It’s been a fairly quiet week in Buckeye recruiting, but Ohio State is still firing off offers.

It’s been a very offer heavy week so far in Buckeye recruiting. As they wait on possible commitments from players like quarterback Grant Gunnell, safety Jordan Battle, and offensive lineman Harry Miller, among others, Ohio State is having no issues keeping busy. They issued five offers Monday to 2020 stars like Jaquavion Fraziars, Rylie Mills, Fadil Diggs, and Chris Tyree, as well as 2019 tight end Ethan Rae.

We have you covered for all of that in yesterday’s addition of State Secrets, and on Tuesday, Ohio State issued two more offers. The two newest offers are to Permian (Odessa, TX) receiver Peyton Powell, and Miami Central (Hollywood, FL) cornerback Henry Gray. Let’s take a look at what these offers mean.

Peyton Powell

This offer is yet another case of Ohio State expanding their search for receivers in the 2019 class. Powell, a 6-foot-2, 182-pounder, plays both safety and receiver for his high school, and even spends some time at quarterback according to his Twitter account.

Wow.. Humble and Thankful beyond measure to announce I have received an offer From THE Ohio State University! #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/GkpszCuCuU

— Peyton Powell (@PPowell_) May 15, 2018

This offer is, more likely than not, a result of a coach, or multiple coaches on Ohio State’s staff feeling confident that Powell is a bit of an underrated product, and wanting to get in on his recruitment early. He only holds 12 offers to this point, and comes in at 496th in 247Sports player rankings.

Ohio State is really his first major offer, as he holds offers from Baylor and Georgia Tech, as well as Arkansas and Texas Tech, but to this point, no blue blood schools have offered but Ohio State. When watching his film, it’s not hard to see why Ohio State likes him, though it’s also pretty easy to tell why he comes in a bit under recruited to this point.

Powell’s upside is his greatest asset. He’s blazing fast on tape, and absolutely electric with the ball in his hands. He’s a fantastic athlete, especially at 6-foot-2, and he obviously has the physical ability to play receiver at a high level. The reason he’s not been highly recruited as a receiver is because he rarely lines up as a receiver.

It’s hard to gleam much of anything from his film about his skills as a receiver, other than the fact that he’s fast, strong, and really dangerous with the ball. Urban Meyer loves to take at least one raw receiver prospect like this every class, and Powell fits that description very well.

Henry Gray

The offer to Gray is a very interesting one. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound cornerback is ranked No. 73 nationally in the 2020 class, and is widely considered to be one of the best corners in the entire class. What makes this offer so interesting, however, is that Gray has been committed to Miami since March 31, after he took an unofficial visit to the campus just miles from where he goes to school.

A 2020 commitment, at this point, means basically nothing. Gray is still two years out from signing with any school, and since his commitment, he’s picked up 10 offers, and will certainly continue to pick up more over the next few months. Ohio State is in now (they wouldn’t offer if they didn’t think they have a chance), and will likely try to get Gray on campus sometime this summer.

Here comes the boom?

Ohio State could be picking up their next commitment on Monday. Longtime linebacker target Brandon Smith announced on Twitter that he’d be announcing his commitment on May 21, at 5 p.m., from his high school. Ohio State offered the Mineral, Virginia, product way back in June 2017, and has hosted him three times during his recruitment—most recently in April.

This part of the journey started as little kid.

*I will be announcing my commitment to______?

*When: Monday May 21st @5pm ⏰
*Where: LCHS Auditorium

*The public is invited to join us.

*No interviews until May 21st. pic.twitter.com/ymhAlGMJKH

— Brandon Smith (@brand0n_smith12) May 13, 2018

Despite their best efforts, I think the 6-foot-4, five-star product is likely headed elsewhere. Penn State has led this commitment for quite a while, and unless Texas A&M, Florida State or the Buckeyes make a late push, Smith is likely headed to Happy Valley.

Mid-Week game @ Cincinnati from Cincinnati, OH

Midweek games are killing us. We’ve been giving up the ground we gain on weekends by losing midweek. Today’s loss may not cost us too bad it appears. Big group 1 road wins by Minnesota and Indiana have helped offset some of the damage done by our loss.

Sparty got pounded by CMU today, but they played Minnesota tough last weekend. They’ll be fighting for their B1G tournament lives this weekend, so they’ll be motivated for sure. We should be too because this series is every bit as big for us. A series loss to a 200+ RPI team would likely put us in bubble territory per Boyd’s RPI needs report. Going into the B10 tourney needing to win a couple games to get off the bubble is the last place we want to be.

Despite today, Our resume is still at large worthy and we’re comfortably in at the moment, but again....history has shown us that we can’t breathe easy until the very end...we’ve blown a few at large bids the last 8 years. :smash:

Good news Buckeye fans: Ohio State-Oregon still is the highest-viewed college football game.

As TV broadcasting schedules are being drawn up for the 2018 college football season, the viewership numbers from last year are now being released.

In a statement by the National Football Foundation, the most viewed game last season was, unsurprisingly, the College Football Playoff National Championship Game between Alabama-Georgia. The overtime thriller that saw the Crimson Tide take home the trophy brought in 29,932,000 viewers. However, the Ohio State-Oregon title game of 2015 still holds the title of most viewed college football game; the Buckeyes-Ducks showdown in Dallas captivated an audience of 33,395,000 viewers.

While the Scarlet and Gray didn’t have the most viewed game last season, they made up for it with fan attendance. In the same report outlined by the NFF, Ohio State brought 1,254,160 football enthusiasts through the turnstiles across all home, away and neutral site games. At home, the Buckeyes averaged 107,495 fans to the games—good enough for second in the nation. Michigan led the college football world with home game attendance, wrangling in an average of 111,589.

(It should be noted that Ohio Stadium has a capacity 104,944, and Michigan Stadium has a capacity of 107,601).

Below are the top-10 most viewed games from the college football regular season.

The 2017 Big Ten Championship was FOX’s highest viewed college football game since the 2013 version of the B1G title game. In both contests, Ohio State was one of the participants.

For those that have repressed the 2013 conference championship game, OSU was riding a 24-game win streak and a No. 2 ranking heading into the clash with Michigan State in Indianapolis. The Buckeyes led 24-20 after the third quarter and had a trip to Pasadena for the BCS Championship Game game within grasp. However, a 14-point surge by the Spartans upended that dream for the Scarlet and Gray.

With FOX having a bigger stake in college football-- and especially Big Ten— broadcasts, it’s not a surprise that the 2017 season brought record highs in viewership. An average of 3,625,000 viewers tuned in for college football games on FOX—a 23 percent increase from the year before. Marquee matchups like Texas-USC carried the non-conference slate, while the Big Ten partnership propelled FOX to higher views throughout the season. It also didn’t hurt to have great games in Ohio State-Michigan and Ohio State-Penn State on the network, either.

For ESPN, Ohio State was part of the highest viewed Thursday night opening weekend game on record. Playing in Bloomington, Indiana, on Aug. 31, the Buckeyes toppled the Indiana Hoosiers, 49-21, with 5,400,000 viewers tuning in. The game was back-and-forth in the first half, with the Hoosiers actually leading at halftime, 14-13. However, J.K. Dobbins burst onto the scene rushing for 181 yards on 29 carries to help the Bucks avoid the upset.

While OSU fans may have not liked the Oklahoma game (and the Baker Mayfield antics after it), the game was good content for ABC. For a non-opening week CFB game, the Buckeyes-Sooners clash in The ‘Shoe was the highest overnight rating in seven years for the network.

With the announcement yesterday that FOX has the broadcasting rights to Ohio State-Michigan again in 2018, that’s a marquee Big Ten game that’s pulled away from ABC/ESPN. Michigan-Michigan State will also be on FOX this season, so expect even more conference games to have the FOX overlays instead of ABC/ESPN.

For Big Ten (and especially Ohio State) fans, get ready for more Buckeye games to have the smooth sounds of Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt and Jenny Taft on the call, rather than ESPN/ABC’s Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Tom Rinaldi and Maria Taylor.

FOX is making noise in the college football world, and with a few more years left in the rights deal, they appear to be increasing their footprint—especially with Big Ten games. Fox Entertainment Group (21st Century Fox) owns 51% of the Big Ten Network.

LGHL Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber are leading on and off the field

Dobbins and Weber are showing the younger guys how to become great and it’s paying off.

“It makes everyone better. It makes everyone in the room better. It makes our team better. It makes you more accountable in everything you do as far as in the meeting room and on and off the field because you have other guys who are pushing you. It’s a close group, though, and they enjoy pushing one another. That’s what we’re looking for.”

- Tony Alford via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber are returning as leaders on this Ohio State team. Dobbins rushed for over 1,000 yards last season as a true freshman, and Weber did the same two years ago. This is the first time that the Buckeyes have had two 1,000-yard rushers on the roster at the same time under Urban Meyer. Carlos Hyde was gone by the time Ezekiel Elliott was hitting his stride and Weber wasn’t a factor until Elliott left.

But now they have two bonafide stars in the backfield and it’s paying off both on the field and off of it. With young players like Brian Snead and Master Teague coming into their first season, Dobbins and Weber have been teachers in the meeting rooms. And down the line, when Teague and Snead are ready to take over, they’ll have plenty of experience in terms of learning how the game works.

“Dwayne is a young guy that came in against our rivals and did a heck of a job. You go back and watch that again, he came in on the first drive and took us down the field and scored on that first drive against that defense. So he’s got a great release, he’s got good size and he’s a mobile-enough quarterback. It is going to change how we attack defenses.”

- Urban Meyer via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Since the decision came from Joe Burrow to transfer from Ohio State, the reins have been fully handed to Dwayne Haskins and that continued when Urban Meyer addressed the media, acknowledging that Haskins would have the first crack at starting this season. Meyer mentioned that Haskins ability has proven itself in a big-game situation already, like against Michigan when the Buckeyes were down when J.T. Barrett exited the game. Haskins will now have the chance to lead the offense as a starter and although Tate Martell is still on the roster as the backup, it’s clear the coaching staff has given Haskins the green light.

Haskins arrival as the starter should allow new looks on offense to open up this season, as he’s a different quarterback than Barrett was. Haskins is a pocket passer who isn’t incredibly mobile - though he did show he can get out of bind if need be - but he has an extremely gifted arm, and that should open things up in the passing game where Barrett could not.

“Since then, other first-year starters have struggled, most notably right tackle Isaiah Prince against Penn State, Michigan and Clemson in the 2016 season. With a few first-year starters in 2018, it’s totally reasonable to think there will be some rough patches along the way.”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

An always important position is on the offensive line. The offense goes as the offensive line goes, and Ohio State is in an interesting position with a lot of mixed experience entering the 2018 season. From left to right on the line it looks like the lineup will be Thayer Munford at left tackle, Michael Jordan at left guard, Brady Taylor at center, Demetrius Knox at right guard and Prince at right tackle. There’s plenty of experience coming from Michael Jordan and Isaiah Prince, and Knox filled in for the injured Branden Bowen last season towards the end of the year. Munford and Taylor will be brand new faces in terms of starting, so what does it mean for the Buckeyes?

It’s probably going to follow a similar path as previous seasons. Normally Ohio State’s offensive line struggles in the beginning of the year, and by the end of the year makes a very solid unit - enough for a playoff run. But Dwayne Haskins could help make a difference as well with his arm in speeding up the process of getting guys ready with how quickly he can release the ball.

Aaron Craft, William Buford, Jon Diebler, and more are looking to avenge their double OT Final Four loss from 2017.

With yesterday’s announcement that three former Buckeye basketball stars would be a part of Big X in this year’s The Basketball Tournament, many fans disappointingly assumed that that meant that there wouldn’t be a return of Team Scarlet and Gray, which lost in double overtime of last year’s semifinals.

However, today the Columbus Sports commission confirmed that the Buckeye team will be back this season, again coached by Scoonie Penn and Evan Turner. On the roster, as of now, are returning players William Buford, Aaron Craft, Jon Diebler, Dallas Lauderdale, David Lighty and Evan Ravenel. Joining them this summer will be former Buckeye B.J. (don’t call me Byron) Mullens. Additions to the roster will be announced later. Jared Sullinger was instrumental in last year’s TBT run. No word yet on if he will return.

Team Scarlet and Gray very well could face off with Big X, featuring former OSU stars Andrew Dakich, Jae’Sean Tate, and Kam Williams, along with players from Michigan and Illinois.

This year, Columbus’ Capital University will host an opening round regional from July 20 through 22nd. Team Scarlet and Gray will likely open there, as they are automatically entered into the field of 72, based off of last year’s success and popularity.

The gambling law change is yet another way for everyone but players to profit on college athletics

Every Saturday, from August 25th, to December 29th in 2018, there will be college football available for fans all over the country to watch. From Hawaii @ Colorado State in Week 1, to the College Football Playoff National Championship game on January 7th, there will be thousands of games being played by thousands of 18-22ish year old athletes.

In that four-and-a-half month period, there’s plenty of money to be made. Every televised game generates advertisement revenue for the NCAA, TV networks, advertisers, and individual conferences and teams. Every game will generate revenue from ticket sales and concessions. That money, once again, will go to schools, which will then likely go to coaches, administrators, facilities, and any other whims of the school.

During the season, various TV networks will advertise upcoming games using highlights from past games, from the nation’s most exciting players, athletes like Ohio State’s JT Barrett, Tyquan Lewis, Jayln Holmes and Mike Weber, or USC’s Sam Darnold and Notre Dame’s Brandon Wimbush, among many others every week, every year.

The promotions benefit the TV networks, the NCAA, and the teams participating, because they’ll drive eyes to the game, and increase revenue for all parties. None of this basic college sports economics is new to the system. Ever since NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma in 1984, TV networks have been able to sell college football with ease.

A new beneficiary was introduced to college sports yesterday. The Supreme Court, unsurprisingly so, ruled that sports betting being illegal is unconstitutional. So what does this mean? Well, it means that many states are likely to legalize sports gambling, and they’ll almost certainly do so before the college football season. This also means that the newest group legally allowed to profit off of college sports are the fans and followers of the sport.

They join a group that includes TV networks, the NCAA, universities, unaffiliated clothing and merchandise shops, and pretty much everyone else in America. You know who that group doesn’t include? The only group of people in the country now that can’t profit off the work of college athletes? The absolutely endless, grueling, physically devastating work of college athletes? The only group in America left that can’t profit off of college athletes is college athletes.

This whole system of various groups profiting off of college sports depends entirely on the athletes that play the games. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry, built on “student-athletes,” and fully predicated on absolutely never paying the players that do the work to make the game happen.

That phrase, “student-athlete” is a common answer to why young men doing an increasingly brutal and violent job aren’t allowed to legally receive pay for their work. The fact that players at D1 schools are given scholarships to the schools of their choice is talked about as sufficient remuneration for anywhere from three to five years of hours in the weight room, on the track, on the practice field, and ultimately, in the games.

The general evaluation the “free” education athletes are receiving is also, almost always, extremely overblown. Cases like the tutor scandal at North Carolina are not in any way rare in college sports, and more likely than not, if a team wants to compete, their players are working their full-time job as football players and not actually benefiting from the full scholarship they’re given.

No matter what the NCAA wants to think, or what fans want to think, college football is about football, and about making money off of it. Not about seeking a higher education, or being a balanced student and athlete. That takes us back to the original point of the matter, how, in the grand scheme of things, what players receive for their work absolutely pales in comparison to what everyone else in America can now make off that work.

None of this is to say that there’s anything inherently wrong with betting on sports, pro or college. If that’s how someone wants to spend their money, I have absolutely no issue with that, and feel that they’re free to do as they wish.

Gambling, much like TV networks, unaffiliated stores, universities, coaches, and everyone else that profits from the sport, are just taking advantage of a completely broken system, and can’t really be faulted for taking what’s given to them. The broken system, of course, is the NCAA, and their model of amateurism. It’s an exploitative and grotesque model, and the sooner it dies the better.

In 2018, Division 1 college football coaches will makes roughly $300 million in total, or around $2.5 million per coach. Athletic directors will make roughly $600,000. TV networks will make millions, if not billions on games and advertisements. Gambling will generate more money than ever with its legalization. And through all of this, the players won’t legally make a dime. Just pay the damn players already.

Last year’s edition of ‘The Game’ was Fox’s highest-rated regular season CFB game ever.

Leading into the 2018-19 season, we know what the schedule is for the Ohio State Buckeyes. But, we don’t know all the times and TV stations that will carry the games...yet.

Part of the channel mystery was solved on Monday night, as FOX was announced to have picked up ‘The Game’ for the 2018 season.

according to today's FOX Upfront, Michigan-Ohio State, Texas-Oklahoma, and Michigan-Michigan St. are all on FOX this fall. #collegefootball @mattsarz

— Chris Lezotte (@ChrisLezotte) May 14, 2018

It will be the second year in a row that Ohio State-Michigan heads to FOX—which means there’s a good chance that Gus Johnson will be on the call again.

In their run to a Cotton Bowl victory last season, the Buckeyes appeared on FOX/FS1 seven times, playing against notable teams such as Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin (in the Big Ten Championship).

For FOX, they are entering Year 3 of a six-year agreement to Big Ten football/basketball rights. According to cleveland.com, FOX is forking over roughly $240 million per year for access to 25 college football games and 50 college basketball games.

As the football broadcasting schedule gets ironed out, expect another advertisement campaign to come around, too. Last season, Wieden + Kennedy led the charge for FOX with a 16-ad campaign featuring the tagline “Every Game Is Everything”. Of those 16, 14 were team specific (one for each Big Ten program) while two were game focused (Texas-USC and Ohio State-Michigan). Michael Kelly, who plays the character Doug Stamper on Netflix’s House of Cards, did the narration for the last season’s ad campaign for Wieden + Kennedy.

The Buckeyes shift their focus to the 2020 recruiting class, sending out multiple offers to some of the country’s top prospects.

Urban Meyer has become one of the country’s top college football recruiters in the country during his tenure at Ohio State. One of the ways he has been able to achieve this elite status is his innate knack for identifying talent early in the recruitment cycle.

Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class is beginning to shape up nicely being ranked No. 9 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports.

Because of this head start, the Ohio State coaching staff is finding time to focus in on next year’s recruiting class and multiple talented recruits are catching their eyes and are earning scholarship offers to play college football in Columbus.

Ohio State offers 2019 TE

While the Ohio State coaching staff has certainly found time to look at the 2020 recruiting class, don’t think for a second that they have forgotten about this year’s crop.

Late Monday afternoon, four-star tight end Ethan Rae (Orange, CA / Orange Lutharan) took to Twitter to show off the coveted Ohio State offer.

I am speechless to have received an offer from THE Ohio State University!! #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/DlhQv2jHrP

— Ethan Rae (@Rae__Ethan) May 14, 2018

The California native receiving his scholarship, now joins teammates four-star QB Ryan Hilinski and four-star WR Kyle Ford. Of the group, Rae seems to be most likely to commit to Ohio State as Hilinski has already committed to South Carolina and Ford is trending towards USC.

Rae is one of the better TEs in this years class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 7 TE to go along with the No. 254 best overall prospect in the country.

Ohio State joins the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, USC, Oregon, Cal and UCLA competing for Rae’s commitment.

Purdue Series from Nick Swisher Field @ Bill Davis Stadium Columbus, OH

These guys ain’t no joke on sundays! Hard to believe they managed to go 7-5 over these 12 league games. This has been the best in league season of the Beals years. We usually make our hay vs the weaker teams in the league but not this year.

Purdue might have the best bullpen in the b10 and we chewed it up Sunday. That’s only the second time all year a Purdue starter left the game with the lead and Purdue didn’t win.. Hopefully the offense can continue the momentum built late in Sunday’s game because Cincinnati will be the best midweek opponent we’ve faced. Their RPI doesn’t reflect how good they’ve been.

The Cincinnati game will be streamed live by them for free at 11am. Hopefully Vance can give us a few good innings...been a struggle for him his last 3 appearances.

The Bucks are in great shape for an at large at the moment, but they aren’t a lock yet. Gotta finish
