Tyquan Lewis, DE

In the 2nd Round of this years draft, with the 64th overall pick, the Colts picked up a total of four-second rounders and with their last pick they bolstered their pass rush with Lewis.

Lewis has the tools and the motor that the Colts need to put pressure on opposing offenses. With Larry Johnson serving as his position coach at Ohio State, Lewis is ready to carve out his own path in the NFL joining former Buckeyes John Simon and Malik Hooker, a 1st Round selection from Ohio State a year ago. Re-tooling the defense is the name of the game and with the defenders added during the draft, the Colts might be a dangerous defense in 2018.

Jerome Baker, LB

Baker was the first Buckeye drafted in the 3rd Round with the 73rd pick in this draft, and if you haven’t sensed the overall theme, he joins Raekwon McMillan another former Buckeye in Miami to form a pretty good Linebacker duo.

With speed and coverage skills, Baker will be another sideline to sideline defender who will be tasked to cover Tight Ends and he will also be utilized as a run stuffing Linebacker. Like with the Colts, the Dolphins are looking to inject some young, talented playmakers on defense and with the Patriots aging, they will look to improve to be more competitive within their division.

Sam Hubbard, DE

The Ohio based franchises are doing something that hasn’t been done in quite some time–drafting Buckeyes. This is the third Buckeye drafted by an Ohio based franchise and Hubbard is the second to be taken by the Bengals.

Sam Hubbard, a Notre Dame commit for Lacrosse, was found by Coach Meyer while playing dodgeball and the rest is history. He was one of the playmakers for the Buckeyes that possessed a relentless motor and he led by example. He is surely an athlete and he was vastly undervalued at the draft, but he will give this aging Bengals defensive line a spark in the meantime. Re-tooling this defense will be critical to keep up with their division rival the Steelers and what better way to do so than to add depth to their pass rush.

The former lacrosse standout has followed his football path straight to the NFL.

With the No. 77 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals picked edge defender Sam Hubbard out of Ohio State. While he didn’t end up as a first round (or second round) pick, Hubbard will continuing playing football in the Buckeye State, joining teammate Billy Price in the Queen City.

So, why should you be excited the Bengals drafted Hubbard? We’ve got you covered:

1. Hubbard transformed himself into an elite defensive end

Standing at a chiseled 6’5, 270 lbs, Hubbard is a late bloomer compared to most, yet he made an immediate impact at Ohio State. The former Notre Dame lacrosse commit was also a safety in high school, before he added close to 100 lbs to his frame. Yes, the two year starter (one year behind Joey Bosa) at defensive end was once a 6’4, 187 lb lacrosse player/safety in high school. It takes a lot of hard work to build yourself into an every down Big Ten defensive end.

2. Availability is the best ability

A player who prepares himself at the level that Hubbard does, it’s no surprise that he’s played in every game during his three seasons at Ohio State. His measurables not only pass the eyeball test, but it’s also a big reason as to why he doesn’t miss games. His tape could be flashier and his stats could be a little better, but he’s playing almost every down on an absolutely loaded defensive line. Hubbard is not going to be one to sit in the cold tub and be complacent as an early round pick. He’s going to improve and be there everyday.

3. Constant improvement

If you take a peep at Hubbard’s stat line, he’s improved every single year. His solo tackles, his sacks, his tackles for loss and his forced fumbles all improved over Hubbard’s three seasons. If you keep in mind that he’s still relatively new at the position, his improvement should come to no surprise. His hard work and dedication to his craft only means that he will continue to improve and continue to a better defensive end at the NFL level.

4. Hubbard once ate Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley... at the same time

Barkley is considered the most ‘can’t miss’ prospect of this draft and the best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson. However, Hubbard once destroyed both Barkley and his quarterback on the same play, which also happened to fuel his Buckeyes to their amazing comeback win over Penn State. Hubbard finished that game with four tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

5. Hubbard tormented a top quarterback

Not only will Saquon Barkley have nightmares about Hubbard, but one of, if not the best quarterback in this class, Sam Darnold, will also have nightmares about the Ohio State defensive end. Hubbard racked up a whopping 2.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and four total tackles in Ohio State’s domination of USC in this year’s Cotton Bowl. Darnold was under siege all night and Hubbard got the best of the talented USC offensive line and their signal caller. Let’s see if Hubbard can hit Darnold a few times in the NFL.

Any concerns about Hubbard?

Some. Although he rebuilt his body to become an All-Big Ten defensive end in Ohio State’s 4-3 scheme, he still looks like he could play outside linebacker. Will he be able to set the edge at the NFL level against the best offensive tackles in the world? He improved against the run every single season, but that will be a big question. And although he can rush the passer with speed, he’ll need to add more to his pass rushing arsenal to truly be counted on as an every down defensive end the league.

Hey, did you know Hubbard was supposed to play lacrosse at Notre Dame?

One of three Buckeyes to forego a final year of collegiate eligibility at Ohio State this season, defensive lineman Sam Hubbard has been selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 77 overall pick in the third round of the NFL Draft.

In his three years in Columbus, Hubbard amassed 116 tackles, including 13.5 for loss during his junior season. A second-team all Big Ten honoree, and a first-team Academic All-American in 2016, Hubbard’s journey to the NFL has been a unique (and oft told) story. Originally committed to Notre Dame’s lacrosse team, the Cincinnati native played safety in high school before making the jump to end in college.

Though a little undersized compared to other NFL DEs at 6’5, 265 pounds, his skill and experience compensate for the lack of size and top-shelf athleticism. Hubbard has been praised for the consistency of his play and technique, as well as his high football intelligence.

However, while his hand-fighting skills and strong rush help him against larger offensive linemen, his average speed and limited explosion off the line make him more of a grinder than transcendent talent.

That being typed, now that Hubbard has found his NFL home, due to his experience in Columbus, he has a chance to compete for a starting spot as a rookie.

Congrats to Sam, and good luck at the next level!

The Buckeye linebacker is ready to make his impact at the next level.

With the No. 73 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins picked linebacker Jerome Baker Jr. out of Ohio State. The Buckeye decided to declare for the draft early, but has plenty of experience. Baker was the “Next Man Up” for the team, contributing as a leader for the defense after the three Buckeye linebackers were drafted in 2016-17.

So, why should you be excited the Dolphins drafted Baker? We’ve got you covered:

1. He’s really, really fast

Baker might be one of the smaller LB prospects in this year’s NFL Draft class (see below), but his size also allows him to be one of the fastest. His official 4.53 in the 40-yard dash was good enough to finish No. 4 among the linebackers at the combine.

#AllAmerican Bowl alum, #Buckeyes linebacker Jerome Baker clocks a 4.53 40. Wheels. pic.twitter.com/lxD1YxDnD2

— All-American Bowl (@19AllAmerican) March 4, 2018
2. Baker isn’t a guy to worry about off the field

Even before joining the ranks at Ohio State, Baker was leading the charge as a student-athlete taking a stand against sexual assault and domestic violence. During his senior year in high school, Baker recruited other top athletes in the Cleveland area and put together a seminar to discuss how male athletes can step up to combat violence against women and make a pledge to stop it if they see it.

“It was unreal. Jerome got a group of athletes to pledge together to not condone or stand silent if they are aware of a woman or girl being physically, sexually or emotionally abused.” — Ty White, Baker’s mentor, via Tom VanHaaren, ESPN
3. He’s a tackling machine

The two-year starter for Ohio State notched 155 total tackles during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, and in four games claimed over 10 tackles — with a career-high of 16 total and 12 solo tackles in the 2017 Big Ten title game against Wisconsin. He finished his Buckeye career with 17.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks.

— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 15, 2017
4. He understands what it takes to be a LB in the NFL

Not only is Baker looking to be the next successful linebacker out of Ohio State, but he’s got some of the best in the league to look up to through those Buckeye connections. He’s had a chance to pick the brains of players like Ryan Shazier and Darron Lee, and knows what it’ll take mentally to handle the responsibility that comes along with playing the LB position in the NFL.

“I can do it all. I’m a leader. I’m comfortable calling the defense if I have to. I can change the defense based on the formation and looks we get from the offense. I think my football IQ is what makes me so great.” -- Jerome Baker via Justin Melo, DraftWire
5. He’s just trying to live his best life

Anytime you’re around Jerome Baker, you just want to smile. The kid is a ball of positivity, and knows that the opportunities he’s been afforded, both to play for Ohio State and now in the NFL, should be enjoyed each step of the way.

At his pro day workout, Baker kept repeating his new motto: “I’m just living my best life.” And with the dedication he’s proven to his teams in the past, along with his motivation to succeed at the next level, there’s no doubt that he’s going to make good decisions on and off the field, and have fun doing it.

Any concerns about Baker?

The biggest knock against the incoming NFL rookie is his size. At 6’1 and 229 pounds, Baker is on the smaller size for players at his position, but as others before him, he’s used that as a benefit rather than a hindrance. He did weigh in at 232 at Ohio State’s pro day, so putting on weight has seemingly been a priority for the Buckeye as he makes the transition.

So long as that extra weight doesn’t keep him from out-running opponents, he should be good to go for his rookie season.

One of the most athletic linebackers in the country is headed to the NFL.

One of the three Buckeyes to declare for the NFL Draft early, linebacker Jerome Baker has made that decision pay off, as today, he was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the third round with the No. 73 pick.

In his three seasons as a Buckeye, the Cleveland native accounted for 158 tackles, including 17.5 for loss. A two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention by both the conference’s coaches and media, Baker seems to step up under the brightest of lights. He had a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown against Oklahoma in 2016, and had a career-high 16 tackles against the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2017 Big Ten Championship Game.

Baker’s game is defined by his speed and athleticism. At 6’1, 225 pounds, he should benefit from putting on muscle via an NFL lifting regimen. However, his natural abilities allow him to limit the production of offensive skill position players; as he was instrumental in doing against this draft’s No. 2 pick, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. He also has the ability to cover receivers in space.

However, his relative lack of strength means that it is difficult for him to shed blocks, and powerful ball carriers can break solo tackle attempts from Baker. That being typed, his speed allows him to compensate for a lot of the deficiencies that he had in college, and hopefully will improve upon in the pros.

Congratulations to Baker as he takes the next step in his playing career.

One of the Buckeyes’ defensive leaders is ready for a bigger role in the NFL.

With the No. 64 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts picked defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis out of Ohio State. Lewis was the last pick of the second round, and was picked up by the Colts via a trade with the Cleveland Browns.

So, why should you be excited the Colts drafted Lewis? We’ve got you covered:

1. A top sacker while at Ohio State

Lewis ended his Buckeye career as the No. 5 all-time sacker. After a freshman year that saw only .5 sacks, the remaining three years in Columbus showed Lewis’ consistency. He had eight sacks as a sophomore; eight sacks as a junior; and seven sacks as a senior, which was a season that saw him start in only 10 games. In his sophomore and junior years, Lewis started in all 13 games each season.

2. He’s versatile

Bouncing off the first point, Lewis’ knack for getting to the quarterback shows off his versatility. Regardless of how he lines up or the formation he’s put in, the Tarboro, N.C., native has proved time and time again that he can succeed.

Ohio State’s Jalyn Holmes and Tyquan Lewis will have some added value by being able to rush off the edge or kicked in at 3tech in subpackages... Both win here at 3T (also never seen 4 defenders meet at QB like this)..

Lewis reminds me of Brandon Graham in flashes... pic.twitter.com/CfqeyM2dPU

— Ben Fennell (@BenFennell_NFL) April 22, 2018

The tweet by Ben Fennell, who is one of the draft experts for the NFL Network, alludes to what Lewis could be at the next level. Brandon Graham was part of the Super Bowl winning Philadelphia Eagles, and has been part of the team since being drafted with the 13th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

That’s a good comparison, however, Graham went to Michigan and couldn’t beat his rival; Lewis, on the other hand, won every contest he was in against the Wolverines.

3. Consistent Improvement

With Sam Hubbard and Nick Bosa in the fold for snaps during the 2016-17 season, Lewis lost out on in-game chances. However, he showed improvement after the Buckeyes secured the Cotton Bowl victory in early January.

Weigh-in...
OSU DE Tyquan Lewis:
6-2 3/4, 276.
Looks like he weighs 250. Ripped.#SeniorBowl

— Chase Goodbread (@ChaseGoodbread) January 23, 2018

In one last contest against other prospects hoping to increase their draft stock, Lewis put together a highlight reel in the Senior Bowl. In the tweet below, he continued to do what he does best: sack the quarterback.

Ohio State DE Jalyn Holmes with the SACK pic.twitter.com/qLOyaTUeBo

— NCAAF Nation (@NCAAFNation247) January 27, 2018

Constant improvement is what you want in a guy you draft. With Lewis, that’s exactly what you’re getting. If he keeps with the upward trajectory, he has the chance to move up from situational pass rusher, to a mainstay on the defensive line.

4. A hunger for the game

Leaving unfinished business on the table is something Lewis doesn’t take lightly. He graduated from OSU in December 2016, but used up his remaining year of in Columbus because, according to his draft bio from OSU, he was “hungry for more”.

Instead of following the scintillating lights of the NFL Draft—and the accompanying images of making money in professional football—he chose to make another run for a national championship. If someone has intrinsic drive, then it’s worth investing in them.

With Lewis being taken off the board, obviously this front office must see the same thing: drive isn’t a problem from for this Buckeye alum.

5. Rings, awards, and other things

We’ve gone over a quartet of reasons for why it’s an exciting time for Lewis to be drafted into the NFL. The fifth reason to be excited involves his previous successes.

Not everyone can win on the college level, but when they do, that experience—and the understanding of what it takes—is invaluable to a franchise.

Six championships were won in Lewis’s time as a Buckeye, including the 2014 College Football Playoff National Championship, two Big Ten Championships, and a trio of bowl wins.

Lewis already climbed the college football mountain, but the things he learned while donning the Scarlet and Gray will go a long way in helping his pro team in their quest for a Super Bowl.

Any concerns about Lewis?

One concern with Lewis on the D-Line is his ability to halt the running game. In the NFL, he’ll be facing some of the best running backs in all of football—which are much better than what he’d see week-in and week-out in the college game. If a running back makes a cut to the outside (or inside) of Lewis, will he be able to get his feet situated and make the tackle? His NFL.com draft profile weaknesses included “not a force against the run,” so we’ll see if that will change at the next level.

Some attribution to that weakness comes from being part of a rotational line that included Sam Hubbard and Nick Bosa. However, Lewis was drafted ahead of Hubbard, so the Colts front office saw something they liked in the North Carolina native.

The former Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year has the chance to be an NFL steal.

No one has ever played in more games (55) at Ohio State than Tyquan Lewis. And after returning to Columbus for a fifth year— following his graduation with a degree in sociology—, Lewis will now be continuing his football career as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, who selected the defensive lineman with the No. 64 pick to end out the second round of the NFL Draft.

A two-time first-team All-Big Ten Selection, Lewis was the 2016 Big Ten Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year. In his four seasons on the field, Lewis recorded 23.5 sacks and 36.5 tackles for loss, forcing five fumbles. His sack total ranks him fifth all-time at Ohio State. While seeing limited playing time during his red-shirt freshman year, Lewis has been consistent in the sack department since, notching 8, 8, and 7 in the subsequent years.

A two-time team captain, Lewis had long been a highly respected member of the Ohio State community, both on and off the field. However, as he moves to the NFL, he will need to work on his technique, as he is not the elite-level athlete that most impact defensive linemaen are.

Scouts are concerned that he is not especially smooth or fluid with his movements at the point of attack, and can be pushed around. However, his size and initial speed should be enough to allow him to have favorable match-ups against interior offensive lineman. Clearly he has shown that he can be productive in one of the best conferences in the country, and playing alongside elite talent on the defensive line.

Congrats to Tyquan on realizing his dream of playing at the next level.

With 2 Buckeyes already off the board, how many will get the call on Day 2?

Ohio State wasn’t expecting to have the same type of first-round haul as they did back in 2016, but the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft ended with two Buckeyes being picked — each to Ohio teams. The Cleveland Browns took Denzel ward with the No. 4 overall pick, and the Cincinnati Bengals snagged Billy Price at No. 21 overall.

Tonight marks Day 2 of the event, and will get underway at 7 p.m. ET on NFL Network, ESPN/ESPN 2 and Fox. Each team will have seven minutes to make their Round 2 picks, and 5 minutes per pick in Round 3.

There are still plenty of Buckeyes on the board, and Friday night should be a fun time for Ohio State fans. Defensive end Sam Hubbard was occasionally mocked to the first round through the pre-draft process, but since he didn’t end up going Round 1, he should be an early pick up on Day 2. Additionally, offensive tackle Jamarco Jones, defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis, DE Jalyn Holmes and linebacker Jerome Baker are considered Round 2 and 3 prospects.

We’ll update this post as each pick is made and debate teams’ choices in the comments.

This year’s draft isn’t even over yet, but it doesn’t hurt to look ahead a little.

Next year draft gone be crazy for tOSU .. I’m calling it now RECORDS WILL BE BROKEN #1stRoundU

— 7 E R A D J A (@7eradja) April 27, 2018

Two Buckeyes were drafted in last night’s first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and there are about a dozen more former Ohio State players waiting to hear their name. It isn’t likely that all 18 eligible prospects make the transition, but the draft class is expected to produce upwards of 10 draft picks, which isn’t too shabby.

The number of Buckeyes mocked as a draft pick would be considerably higher if some of the returning players — wide receivers specifically — would’ve chosen to declare instead of make another CFP run in 2018. Instead, as Teradja Mitchell pointed out, next year’s draft class out of Ohio State could be another record-setting group.

We’re just two years removed from the 2016 OSU draft class, which featured some of the biggest names to ever suit up for Urban Meyer, and included five first-round draft picks and a slew of others to have their name called. Saying the players coming out in 2019 will beat that kind of delegation might be a bit of a stretch, but there’s no doubt that NFL interest will be strong throughout next season, and could come close to usurping the 2016 crew.

Not only will the Buckeyes have a long list of seniors eligible to make the jump, including a handful of receivers (Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, C.J. Saunders) and some impressive o-line talent (Demetrius Knox, Malcolm Pridgeon, Isaiah Prince), but they should expect a few more players to declare early for the draft compared to this season. Some younger guys who could make the jump include Mike Weber, Kendall Sheffield -- assumed to be the next OSU DB taken in Round 1 --, Damon Arnette, Dre’Mont Jones, and most notably, Nick Bosa.

So, Mitchell isn’t too far off thinking that next year’s NFL Draft haul for Ohio State will be another one to add to the record books.

“This is exactly what I wanted, to stay in Ohio and bring the Ohio State brand to Cincinnati.”

-Billy Price, via Andrew T Hamilton, Cincy Jungle

So much time has been spent since the NFL combine analyzing Price’s pec injury and wondering whether or not his recovery would affect his draft stock. We didn’t have to wait long for an answer, however, with the Cincinnati Bengals picking the Buckeye at No. 21 overall.

Granted, he wasn’t the first center off the board, but he came quickly thereafter. Price had talked at Ohio State’s pro day about meeting with the Bengals’ brass several times, both at the combine and in the weeks afterward, and even had a quick run-in with Marvin Lewis while the head coach was in Columbus.

Things seemed to have worked out for Price, who still earned a first round pick and gets to stay in his home-state of Ohio. The Bengals are pretty happy too, with center being a top priority for the organization heading into the draft. Not only did they get a guy who can play Day 1, but they got someone who isn’t afraid to put in the work and take a leadership role among his teammates.

It’s Senior Week for Ohio State softball, and they are heading into a weekend matchup against Maryland. The series will mark the final conference series at Buckeye Field for the 2018 season — the non-conference season finale is next Wednesday, May 2.

(Seriously, how is it over already!?)

The Buckeyes are celebrating seven seniors throughout the weekend, including Becca Gavin, Ashley Goodwin, Maddie Marotti, Shelby McCombs, Bailee Sturgeon, Alex Vargas, and Taylor White. The team has a good chance of pulling off some wins to cap off these seniors’ college careers, with the Buckeyes leading the all-time series against Maryland 9-2.

She may not be a senior, but junior shortstop — and batter extraordinaire — Lilli Piper was named one of 25 finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Pipe leads the Buckeyes in just about every offensive category, and was named Big Ten Player of the Week three times this season. The Player of the Year honor will be announced May 29.

“Fresh off another dominating run through the Big Ten regular season, Ohio State had four players receive All-Big Ten honors and the Buckeyes swept the yearly awards.”

-Ohio State Athletics

The men’s tennis team has been having a heck of a spring, and to add to their successful conference run, four Buckeyes and head coach Ty Tucker received All-Big Ten Honors.

Three Buckeyes earned the first team designation, Mikael Topegaard, John McNally and J.J. Wolf, with teammate Martin Joyce taking home second-team honors. As far as individual awards go, Topegaard was named Big Ten Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Year, the second time he’s won the honor; McNally was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year, becoming the fourth consecutive Buckeye to win it; and Ty Tucker took home Coach of the Year, his 12th occasion in the last 13 seasons.

This marked the first time since 2011 that Ohio State swept the Big Ten end of year honors, and just the fifth time in conference history that it’s happened. The Buckeyes lead the B1G with 88 all-conference selections since 1974.

LGHL Buck-I-Guy attempts to apologize to Earle Bruce’s family, fails miserably

Buck-I-Guy attempts to apologize to Earle Bruce’s family, fails miserably

I mean, at least he tried. But, dude, try harder.

“I’m sorry. I screwed up.” Those five words were pretty easy to type, and yet they seem so difficult for public figures to say when confronted with their misdeeds, large or small. Fortunately in the case of Buck-I-Guy, real name John Chubb, the offense in question is relatively small compared to what we’ve seen from others in the public eye in recent months. But, that didn’t stop the OSU “super fan” from bungling the apology anyway.

On Friday morning, Chubb posted for the first time on Facebook since the incident at the memorial for the late Hall of Fame coach Earle Bruce on Wednesday. His statement was short, “I what (sic) to Apologize To Coach Earl Bruce’s Family and Friends Former Coach’s (sic) Former Players for signing a Portrait not met (sic) for the public John Chubb”.

I what to Apologize To Coach Earl Bruce’s Family and Friends Former Coach’s Former Players for signing a Portrait not met for the public John Chubb

Posted by John Chubb on Friday, April 27, 2018

In fact, it was so short that it seemed to lack any self-reflection, admittance of fault, or even proofreading. Yes, Chubb said “I what (sic) to Apologize,” but then went on to apologize for the wrong thing. He made it sound like it was just a simple misunderstanding that the portrait— which was clearly marked for former players and coaches— wasn’t supposed to be signed by the guy wearing a cowboy hat and cape.

Following the fauxpology, Chubb has been trying to remind his friends and followers on Facebook of what a good guy he is by posting pictures of himself (in costume) at various charity events around Columbus. I mean, I guess that’s “Crisis Management 101,” just don’t be so blatantly obvious about it.

Look, I don’t wish any ill-will on Chubb, and give the guy credit for at least realizing that he needed to apologize, but perhaps some self-awareness would be good for him right now. I know that being “Buck-I-Guy” has gotten him into a lot of cool experiences for a long time, and good for him for making his own best life, but now might be a good time to chill and practice a little humility.

Maybe don’t put on the all-white costume, or paint your mustache red for a while. Football season is more than four months away, you can give it a rest until then. Although, I would humbly suggest that maybe you give it a rest then too.
