Keith Byars, Jim Otis and Chris Ward have a chance at enshrinement.

Of the 76 possible players from the Football Bowl Subdivision to make it on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, only three of them come from Ohio State—and each one of them left a lasting legacy in Columbus.

Running back Keith Byars, fullback Jim Otis and offensive tackle Chris Ward made the national ballot, announced by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame on Monday morning. All three of these Buckeye greats passed the district screening to become eligible to be put on the national ballot. Additionally, the maximum number of representatives a school can have on the national ballot is three.

Byars was at OSU from 1982-85, and was a unanimous All-American and runner-up to Doug Flutie for the Heisman Trophy in 1984. The Dayton, Ohio, product ranks No. 8 in school rushing yards at 3,200, sixth in all-purpose yards at 4,369 and is second in touchdowns with 50. Coached by Earle Bruce, the ‘84 campaign saw Byars lead the nation in rushing yards with 1,764, as well as setting a still-standing school record of 2,441 all-purpose yards.

Otis was part of the 1968 national championship team, and, like Byars, was an All-American selection. The Celina, Ohio, native led the Woody Hayes ground attack for three seasons—and is only one of four Buckeyes to hold that honor. In the OSU record books, Otis comes in 16th for most rushing yards (2,542).

Rounding out the trio is Ward. Like Byars and Otis, the OT racked up All-American accolades, including a consensus honor in 1976, and a unanimous honor in 1977. But All-American recognition wasn’t the only thing Ward walked away with from his OSU playing days. He was named first-team All-Big Ten three times, was part of four consecutive Big Ten championship teams, and helped open holes for Archie Griffin’s Heisman campaign of 1975.

If any of these Ohio State greats gets the call to the Hall, then they’d be in good company. Twenty-five former Buckeyes are already in the HoF, with linebacker Tom Cousineau being the latest selection in 2016. OSU sits firmly in fourth place with the most members in the HoF, only trailing Notre Dame (46), USC (31) and Michigan (30).

To be considered, the criteria centers around first-team All-American recognition by an outlet that compiles consensus All-American teams (i.e. AP, Walter Camp, AFCA, FWAA and The Sporting News). On the field production isn’t the only thing considered; the post-football record on the civilian circuit also is taken into account for a potential candidate.

The announcement for who’ll be inducted in the 2019 class will come on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in Santa Clara, Calif.

The Buckeyes made the cut for a pair of standout seniors over the weekend.

Urban Meyer and crew might’ve not locked up another verbal pledge, but the Ohio State Buckeyes did have their name in the recruiting headlines.

Did you spend the weekend at The Memorial Tournament or swimming with family and friends? Don’t worry Land-Grant Holy Land will get you caught up with some of the latest Ohio State recruiting news from the last few days.

Buckeyes make the cut

Guess what? Just like many others, two more highly sought after class of 2019 prospects are still considering bringing their talents to Columbus to suit up for the Big Ten powerhouse.

Trimming their leader lists down, Ohio State still finds themself in the mix for not just Michigan linebacker Lance Dixon, but also Florida wide receiver John Dunmore.

Dixon, a standout at West Bloomfield High School, cut things from well over 20 offers down to five schools. Still in play for 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, who could also play safety on the next level, are Big Ten Conference programs Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin.

Now considering seven schools, Dunmore of Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Fla., is thinking over signing with either Ohio State, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Auburn, or Penn State.

Some recruits might list a school as a leader before having the chance to check out the campus. That’s not Dunmore, though, as he visited OSU in the spring to get more familiar with the program as a whole.

Splitting time playing quarterback and wide out last season at Delray Beach’s American Heritage, Dunmore accounted for nearly 300 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

The Buckeyes might have to put in overtime to land Dixon and Dunmore, with in-state programs looking to have the inside track for their pledges at the moment. Although they might not end up calling the 614 home, it’s a good sign for the amount of work Ohio State is putting in while out on the road recruiting.

2020 OL lands OSU offer

Always tracking down talent, Ohio State has dished out offers to a long list of solid class of 2020 prospects recently.

On Saturday another junior recruit announced he’s added a scholarship from the Buckeyes to his growing list of college opportunities.

Now with over 15 offers on the table, Ohio State joins programs such as Oklahoma, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, and USC on the hunt for four-star Columbine (CO) offensive tackle Andrew Gentry.

Blessed to say that I’ve received an offer to play football for THE Ohio State University! Thank you @CoachTonyAlford and @OSUCoachMeyer for this opportunity! pic.twitter.com/2Y1OhSnpU8

— Andrew Gentry (@a_gentry75) June 2, 2018

Picking up new interest weekly, the 6-foot-8, 290-pound roadblock is considered one of the top recruits in the 2020 class. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Gentry is pegged as the 27th offensive tackle, and 217th overall prospect in the country at the moment.

Ohio State’s class of 2020 currently sits at one, with current Buckeye offensive tackle Max Wray’s brother, Jake, as the lone commitment at the moment. Could that soon change? Stay with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Quick Hits

  • On Saturday four-star class of 2020 offensive lineman Justin Rogers once again visited the Ohio State University campus. No stranger to Columbus, Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky, and LSU are among the programs trying to keep the Oak Park, MI native out of the Scarlet and Gray.
  • While Rogers made the trek to campus over the weekend, another 2020 prospect took to his Twitter page to share with the world how much he’s excited to see what Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes are putting together for himself. Four-star defensive tackle Tre Williams, a junior standout from Washington, D.C., will be one of the dozens of prospects to flock to OSU later this summer.
  • Members of the 2018 recruiting class moved in on campus over the weekend, including running back Jaelen Gill and defensive end Tyler Friday.

The Buckeyes’ season is over after being walked off by UNC Wilmington.

In what has to qualify as the most dramatic game of the NCAA tournament thus far in 2018, Ohio State baseball was eliminated by UNC Wilmington, 4-3, in a marathon six-hour, 13-inning affair in Greenville. The game featured 24 hits, 401 pitches thrown, 24 runners left on base, three comebacks by the Seahawks, two potential game-winning runs thrown out at the plate, and one 99-minute weather delay.

Things were ultimately decided when Kep Brown delivered a bases loaded single to score Zachary Bridges. It was the eighth walk-off win for UNCW this season, which is by far the most in the country.

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAACWS) June 2, 2018

The two sides were knotted 2-2 from the fourth inning until the 11th, when Ohio State’s Noah West delivered a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to plate Dillon Dingler for the go-ahead run. That’s when things started getting a little crazy.

Senior relief ace Seth Kinker— a day after surrendering the lead and taking the loss against South Carolina— couldn’t close things out. The second-team All-American yielded a game-tying single to Mason Berne in the bottom half of the frame, and nearly gave up the walk-off win for UNCW right then and there, but was saved when Dingler threw out the potential winning-run at the plate.

There was a level of familiarity between the two clubs after they met back in March, though a lot baseball has been played since then. In those two games in Wilmington, Ohio State jumped to early leads and outscored the Seahawks 16-4 en route to picking up a pair of victories. This contest definitely did not follow that script.

Things started innocently enough. Junior Ryan Feltner took the ball at the outset for the Buckeyes in what was likely his final collegiate start. The Walsh Jesuit High School product— who is expected to be selected in the first half of the Major League Baseball draft next week— turned in a workmanlike start for his squad, tossing six innings of two-run ball.

UNCW sent freshman Gage Herring to the mound, and the right-hander struggled with his command from the get-go. Walking four and giving up a hit, Herring lasted just an inning and a third before giving way to the bullpen.

The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the top of the second, taking advantage of Herring’s command issues and using a little small ball. Dillon Dingler and Jacob Barnwell walked to open the frame, and after a Bo Coolen sacrifice bunt and Noah West walk, the bases were loaded. Dominic Canzone came through with an RBI groundout for the early 1-0 lead.

But the Seahawks bullpen has been a strength all season, and senior Austin Warren came on to snuff out the threat. The righty tossed 4.2 innings, allowing just a run on two hits, striking out four.

UNCW came back against Feltner in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game using the same small-ball strategy. A leadoff single, sacrifice bunt, and wild pitch put Kep Brown on third with one down. David Sheaffer followed with a sharp single to right to tie the game, and an infield single and a walk loaded the bases for the Seahawks with one out.

Things could have unraveled further from there, but Feltner beared down. The big righty got a strikeout and weak groundout to escape the jam. UNCW’s patient approach at the plate drove Feltner’s pitch count up, but he battled through and ended his day after 104 pitches with his club still in the ballgame.

Barnwell gave Ohio State the lead back in the top of the fourth with a wall-scraping home run down the left field line.

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAACWS) June 2, 2018

It was the second longball of the season for the junior signal caller, but the Seahawks answered right back. Putting together a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning, Ryan Jeffers delivered an RBI single to tie the game at two.

That’s how things would would stand through the 10th, with the bats on both sides going quiet. UNCW would threaten in the seventh against senior Austin Woodby, stringing together three straight singles. But a seed thrown from left field by Tyler Cowles nailed the potential go-ahead run at the plate to keep things knotted.

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAACWS) June 2, 2018

After West’s go-ahead hit and Berne’s answer in the 11th, UNCW had an opportunity to walk things off against Kinker. But Luke Gesell, a pitcher serving as a pinch runner, became the second man gunned down at the plate. It was a controversial play, with Gesell looking on replay as if he may have beaten the throw. But with no replay available to the umpires, the call stood.

Then the weather hit, and the game was sent into a lengthy delay.

When play resumed, the Seahawks finally broke the tie in the bottom of the 13th. Buckeye seniors Yianni Pavlopoulos and Kyle Michalik were unable to slow the Seahawks’ relentless offensive attack, which tallied 19 hits on the day. A pair of walks followed by a pair of singles brought the winning run across.

Ohio State closes the season with a 36-24 record, an excellent turnaround from last year. But, for the Buckeyes and their fans, the distant promise of fall ball in September is now all there is to look forward to.
