There’s at least one Ohio State prospect expecting to hear his name on Day 1 of the draft.

The day we’ve been waiting months for is finally upon us: Day 1 of the 2018 NFL Draft. Ohio State has always had a reputation for sending pro-ready talent to the NFL year-after-year, but the past few draft classes have been particularly successful making the transition. The Buckeyes have yet another impressive delegation ready to make their mark, with the main event getting underway on Thursday, April 26 at 8 p.m. ET.

There’s a whole host of Buckeyes looking for a chance to live out there dreams, with 11 players being invited to the NFL Combine in early March and 18 players performing at Ohio State’s Pro Day later in the month. Among the 18 prospects are only three non-seniors — Jerome Baker, Sam Hubbard, Denzel Ward — and this is one case where declaring early will probably pay off for 100% of the Buckeye prospects.

Ward specifically is largely expected to be Ohio State’s only first round pick — considered the top CB in this year’s draft class since the end of the last regular season. His size and athleticism have him even considered to be a top-10 pick on Thursday. Kerry Coombs -- despite no longer being among the OSU coaching staff -- has a long history of sending secondary players to the NFL by way of a first-round pick, and Ward is hoping to be the next name on that growing list.

The cornerback isn’t the only Buckeye with Round 1 potential, either. Center Billy Price was expected to be a Day 1 pick up until he injured his pectoral muscle during the bench press event at the combine, and was forced to undergo surgery. He recently told Land-Grant Holy Land that his combine recheck with doctors went “excellent” and that he’s still on track to be cleared for action in June -- just in time for training camp. Despite the good news, Price likely will have fallen into the second round, with some teams hesitant to take on additional rehab.

Defensive end Sam Hubbard has also been mocked to the first and second rounds during the draft process, and could end up being the New England Patriot’s second of their two first round picks. Hubbard’s lacrosse background and versatility— with experience playing multiple positions throughout the defense— would make him a very viable option for the Pats at No. 31.

The Buckeyes are in the thick of it for a class of 2019 standout.

Last week, the Ohio State Buckeyes had a big week with the commitments from athlete Steele Chambers and defensive end Noah Potter. Earlier this week, the Buckeye basketball program got a boost with a commitment from Wake Forest graduate transfer Keyshawn Woods.

While things have cooled off after the recent basketball commitment, the football program finds themselves in another big weekend. They made the cut for a four-star CB/WR, and have a visit this weekend that may mold the 2019 class even more. Let’s take a look at what’s happening on OSU’s recruiting trail.

In Carter’s top 6

Jeffery Carter (Aledo, TX / Aledo) is a four-star wide receiver/cornerback in the 2019 recruiting class. The Texas native received the coveted Buckeye offer back on Feb. 5, 2018, and unveiled his top schools list on Tuesday afternoon. Just after noon on the East Coast, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M, Georgia and Alabama learned that they made the cut for the No. 19 prospect in Texas’ 2019 recruiting cycle, thanks to his post on Twitter.

I’m just trying to be the best to play this game... pic.twitter.com/2zUpsWfuti

— scooby (@jcarter2133) April 25, 2018

Since the start of April, Carter took unofficial visits to Oregon, and an official visit to Texas A&M, according to his player profile on 247sports. In fact, on April 21, he made the trek to Eugene, Oregon, to see what the Duck program was all about. That visit may have reinforced what was already thought to be believed: Oregon is the early leader for Carter’s commitment.

The 247sports crystal ball has 12 predictions for the Aledo native. Of those 12 forecasts, nine of them point to Oregon—with all nine being made since April 23. Texas has the second most predictions with two; Texas A&M received just one.

But, it’s still good that the Buckeyes made his top schools list. On April 20, Carter got the Buckeye fanbase fired up on Twitter with this tweet.

Where my Ohio State fans at? #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/OrWMZAKIeW

— scooby (@jcarter2133) April 20, 2018

Granted, it’s a top-notch graphic design, but it seemed to get people excited. If the Buckeyes really want to jump into the game for Carter, then they got to get him on campus. Also, depending on how the NFL Draft shakes out, that could be another piece to the recruiting puzzle that works in the Buckeyes’ favor. Denzel Ward and Damon Webb are defensive backs that are projected to get drafted; if they both get drafted high, then the potential NFL career path, it seems, would have its best chance to succeed if it ran through Columbus.

A big visit weekend

The quarterback room at Ohio State is already stacked. If things go well this weekend, then QB coach/co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day may have even more talent in the years to come.

Four-star QB Grant Gunnell (Houston / St. Pius X) is making his official visit to OSU this weekend. According to the 247sports composite, Gunnell is the third best pro style QB and 13th best prospect in Texas for 2019.

It’s a crowded pack in the pursuit for Gunnell, as Oklahoma State and Ohio State are both at the top in the 247sports crystal ball. Predictions are also forecasted for LSU and Arkansas, too. Throw in the fact that he went on an official visit to Arizona on April 20, and you have a handful of teams that have shown up on the QB’s radar.

Right now, the QBs for the Buckeyes include Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, Tate Martell and Matthew Baldwin. Baldwin is a freshman, and Martell is a redshirt freshman. If everything stays the same, whoever comes in on the ‘19 class may have to redshirt—and then play backup for a season.

Either way, it will be a big weekend for Day to showcase what the university is about. A very good weekend could steer the Texan north—and add to an already stacked QB department at Ohio State.

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The winningest QB in Ohio State history, JT Barrett is starting his journey in the NFL as an underdog. There are questions about his ability to read defenses and work through his progression, but his intangibles are off the charts along with his leadership qualities. The past two seasons at Ohio State have been hard on him, and the lack of a potent passing game hurt his stock. Known as a single-read and dash player, Barrett has left a lot to be desired. He will have to work hard to earn a spot on an NFL roster or a teams practice squad.

Marcus Baugh was a highly rated recruit out of California that did not have the career that he had imagined for himself. It may not be the ideal situation, but his last year at Ohio State lived up to his expectations after being utilized more often during the season and being the recipient of the game-winning TD to beat Penn State. He is a solid receiver, but he needs to improve his strength and blocking, but he will be a solid contributor when called upon. He is well-rounded and could add depth to a depleted TE group.

Chris Worley is another underrated prospect coming out of Ohio State. A leader at ILB, at Ohio State he played admirably during his tenure at Ohio State, which should help him secure a spot on an NFL team or on a practice squad. He didn’t test as well as he should have, and that has been problematic for him and his draft stock. He is a leader and another team-centric player. It won’t take him long to adjust at the next level.

Tyquan Lewis is another under-the-radar prospect that doesn’t wow you with statistics, but he has a motor. He has average athleticism, but his determination and willingness to do whatever the team needs is what will get him drafted. His ceiling isn’t as high as the others, but he is a leader and a team-first type of player. When placed in the right system, he could blossom into a starter or a key role player.

Jerome Baker is a baller looking for a team to help on defense. A bit of unknown until the Oklahoma game in 2016, he was a little bit up and down in 2017. Without downplaying his skills and his talent, he will add instant depth to an aging and struggling LB core in the NFL. Baker has a nice blend of skills and he proved that during the combine and he is going to be special once he gets it figured out. He is able to play in coverage and be effective, while also being able to stop the run and get to the QB.

Jamarco Jones is a stalwart at Tackle and has been a serviceable starter during his tenure at Ohio State. At 6’4″, 299 lbs, Jones is a bit undersized, but with the right strength and conditioning program, he could grow into a bookend on an offensive line somewhere in the NFL. A lot of scouts have Jones lower than he should be, but it will just motivate him as he grows accustomed to the NFL life at OT. He is certainly not a day one starter, but he could blossom into one in the future. All he needs is a chance.

Jalyn Holmes is another underrated DE prospect, but with a lot of upside due to his skill set. He was on the second team while playing for the Buckeyes, but when he entered the field, he never wasted an opportunity to make a play. He may sit behind a veteran this season, but he is like a sponge. He will be an able body that will take time to develop, but his measurables are good to see. Sam Hubbard, a former Safety that blossomed into a DE while at Ohio State. His projections are all over the place and he is certainly being slept on. At 6’5″, 270 lbs he is a load on the edge, and he will certainly make a team happy after the draft. Nimble for his size, he uses his speed to get past slower Tackles with ease. Billy Price continues another streak, the Buckeyes ability to send NFL ready O-Linemen to the NFL. Price was next in line at Center after Elflein’s departure, but what increases his value is his leadership qualities and his versatility. Non-Ohio State fans may not know that he was the RG the year before taking over the starting Center duties, so he is able to move around if needed. Price was injured during the combine, but he recently received a doctor’s note that stated that he will be ready for camp with no limitations, which could improve his draft stock, but you never know. He is a born leader with a mean streak. Whichever team takes a chance on him, won’t be disappointed.

Denzel Ward is looking to continue the streak of sending another talented prospect into the NFL, and with Ward, he certainly fits the bill with his skill set. Measuring at 5’11, 183 lbs Ward is going to be a terror at the next level. He moves with fluidity and he can shadow opposing WR’s with his athleticism. He could be a day one starter, but in the right situation, he can thrive in the slot before eventually moving to the outside. Ward is projected to be the first Buckeye off the board in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Also, shocker: Ohio State and Alabama are the two best when it comes to recent NFL drafts!

“And in the midst of the anecdotes about the man who gave him his start in college coaching, Meyer touched on a quote from Bruce from long ago that he said sustains him to this day.

″‘When given an opportunity, you swing as hard as you can and give it everything you’ve got,’ ” Meyer said.”

-Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

The speakers at today’s public memorial service for the late Hall of Fame football coach Earle Bruce at Ohio State’s St. John Arena remembered a man who was the consummate teacher, mentor, and father-figure. Former OSU and NFL cornerback William White said of his former coach, “Him and coach Tressel, they’re like my second dad. They recruited me ... they’ve always been a part of my life. This was very meaningful to me. He was a great guy.”

That familial spirit that White still holds for Bruce— and Jim Tressel who was an assistant under Bruce— was also felt by the former 2002 National Championship-winning head coach himself. He said that the single word that best described Bruce was “loyalty.”

“When you were a part of him, whether you were a university or a city, a spouse, a kid, an assistant coach, a friend, a media colleague,” Tressel said, “once you were a part of him, kind of like you know God will never give up on you? Well, Earle will never give up on you.”

That loyalty and family connection didn’t only apply to those in the Ohio State community. After being fired from OSU in 1987, Bruce spent the ‘88 season as the head coach at Northern Iowa, before holding the same position at Colorado State from 1989-92. During his first season in Fort Collins, Bruce had a 1,000-yard rusher named Tony Alford.

When another Bruce protege, Urban Meyer, was looking to hire a running backs coach, he offered the position Alford, then a Notre Dame assistant. While Alford was deciding whether he should leave South Bend or not, he got a call from Bruce, who didn’t hesitate to make his opinion on the situation known.

“Let me help you. Stop thinking, son,” Bruce said according to Alford. “It’s time to come home. Do you understand me?′”

After Alford hung up with his former coach, he turned to his wife and said, “I guess we’re moving.”

Though current Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio wasn’t one of the featured speakers, as an Ohio State graduate assistant in 1983-84, his former boss had a lasting impact on the trajectory of his career.

“And a lot of the things that have happened to me along the way in coaching is really a result of being here with him,” Dantonio told The Dispatch. “I learned a lot of life lessons from him. He was a special guy. He brought it every day.”

Others who eulogized the legendary coach included his grandson, Zach Smith (Ohio State’s current wide receivers coach), Matt McCoy (Bruce’s former radio partner), and longtime Columbus sports anchor, Dom Tiberi.

While their connections with coach Bruce were all different, whether it was player, coach, media member, or grandson, all of the day’s speakers spoke of Earle Bruce showering them an unending love. But, that’s exactly the type of man Smith said that his grandfather was.

“He loved his family, his players, his coaches, the fans,” Smith said. “And he hated no one, except Michigan.”

“No college has signed more eventual first-round picks in the NFL Draft than Urban Meyer has during his time with Ohio State, but in terms of total draft picks Ohio State and Alabama are tied for first nationally over the last three years.”

-Rich Exner, cleveland.com

With the NFL Draft tomorrow, and another Buckeye expected to be taken in the first 15 or so picks in Denzel Ward, now’s a good time to put the recent run of Ohio State’s NFL success into a more national perspective.

Investing in @OSUCoachMeyer ➕ @MickeyMarotti PAYS off #DevelopedHere pic.twitter.com/Y9JART5BlN

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 24, 2018

As you can see, the OSU football program is wisely using the pro success of its former players— and the big dollar contracts that they’ve signed— as a way to recruit the best talent to Columbus, and there is no doubt that the proverb of recruiting being the “lifeblood” of college athletics is proven out by that $700 million figure.

Top recruiting classes —> successful programs —> lots of NFL Draft picks. Since the 2015 draft— the first that featured players signed by Urban Meyer at Ohio State— the Buckeyes and the Alabama Crimson Tide of dominated just about every NFL Draft-related metric.

OSU leads the way with eight first round selections in that time period; Alabama is second with six. The two blue-blood programs are tied for the most total draft picks with 24, and ‘Bama leads the Buckeyes in a weighted breakdown of draftees by three points; the third-place Florida Gators— featuring more than a few Meyer recruits— are 28 points behind OSU.

While the Tide has certainly had more success when it comes to claiming National Championships; the 2015 head-to-head matchup notwithstanding; it is clear that there is a hierarchy in college football recruiting and pro prospect preparation; it’s the big two of Ohio State and Alabama, and everyone else.

“Ohio State Women’s basketball player Kelsey Mitchell and wrestler Kyle Snyder have been named Ohio State’s winners of the 2018 Big Ten Medal of Honor.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Despite the incredible successes that Ohio State athletics have had across its programs over the decades, you would be hard pressed to find two more dominant athletes than Kelsey Mitchell and Kyle Snyder.

Mitchell scored the second-most points in NCAA women’s basketball history and is the OSU women’s program’s only four-time All-American. On the wrestling mat, Snyder is “the only American to ever finish college as a three-time NCAA Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time World Champion.”

However, this week, both received another esteemed recognition as they were named Ohio State’s Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients. The award, which has been given out since 1915, is bestowed upon one men’s and one women’s graduating student-athlete from each B1G institution who has “attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work.”

As Mitchell prepares for her first season in the WNBA as a member of the Indiana Fever, and Snyder prepares to continue his wrestling career on the international stage, they are sure to pick up more and more awards, but as one of— if not the— last accolades of their college careers, it is nice to see two of the most important Buckeyes in athletic department history be honored as such.

In the days since his passing was announced, fans, former players, colleagues, and friends have turned to social media to share their fondest memories of former Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach Earle Bruce, who died at the age of 87 earlier this week, following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

On Wednesday, they will have the chance to do that with others mourning the loss, as Ohio State has announced that there will be a public celebration of the former coach’s life held on campus this coming Wednesday, April 25 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Arena.

If you are unable to be at the event in person, you are able to watch on local Columbus stations, as well as on the Big Ten Network. Online stream is also available.

The Celebration of Life is expected to last about an hour, and will be filled with speakers from the Buckeye football family, including Jim Tressel, Tony Alford, Zach Smith (Bruce’s grandson), Matt McCoy, and Urban Meyer. The OSU Marching Band will also perform “Hang on Sloopy” and “Carmen Ohio”.

Bruce’s funeral will be held the following day, and will be open to just close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that mourners make a donation to the Earle and Jean Bruce Alzheimer’s Research Fund in Neurology, Fund #312531, Care of The Ohio State University Foundation, Attn. Following the end of his coaching career, Bruce remained an important part of the Columbus community. In addition to coaching the city’s Arena Football team for a season, he also served as an analyst for WTVN radio, and as a resource for the coaches that followed him.

Bruce hired current head coach Urban Meyer as an OSU graduate assistant in 1986, and remained a mentor for the rest of his life. Bruce’s grandson, Zach Smith, is Ohio State’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Note to Nebraska AD: Don’t poke the bear!

“You’ve got Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh thinking, ‘We better put a little more into that Nebraska game coming up.’ And that’s the way we want it. They’re running a little bit scared right now. And they won’t admit it. We’ll leave that at that.”

These are the words of Bill Moos, the athletic director at the University of Nebraska, speaking at the Omaha Press Club on Tuesday. With the off-season hire of alumnus Scott Frost, Moos is feeling himself, and believes that the Huskers are poised to again dominate the college football landscape.

According to Chris Heady in the Omaha World-Herald, Moos said, “[The football program’s] got everything lined up to be a golden era again. The facilities, infrastructure, the support, the most amazing and passionate fan bases in college athletics. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Moos— who took over as the Nebraska AD last year following stops at Montana, Oregon, and Washington State— told the assembled press that the offense that Frost is bringing to Lincoln will mirror that of the coach’s undefeated “National Championship”-winning team at UCF.

“We’re gonna run that up-tempo offense we saw (at the spring game),” Moos said, “and we’re gonna get the Blackshirts back to being Blackshirts. And that’s extremely important.”

Now, the AD’s job, especially at these types of rah-rah functions, is to rile up the crowd, and to get excitement “turnt up” heading into a new season. But, Mr. Moos, was that really a good idea? Was it really in Frost and the football team’s best interest to poke the bear that is Ohio State (and I guess Michigan for that matter)?

As I’m sure Moos is aware, Ohio State has beaten the Huskers a combined 118-17 over the past two seasons (56-14 in 2017, 62-3 in 2016). Nebraska hasn’t played Michigan since 2013, a 17-13 Husker win in Ann Arbor, Mich. However, Harbaugh was taking his San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game that year; a lot’s changed since then.

Nebraska will return to Ann Arbor for their Big Ten opener on Sept. 22, and the Buckeyes will host Frost’s Huskers on Nov. 3. How do you think Frost is going to feel when Harbaugh and Meyer are asked ad nauseam about Moos’ comments leading up to there respective games; providing each team an extra chip to place on their shoulder as they prepare.

In his defense, Moos did text the AP that his comments about Michigan and Ohio State were “a bit tongue and cheek.”

He continued, “Meant to point out that the competition is aware that there’s a renewed energy at Nebraska and we aim to get back in the hunt.”

I know that coming from the Pac-12, you might not be aware of this, Mr. Moos, but in the Big Ten, people actually pay attention to what administrators say. And trust me, no one forgets. Ask E. Gordon Gee.
