likely landing spot.

The University of Texas, which is located in Austin, is seen as the other main contender for Wilson. With over 30 offers made to the WR, the Buckeyes have a great opportunity to showcase the program to the Lake Travis standout, as he’ll be making an official visit this Saturday for the spring game. Next weekend, according to his profile page on 247sports, Wilson will be swinging by the Texas Longhorn’s program—also slated as an official visit.

Surely within the next two weeks, we’ll have a lot clearer picture on where Wilson may be thinking about committing to. Right now, he’s one of the best WRs and Texas products in his class.

Quick Hits

  • Four-star defensive end Ani Izuchukwu had a top three of OSU, Alabama and Mississippi State. On Wednesday, he committed to the Bulldogs, spurning the Buckeyes and Crimson Tide. Izuchukwu is a Nashville native, and is graded as the 14th best weak-side DE in the 2019 class.

Also, Urban’s not going to tell you who’s leading the quarterback battle until he absolutely has to.

“In reality, Meyer is not worth $7.6 million per year, which will make him the third-highest paid coach nationally behind Alabama’s Nick Saban and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney. He is worth more.”

-David Briggs, The Toledo Blade

In terms of the market value, Urban Meyer— as well as Saban and Swinney— are worth whatever a school is willing to pay him; and far be it for me to stand between another person and a paycheck. However, the other side of the equation is whether or not a school— Ohio State in this case— should be willing to pay their football coach that much money?

In his article, Briggs does a good job of breaking down all of the value that the OSU football program— and by extension, Meyer— brings to the university at large; including the athletic department surplus, enrollment spikes, enhanced marketing abilities, and much more; and all of that is true and valid, and I 100 percent support it.

After all, Ohio State is in the rare situation where they have the ability to justify paying a coach this much. All they have to do is point to the $40 million that athletics gave back to the university last year. So, both from a free market and a university finances position, there isn’t a problem with paying a coach whatever they want.

It’s also hard to argue that anyone in college football— save Saban— has done more with his programs on the field to deserve it.

However, whenever we start talking about the ever escalating landscape of coaches’ salaries, my brain always circles back to the fact that these adults are making millions of dollars on the backs of much younger men, who are incredibly limited in their ability to do exactly what their coaches are doing; financially capitalizing on their talents and notoriety.

Now, I’m not going to get into an argument about whether or not colleges and universities should straight-up pay their players, because, personally, I believe that such a move would result in catastrophically fewer programs across the board, thus limiting the opportunities of thousands of people nationwide from receiving a college education.

That being typed, if Meyer can find a school willing to pay him $7.6 million, why can’t Dwayne Haskins find a local McDonald’s franchise willing to pay him $10,000? Or better yet, why can’t St. Thomas Aquinas High School pay Nick Bosa to come back and work a camp during the offseason? Furthermore, why can’t the anchor on the women’s 4x400 relay team give swimming lessons? (I’m simplifying NCAA rules, I know, but you get the picture)

If you want to put limits on these types of things to prevent anything too untoward from happening, ok, but if people are going to get up in arms about how many millions a university should or shouldn’t pay a coach, maybe let’s table that until we figure out why players aren’t allowed to be paid at all by anyone, anywhere, despite being the ones generating the income in the first place.

“Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer spoke publicly Wednesday afternoon for the first time in nine days, and he said the competition among Dwayne Haskins Jr., Joe Burrow and Tate Martell remains too close to call.”

-Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

I’m going to go ahead and break it to you all, it wouldn’t matter if Joe Burrow was lightyears ahead of Dwayne Haskins, or if Tate Martell was just not physically capable of performing at the Big Ten level (neither of which I am suggesting, mind you), but Urban Meyer isn’t going to tell us anyway.

Meyer has no intention of divulging any information to the public (and opponents) that he doesn’t have to. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if part of him wouldn’t mind seeing Saturday’s spring game cancelled, just to avoid all of the coaches on this fall’s schedule having another bit of film on whomever ends up under center for the Buckeyes.

The last time that Meyer had a quarterback competition to contend with, it was a much different situation. J.T. Barrett was the starter that led OSU to a remarkable season before getting hurt against Michigan, paving the way for Cardale Jones to finish the run to the National Championship.

The following fall, Meyer had two proven options to go with, and he still kept it close to the proverbial vest as long as possible. Now, he has two backups who have played well, but only in limited, mop-up duty, and a redshirt freshman who is likely undersized for the job, but that Meyer can’t stop raving about.

So, with no clear favorite from the outside looking in, I would be shocked if Meyer tips his hand before mid-August (if not later), just to keep opponents guessing as long as possible.

“Holtmann’s first foray into the grad transfer market at Ohio State went exceedingly well, especially given the timing of things. He’ll have to match that again for the Buckeyes to avoid taking an expected significant step back from the second-place Big Ten finish and NCAA Tournament appearance they had last year.”

-Bill Landis, cleveland.com

Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann desperately needs another ball-handler for next season to spell C.J. Jackson. However, in his search to find an experienced graduate-transfer able to play right away, Holtmann is hitting an understandable wall for one specific reason, the Buckeyes are going to be rebuilding in 2018-19.

The recent commitments from Florida State transfer CJ Walker and five-star forward Alonzo Gaffney have been great for the program’s outlook, but neither will be able to suit up for the Buckeyes until the 2019-20 season, leaving this odd limbo year between the unexpected success with Keita Bates-Diop, Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams, and Andrew Dakich and the infusion of Holtmann’s first real recruiting class.

So, that leaves Holtmann in a tough spot; guys looking to transfer for one final season are usually hoping for a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament, especially if they are moving up to a bigger program. And, unfortunately, it looks like that will be a long-shot for the Buckeyes this year (not that it wasn’t this past season too).

“We’re not hiding who we lost. We’re pretty transparent,” Holtmann said according to Landis. “They look at it, and I think there are some questions. That’s not always the No. 1 criteria, but for guys who haven’t played in the tournament it’s usually a pretty high criteria for them. It’s something we’ve had to address.”

There is also the issue of having to clear Ohio State’s relatively high academic bar for admissions, which again limits the number of players able to join the team for the fall. So, while finding that Dakich-style unicorn would be a huge help for this fall’s Buckeyes, it looks like it might be a much harder sell than anyone anticipated.
