SEC Football Media Days

What effects will changes to college football have this year?

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s Power Two Podcast. On this show, we talk about Big Ten and SEC football… and everyone else. This show is for the die-hard fans and the casual college football fans. After every week of action, we will catch you up on all the major matchups of the previous weekend and look ahead at the games, storylines, and players you should be paying attention to for the next week.

My name is Jordan Williams, and I am joined by my co-host DaNaysia Jones. Lock in as we do a power sweep through the college football landscape.

In recent years, college football has witnessed major shifts in conference alignments. Schools are seeking more financial opportunities and competitive advantages, and the fallout from the implosion of the PAC-12 has major implications. The competition value is ever-increasing, but how do college football fans really feel about these changes?

Jordan and DJ discuss their thoughts on the realignment, and the conferences to watch this upcoming season. Jordan also offers his opinions on new media rights deals for the B1G and SEC.

The College Football Playoff system is set to expand to 12 teams. This expansion addresses long-standing criticisms about the limited access to the playoff for teams outside the Power Four conferences. It promises to create more opportunities for underdog stories and to enhance the overall competitiveness of the playoff. Who doesn’t want more college football?

The changes to the transfer portal brought forth by an NCAA lawsuit have created a more dynamic and fluid player market, allowing teams to quickly address roster needs and for players to find better opportunities. But what are the educational implications and concerns for athletes who may take advantage of this? Should there be limitations in place, or will the market reset itself?

Ohio State Coach Earle Bruce

A memorable moment in the history of The Game happened when a very mid 1987 Buckeyes team rallied to give Earle Bruce an emotional sendoff to his OSU career. | SetNumber: X35801 TK1 R14 F20

Let’s take a look at where the disdain begins for Ohio State fans when it comes to that blue and yellow team one state away.

From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about Ohio State’s rivals. Michigan is the defending national champions, but there has been a lot of change in Ann Arbor. What does that mean for the season, the Big Ten, and the Buckeyes? You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our ”That Team Up North” articles here.

As Ohio State fans, we know pretty early that we’re not supposed to like Michigan. At all. And yes, that’s how I feel about it. In my childhood, I would adamantly tell anyone who would listen that if Ohio State only won one game per season, it would be a success — as long as that win came against the Wolverines.

Where did my hatred (‘disdain’ doesn’t feel strong enough, while ‘loathing’ might be a bit melodramatic. ’Hatred’ seems to be the correct word) for Michigan start? For me, it probably started early in my childhood. I was watching Ohio State on television during the Ten-Year War between Woody Hayes’ Buckeyes and Bo Schembechler’s Wolverines, but in the later stages of that era.

My earliest Ohio State memories are of Hayes winning the battle against Bo, so my earliest remembrances are likely from 1974 or 1975, when I would have been an 8-year-old or 9-year-old, depending on which year was my first. The memory isn’t crisp enough to lock into a single year, but I do remember Archie Griffin and Pete Johnson (who were on both teams), celebrating a win over Michigan, and talking about it at school with my friends.

But then the Wolverines won three in a row and Woody was out. It was the Clemson game that ultimately did Hayes in, but I felt at the time like losing to Michigan like that could have simply been too much for him. I recall seeing him interviewed many times, and it was almost politician-like how his own animosity toward the Wolverines was almost always mentioned. That likely planted the seeds for me.

The rivalry, for me, grew to new heights after Earle Bruce took over as head coach at Ohio State. The Buckeyes and Wolverines split their games during the Bruce-Schembechler era, with both teams ruining the other’s season on multiple occasions. I attended my first iterations of The Game during that era, including Bruce’s final game in charge, when the Buckeyes — at the end of a subpar season that ended Earle’s tenure in Columbus — rallied on the road to beat the Wolverines (who were also not great that year) in their stadium.

If that didn’t already cement my hatred of Michigan (it did), the torturous John Cooper era did. Cooper’s teams often had promising teams that never reached their full potential because he couldn’t beat That Team Up North. This is the era that no doubt created the abhorrence that many Buckeye fans currently in their mid-to-late 40s feel to this day.

Cooper began his OSU career with five osses and a tie against Michigan in his first six seasons. The irony is that he became a candidate largely because his Arizona State team beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State fans liked coaches who beat the Wolverines and won Rose Bowls.

Cooper eventually beat Michigan, but he only did it twice in his final seven tries. Despite many great teams and standout players, his legacy as Ohio State’s head coach is forever linked to his futility against the Wolverines.

But then the good times started. Jim Tressel coached Ohio State from 2001 to 2010 and beat That Team Up North nine times out of the 10 meetings. Sure, the NCAA vacated his last one — a 37-7 drubbing of the Wolverines in Columbus, because a few of the players on the team sold some of their personal belongings they got from the football program and used the money to buy tattoos.

They got caught, and Tressel was busted for lying to the NCAA about it to protect his players. Today, NIL would have prevented the entire thing. But they can’t take the win from our memories or our hearts.

Ohio State fans who grew up rooting for Tressel’s Buckeyes likely had only their parents’ stories and the highlights packages on TV to fuel their Michigan hatred. After all, the Wolverines weren’t exactly spoiling Ohio State’s path to glory. The team won a national championship and played for two others under Tressel.

After a weird, lame duck 2011 season under interim coach Luke Fickell produced Ohio State’s first loss to Michigan since 2003 (and might not have happened had a freshman named Braxton Miller not overthrown a wide-open DeVier Posey late in the game), the good times started right back up again.

Urban Meyer won all seven times he faced Michigan as Ohio State’s coach, and only a few of those were even close. In Meyer’s last season, a 20-year-old OSU football fan would have seen only one loss to Michigan since they were five years old.

How do you build up a healthy hatred for Michigan when they never spoil your season? Again, it had to be passed down from earlier generations. If you hate Michigan and you grew up in that era, please let me know in the comments below if you dislike the Wolverines for any other reason than your upbringing.

Ryan Day succeeded Meyer and easily won his first iteration of The Game. Things hadn’t seemed to change.

But then they did.

The Wolverines have won the last three, and it seemed as if Ohio State imploded in all of them. Only now, after two decades of nearly constant success, are modern OSU fans learning what it feels like when The Game derails a promising season. Beating Michigan was never a birthright. It was fun, sure. It was awesome, in fact. But it was never meant to last forever, as much as us oldtimers wanted it to.

For you younger Ohio State fans, was there a particular moment or game that made you hate Michigan? Do you hate Michigan at all? Where would you rate that hatred on a 1-10 scale?

Here’s hoping Day can turn things back in the right direction in 2024.

The Ohio State alumni team defeated Purple Hearts 93-58 in the first round behind a dominant second quarter

The No. 3 seeded Carmen’s Crew, the Ohio State alumni team, won its first game of the tournament this year, taking down the No. 6-seeded Purple Hearts 93-58

The Purple Hearts got off to a hot start, taking a 19-18 lead into the second quarter. From there, it was all Carmen’s Crew.

The Ohio State alumni team outscored Purple Hearts 27-4 in the second quarter and 26-18 in the third quarter to run away with the first-round win.

The Wesson brothers, Andre and Kaleb, led the way for Carmen’s Crew with 12 points each, while Desonta Bradford and Jamel Morris recorded 11 points each. Morris added five rebounds and four assists. Kaleb Wesson added seven rebounds and three assists.

12 players scored for Carmen’s Crew, including 43-year-old Jeff Gibbs, who drilled the game-winning three to hit the target score. Jared Sullinger made his long-awaited return to the court, recording nine points and six rebounds in 15 minutes.

Keyshawn Woods recorded eight points and Kyle Young recorded seven points.

The team shot 30-for-64 (46.9%) from the field and 10-for-29 (34.5%) from the three-point line. They were also 23-for-28 (82.1%) from the free-throw line.

Darius Adams led the way for Purple Hearts with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists. D’Vauntes Smith recorded nine points, and Davon Haynes recorded eight points.

Now, Carmen’s Crew will move on to face the Dayton alumni team and host school for the Dayton Regional, Red Scare.

The No. 2 seeded Red Scare defeated the No. 7 seeded DaGuys STL 88-74 to advance to the second round.

Wes Clark, who won the 2022 TBT championship with Blue Collar U, recorded 16 points, along with Ryan Mikesell, to lead Red Scare. Mikesell added seven points, while Clark added five rebounds and six assists.

Darrell Davis recorded 13 points, and Scoochie Smith added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Marcus Santos-Silva added 14 points, and Cleveland Melvin added nine points off the bench.

This is the seventh appearance by Carmen’s Crew in The Basketball Tournament, and they won the championship and one million dollar prize in 2019.

Purdue v Oregon

Your (almost) daily dose of good-natured, Ohio State banter.

From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about
Ohio State’s opponents. From looking at the Big Ten Conference to individual opponents to specific players, we will bring it all to you. You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our ”Behind Enemy Lines” articles here.

Everybody knows that one of the best parts of being a sports fan is debating and dissecting the most (and least) important questions in the sporting world with your friends. So, we’re bringing that to the pages of LGHL with our favorite head-to-head column: You’re Nuts.

In You’re Nuts, two LGHL staff members will take differing sides of one question and argue their opinions passionately. Then, in the end, it’s up to you to determine who’s right and who’s nuts.

Today’s Question: Other than Ohio State, what Big Ten team won the transfer portal?

Jami’s Take: Purdue

Heading into Ryan Walters’ second season at the helm of Purdue, the Boilermakers needed to drastically make up some ground in terms of depth, coming off their disappointing 4-8 2023 season.

Walters faced an uphill battle, tasked with essentially rebuilding from the ground up.

We won’t know for certain until we start to see some football, but on paper, it seems he rose to the challenge. While it’s unlikely they’ll be playoff contenders this season, when we look at who used the transfer portal most effectively to plug major holes and level up their talent heading into the fall, the Boilermakers have to be part of the conversation.

With the addition of a trio of four-star recruits from Georgia in cornerback Nyland Green and wide receivers De’Nylon Morrissette and C.J. Smith, Purdue managed to add some star power to their arsenal.

Green in particular stands to be a huge playmaker for the Boilermakers. He’s the highest-ranked transfer the Boilermakers added to their roster this year and was the highest-ranked cornerback in the portal. While he never really became a star player at Georgia, he’ll likely be a huge defensive contributor for Purdue this fall, thanks to speed and stride that allow him to keep up with opposing wide receivers. His addition is particularly threatening given Walters’ success with coaching defensive backs.

Green is joined in the secondary by Kyndrich Breedlove out of Colorado, along with a pair of linebackers and a pair of defensive linemen.

Walters’ vision for the defense seems poised to take shape with some of these additions, as they add much-needed depth to the defensive side of the ball.

Even still, the offense is where most of the magic happened. At wide receiver, Morrissette and Smith are joined by Kam Brown (formerly of UCLA), rounding out the Boilermakers’ high-profile receiver additions in his final year of eligibility.

Running back Reggie Love III will replace his Illini Blue and Orange with Black and Gold. Boasting over 1000 rushing yards in his time at Illinois, Love III joins sophomore Devin Mockobee to give the Boilermakers a little more flexibility to run the ball.

Additionally, Purdue netted four offensive linemen from the portal who should bring a marked improvement in the position group.

Among many major concerns for Purdue in 2023 was the lack of protection for starting quarterback Hudson Card. The Boilermakers should see a marked improvement in this area in 2024, with the addition of four desperately needed offensive linemen, including Joey Tanona from Notre Dame.

Though the Boilermakers’ wide receiver Deion Burks departed via the portal himself, heading to Oklahoma, the offense made enough net gains that they should be able to hold their own, especially with Card returning at QB this season.

Do the portal additions make Purdue an Ohio State, Michigan, or Oregon-level team? No, of course not. But you can expect to see noticeable improvements on both sides of the ball compared to last season, something Walters desperately needs.

Purdue has a tough schedule—they’ll face Notre Dame in Week 2, with mid-season games against Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State. I don’t expect they’ll win any of those four marquee matchups (though you never know with Purdue—they are sometimes called the Spoilermakers for their ability to surprise teams that are caught looking ahead).

Sure, teams like Oregon added a lot of flash to their roster—but they were already a great team. The margin of growth from “great to a little bit greater” is smaller than what I think we’ll see at Purdue year-over-year. After a dismal 2023, eight wins are not out of the realm of possibility.

Eight wins this year could then set them up for other big transfer or recruiting gains in the future. This transfer class could be the key to Walters getting the chance to prove he can turn things around, and for that, it’s the strongest use of the portal by any of the Buckeyes’ opponents this year.

Matt’s Take: Oregon

Like with yesterday’s article, I really wanted to go outside of the box. I wanted to have the same type of guts that Jami had by picking... Purdue?!?!?! But, if you’re asking me what Big Ten team other than the Buckeyes won in the transfer portal this offseason, it’s tough to look much further than the Oregon Ducks.

There is the obvious, big-name addition of quarterback Dillon Gabriel, but according to 247Sports, he was only the team’s fifth-ranked transfer pickup behind Texas A&M wide receiver Evan Stewart, UCLA quarterback Dante Moore, Washington cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, and Houston defensive lineman Jamaree Caldwell.

Overall, the Ducks had the second-rated 2024 transfer portal class in total points behind Ole Miss. In terms of average player rating, they were fourth with an average of 90.46; the Buckeyes were No. 1 at 92.86, but the Scarlet and Gray only added seven players to Oregon’s 14. Ohio State had three of the top 10 ranked transfer additions this season, while Oregon had two.

It also helps that in terms of players leaving Eugene, only two were ranked in the 90s; running back Dante Dowdell and Cole Martin — who ended up at Nebraska and Arizona State respectively — were both rated exactly at 90. So in terms of players coming in and going out, head coach Dan Lanning (and Phil Knight’s endlessly deep NIL pockets).

Lanning and the Nike co-founder are building an impressive roster in the Pacific Northwest, and that has certainly impacted the recruiting and transfer objectives of Ohio State. I think a lot of folks around Buckeye Nation would have loved for Gabriel to be in Columbus instead of Eugene.

But that success makes for an increasingly compelling rivalry between these two now conference foes.
