Your (almost) daily dose of good-natured, Ohio State banter.
Earlier this spring, the NHL held a Stadium Series game at Ohio Stadium between the Detroit Red Wings and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The event turned out to be a smashing success. The temperatures were perfect for outdoor hockey, the
Ohio State Marching Band performed Script Ohio on the ice, and nearly 95,000 people were in attendance, making it the second-most attended game in NHL history.
Unfortunately, the only NHL game with more fans in attendance was held at Michigan Stadium, where over 100,000 were at the NHL Winter Classic game between the Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
With the Stadium Series game in the rearview mirror, and
WrestleMania 41 Weekend now at hand, it is time to look at what could be next for events at Ohio Stadium. The famous college football stadium has hosted an English Premier League friendly, Upper Deck Golf, and the Buckeye Country Superfest annually. The university knows that it needs to branch out and hold more events aside from football games so it can bring in more money to try and make upgrades to the 100-year-old stadium. Winterizing the venue to make it feasible to hold College Football Playoff games in December, as well as other events in colder weather.
So, what do you think should be next for Ohio Stadium? Are there any events they should have their eyes on trying to bring in? As much fun as it would be to have an NHL outdoor game at Ohio Stadium every year, that’s not how the NHL operates, as they want to spread around the specialty games. Maybe there is a performer you’d love to see at The Horseshoe, or possibly an interesting event that could be held at the iconic stadium.
Today’s question: What big event do you hope Ohio Stadium hosts next?

Brett’s answer: WrestleMania
For years I was beating the drum that a Blue Jackets game should be played outdoors at Ohio Stadium. The other big event that would be perfect for the venue is
WrestleMania. Lately the attendance at WrestleMania events has been between 60,000-70,000, so if the NHL can pack nearly 95k into Ohio Stadium then they would have no problem comfortably seating wrestling fans for the event that now spans two nights. Cleveland hosted SummerSlam back in August at the
Cleveland Browns Stadium and saw over 57,000 pass through the gates.
One concern in the past about having WrestleMania at Ohio Stadium is the weather, which can be unpredictable in Columbus in late March-early April. Honestly, if Philadelphia and New York City can host WrestleMania outdoors with some of the weather they see that time of year, there is no reason Columbus couldn’t. Plus, it looks like there is a trend in the next few years that will move the event just a little later than it has been. In past years the Ohio State spring game could have made scheduling a little more difficult for a WrestleMania at Ohio Stadium, but it sounds like spring games are going out of style around college football, so a two-night WrestleMania would definitely be more profitable not only at the stadium, as well as in the Columbus area as a whole.
Unfortunately, it feels like if Ohio Stadium was going to get an outdoor WWE PLE it would be SummerSlam since the weather isn’t nearly as tough to predict in early August. As much as I love Columbus, I’m sure the WWE doesn’t see it as a marquee city for their top event. Maybe that perception changes as Columbus continues to grow as a city, it just doesn’t feel like they’ll be seen in the same light as places like Las Vegas, New Orleans, or even Indianapolis, who is in line to host a WrestleMania in the near future. I guess beggars can’t be choosers, so if a SummerSlam comes to Columbus, I’d highly enjoy it. WrestleMania would be my top target, though.
Matt’s answer: The Summer Olympics
If you have been keeping tabs on the 2028 Summer Olympics, you know that despite the fact that Los Angeles is technically the host city, cities all across Southern California will be used for various events. That’s normal and completely standard for any and all Olympics, but you know something that is a little bit unusual? Both the softball and canoe slalom events will take place over 1,300 miles away in Oklahoma City... yes, the one in actual Oklahoma.
In fairness, that is far closer to the host city than the surfing events were in the 2024 Games. Those took place 9,765 miles from Paris in the Tahiti village of Teahupo’o. If they can do that for surfing, then there’s no reason why the first-ever flag football events of the Olympic games can’t take place in the Cathedral of College Football.
Not only is Ohio Stadium one of the most grand and glorious venues in all of sports, but it carries with it the Olympic history of being the collegiate home of Jesse Owens. When you throw in the fact that Ohio State’s campus also has plenty of fields for practices and non-marquee games, it makes just as much sense to do flag football there as it does to do canoe slalom in Oklahoma!
