Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

Rohlik has really pulled this team together. In their last five games, they've taken tcun to OT, swept Minny and split with Wiscy. In the last three weekends coming up, we have #1 Sparty and the #6 Pedsters, so we'll see what happens. Unless the portal fucks us, however, I'm pretty confident about next year.

Ohio State vs. #15 Virginia, (Nashville, TN), Saturday Feb. 14, 8pm EST, FOX

It was the first game of the season they didn't start Mobley. You act like missing one of your leading scorers is no big deal, but OSU refused to put competitive NIL resources into building up this roster, so it's a huge deal.
On Mobley, yes he might have contributed or he might have scored about 3 points as he did against Pitt or Washington. He probably would have taken some of Thornton's 28 pts, so that could have been a wash. But he wouldn't have made much difference in the rebounding deficit, which was 14! They outrebounded OSU 40 - 26. If you saw the game you saw our guys lose rebounds they should have had, not be in position for rebounds, etc...

E.g., two Buckeyes under the basket, boxing out a UVA player who jumps over them and swats it to his teammate. Our guys didn't bother to jump or even raise their arms for the ball. Another one, ball is bouncing under the basket, our two guys stand there and let the UVA guy pick it up, *then* Tilly decides to do something, ties it up, possession arrow to UVA. Other plays where OSU is nowhere near in position. Buckeyes have the size to be better than 103rd in rebounding. UVA is 12th in rebounding because of good coaching and mentality (from good coaching).

It is obvious OSU does not run a well-coached offense even with Mobley. This is in contrast to their opponents that have seasoned coaches that know what they are doing. Game on the line, under a minute to go, it's Tilly for the 3. Da fuq? With Bynum and Thornton on the court? That's bad coaching. That's why we can't win these close ones.

Regardless, offense is not the main problem area with this team. They lose every game they don't score at least 72 points, that is a red flag. As bad as the offense struggled down the stretch, they were a couple bad calls and a defensive rebound off a 1-and-1 away from being ahead in the last minute.

The Jerome Schottenstein Center (Official Thread)

Been to the Schott several times during the past several years. Both men's and women's basketball. I do have a bit of trouble with spending $5.2 million on a scoreboard, that to me, does all that it's supposed to do. OK, maybe it's not the shiniest apple in the B10 stable, but hey? Who gives a rip. Doubt seriously whether any recruit has stood on the floor, looks up, and say Not going here, the scoreboard is a mess.....maybe I'm wrong. PS, cannot some of these computer whiz bangs do some reprogramming to have it show whatever one believes is missing? I demand an audit of all Athletic Department budgets/funds/cash and contracts!

Where did I mention Virginia in my comment? I even specifically said, "Watch any Buckeyes opponent run their offense." "You act like" this was the first game of the season.

SF/PF Devin Royal (transfer to Villanova)

On the last TO I said he was lazy trying to retrieve the ball. OTOH maybe I misread the situation. I'm just some guy watching on TV.
Then JJ said the exact same thing, basically saying it was inexcusable in that situation. I'm pretty sure he didn't misread what happened. Getting called out for lack of effort on national TV by a tOSU legend was strong.

3 of the 4 bench players (Cupps/Johnson/White) combined to play for 26 minutes last night.

0/0 FGs
0 rebounds
7 fouls

Yikes. When some of your starters don't have it, but you don't have depth to turn to - good luck.
It didn't help with Mobley being injured and still a close game.

2025-2026 Ohio State Men's Basketball

To anyone who watches every game (I also apologize to anyone who does this), what would you say is the identity of the team? I've watched maybe a half dozen games this year but I'm unclear as to what they can hang their hat on when their shots not falling....not good on the boards, not a lights out shooting team, not a defensive stalwart, not bully ball, not 40 minutes of hell press....

As a fan and alumnus of both OSU and UVA, and having watched several games of each team this season, OSU got fucked by the refs tonight. That simple. OSU had the lead for the vast majority of the game, and very questionable calls stopped that lead right in its tracks. Royal played poorly tonight, but having him on the court is still important (he has been great at the end of games a couple times this season after having had a poor game to that point), and especially so when the team is shorthanded. OSU failed to stop UVA's rebounding, but did do well against their other strength, shooting the 3 ball. OSU played better defense that I thought they would in this game (would have been even better defense had the refs called it evenly). Down 2 starters from the beginning of the season. OSU was the better team tonight, but when one team is allowed to play physical on D and the other is not, there is not much you can do. 32-9 free throws in favor of UVA, and once again, OSU was rolling up until several poor calls in a row went UVA's way. This is my summation as someone who loves UVA basketball.

I said this was a tough defense to go against tonight. You're ignoring reality here. UVA has the #17 defense in the country per Kenpom. You act like the Buckeyes were playing against air - that could not be farther from the truth. Virginia made it tough for OSU offensively.

I have been critical of OSU defensively- to me, this is where the Holtmann/Diebler system has fallen flat. Just a little bit better rebounding and defending without fouling, and even with all the offensive struggles down the stretch, OSU wins that game.

I don't think the "Diebler offensive system" is that great either. It's not bad statistically but there are way too many sustained sequences of ugly where guys just seem to do whatever they want.

Watch any Buckeyes opponent run their offense. It looks like they have a plan, quick and crisp passing, etc.. all the things well-coached teams do. Then watch our Buckeyes on offense. None of that. Never decisive, effective passing, never looking like there's a play or a plan. Maybe Bynum will go one-on-one and get to the hoop or shoot a 3. Maybe they'll let Bruce dribble to his spot for the 100th time. Or, here's a good one - get the ball to Tilly beyond the 3-pt arc, have him take a shot there with under a minute to go, one-possession game, after a time-out. That was my favorite for this game. Sheer, unadulterated brilliance!1

Other teams run an offense. Ohio State is usually just 5 guys doing whatever. Which is on the coaching 100%
