Jake Diebler continues to add to his staff of assistant coaches.

Ohio State announced the hiring of Baylor director of basketball operations Luke Simons as an assistant coach on Thursday.

“I’m excited to welcome Luke as he’s going to be a great addition to our staff,” Diebler said in a statement. “He has the ability to connect with players at every level and his versatility is really important. He’s been on staff at the collegiate level, and he has international coaching experience as well. Those experiences are going to be valuable for our program as we move forward.”

Simons joins Joel Justus, Jamall Walker and Dave Dickerson on what will be a brand new staff of assistant coaches for the 2024-25 season. Ohio State can still add one more assistant coach.

Simons and Diebler worked together at Vanderbilt for three seasons, where both helped head coach Bryce Drew to a 19-16 overall record and an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2017.

Megan Husslein

He was very entertaining at his first press conference.

Carlos Locklyn knocked it out of the park during his first press conference as Ohio State’s new running backs coach. Between his jokes and his mindset when it comes to the team, I have a feeling that Buckeye Nation is going to love him.

To start off the presser, when asked how excited he was to be in Columbus, Locklyn said he has to, “pinch himself every morning,” for how excited he is to be with the Buckeyes. He also mentioned that when Ryan Day first reached out to him via text, he felt like, “A kid on Christmas morning.”

It sounds like Locklyn was thrilled to be in the conversation to replace Tony Alford. However, it obviously is not easy to be the RB coach for Ohio State. Yes, there is a ton of talent, especially with the duo of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, but how do you manage their workloads in order to get the most out of them without overdoing it?

“This ain’t my first rodeo,” Locklyn said.

When he was on staff at Memphis, they had Darrell Henderson (who played for the Rams this past season), Patrick Taylor (49ers), Tony Pollard (Titans), Kenny Gainwell (Eagles), and Antonio Gibson (Patriots). That is an absolutely LOADED RB roster. While Locklyn wasn’t the official running back’s coach at Memphis, he played a large role in shaping these players.

Locklyn seemed confident that he knew how to make all of these players function as one group, and the same thing would happen at Ohio State. He also recruited both Judkins and Henderson previously, so he has already established relationships with them.

Speaking of relationships, that is something that Locklyn prides himself on.

New RB coach Carlos Locklyn just finished Jim Tressel's book, The Winner's Manual.

One of his man takeaways was he has a purpose and goals. That purpose? To serve and pour into his players.

"Carlos Locklyn is not a recruiter. I'm an elite relationship builder." pic.twitter.com/5PvGfXWMuq

— Lantern Sports (@LanternSports) April 10, 2024

Locklyn said that being a RB coach is, “the worst coaching position in football.” He said that anyone will be hired as long as they can recruit. His statement that “Carlos Locklyn is not a recruiter. I’m an elite relationship builder,” is a mic drop in itself. You can tell his main focus is doing whatever is best for his players.

He was also asked about his career in law enforcement and the impact that has had on him as a football coach. Locklyn worked as a police officer before he made the career change. He pretty much said that since he did that, being a football coach is easy. He responded to domestic violence calls, traffic stops, etc., and that football is simple compared to all of that.

Carlos Locklyn worked in law enforcement before coaching football.

He can handle the Buckeye RBs.

"When I got my own [RB] room... I was asked how I would handle them. I said 'I had the power over 51 inmates, you talk to me having six or seven guys, are you kidding me?'" pic.twitter.com/AOMVGnUlwf

— Lantern Sports (@LanternSports) April 10, 2024

He said he made the switch to football because he could reach more people. He said that he did enjoy his career in law enforcement, but ultimately he felt like, through his faith, he was being led to a change that could help young men and their futures.

So, what did Day see in him that made him make the hire? Locklyn’s mentality had to play a major factor in it.

“I got one mindset when I step in this building. That’s to do my job so well that the living, dead, and unborn couldn’t do it any better,” Locklyn said.

Is anyone else ready to run through a brick wall for this guy?

There are a number of Ohio State/Columbus/Ohio personalities that would add some bold flavors to the event

Earlier this week it was announced that Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss would welcome competitive eating champion Joey Chestnut to Oxford for the festivities Ole Miss has planned to close out their spring practices. Not only will the Rebels play seven-on-seven football and hold skills competitions similar to what is seen at the NFL Pro Bowl, they will also hold a hot dog eating contest.

Since Kiffin doesn’t see a ton of value in the spring game, he is doing a great job at having some fun with the event while still keeping fans excited.

Hot Dog Eating Champion Joey Chestnut to Attend Ole Miss Rebels 'Grove Bowl Games' https://t.co/EcrcCbrDHo

— Lane Kiffin (@Lane_Kiffin) April 9, 2024

Honestly, I’m not a fan of the spring game. The only thing I find useful about Ohio State’s annual spring game is it gives families a cheaper option at getting down to Ohio Stadium to see the Buckeyes than they’ll have in the regular season. At least this year it looks like the weather will cooperate, as Saturday’s forecast is calling for sun and a high in the lower 60s, so that might sway fans that are on the fence about attending the annual event to head to the stadium to watch the Buckeyes.

Since I don’t care all that much about the spring game, I tried to think of some ways to make the event a little more entertaining with some Ohio flair. What I tried to do was think of some notable people Ryan Day could try and bring in with ties to Ohio State, Columbus, or even just Ohio. I feel like these options would make more sense than Joey Chestnut going to Ole Miss, since he was born in Kentucky and his alma mater is San Jose State.

Master of ceremonies: Guy Fieri

The mayor of Flavortown owes Columbus after the Flavortown Fest that was scheduled for early June in Columbus was cancelled. Obviously Fieri has plenty of experience hosting shows, so running the spring game would be something he could do in his sleep. Plus, Fieri could plug his new restaurant that is supposed to open at Scioto Downs sometime this spring.

Just imagine Fieri interviewing Ryan Day after the game. In my damaged brain I’m just imagining Day playing to Fieri and yelling “I WANT TO KNOW WHERE BOBBY FLAY IS RIGHT NOW??” Maybe we can even get Fieri to go hard in the paint with some bold flavors and spice up Ryan Day’s beard with some blond. If you are going to bring in Fieri, you really have to lean into getting wild.

Raising Cane’s chicken eating contest

Since Ole Miss is going to have a hot dog eating contest, Ohio State has to have their own competition of gluttony. Skyline and White Castle can be way too dangerous for digestive systems, so we have to go with a favorite around campus. I’m sure Mickey Marotti might not be thrilled with his players straying from his strength and conditioning program by slamming a bunch of fried chicken, but the players should be rewarded for all the hard work they’ve done in the weight room the last few months.

With this event there’s a way to add some of what we love from the Duke’s Mayo Bowl into the spring game. What if the winner of this eating contest was doused in Cane’s sauce? Or if for some reason the winner didn’t want to have the delicious sauce poured on them, they could choose a coach to take their place.

Something like this wouldn’t have to be limited to just players. How about if someone donated a certain amount to Ohio State’s NIL fund, they could compete against the players? Then again, there might not be enough Cane’s chicken to supply a contest like this if you get the fans involved.

The “Macho Man” Randy Savage Memorial Battle Royal

Since we are just a few days removed from WrestleMania, we might as well add in some wrestling elements to the spring game. Ohio State does have someone with professional wrestling in their blood on the staff: James Laurinaitis’ dad was a member of one of the most famous tag teams in the history of wrestling. If anyone could book a successful battle royal, it is the linebackers coach of the Buckeyes.

Much like is seen during NFL training camps, spending so much time practicing against teammates leads to tensions being raised at points. This seems like a fun way for players to blow off some steam. I’m completely aware any type of wrestling match wouldn’t fly though because of the injury risk, just work with me here since I’m trying to have some fun with some hypothetical events.

Postgame concert by The Black Keys

A lot of people will probably want Twenty One Pilots in this spot, but The Black Keys are a much better option, especially since they have a new album coming out titled, “The Ohio Players”. I’m biased since I’ve seen the duo from Akron a number of times in concert, but those shows have been at Nationwide Arena and The Schott.

Give me TBK at Ohio Stadium, where they would undoubtedly be the best musical act the stadium has seen in a number of years.

2024 iHeartRadio ALTer EGO - Show

Since halftime is reserved for TBDBITL, it makes sense to do this after the game. It would be great if the band and TBK could collaborate on some songs, much like Metallica did with San Francisco’s symphony. How about adding a little guitar to Carmen, Ohio? Purists would hate it, which would make me love it even more.

Just don’t let Day and the coaching staff choose any halftime musical entertainment, since we have seen on social media they are fans of a bunch of terrible country artists like Morgan Wallen.

Richard Lewis tribute

If there is one spring game event that I’ve proposed that should actually happen, it is a tribute to Richard Lewis. The legendary comedian who graduated from Ohio State in 1969 passed away in late February at the age of 76. While there have been recognitions of Lewis as a Buckeye following his passing, it would be great to see a big tribute to one of the funniest people the world has ever seen.

Celebrities At The Los Angeles Lakers Game

Then again, this might not fly in a setting with a bunch of children since they might be tempted to go and look up some of the work Lewis has done, and then parents will have to explain the content. Still, Lewis deserves to be shown love for being a great Ohio State alum.

Dakorien_Moore.0.png

Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports

While Dakorien Moore is currently committed to LSU, hopefully Brian Hartline will be able to do what Brian Hartline does.

The philosophy around Ohio State recruiting has always been that if the Buckeye coaching staff can get a guy on campus, they feel like they have a really good shot of landing him. That is likely even more true when the position coaching recruiting the prospect also happens to be the best in the business, with a track record of turning high-profile prospects into surefire NFL stars.

Brian Hartline and the OSU staff are hoping that this proves to be true when they welcome the No. 1 wide receiver in the country to Columbus over the weekend for the Spring Game. Dakorien Moore has been an LSU commit since last August but will be coming to Ohio from Duncanville, Texas this weekend to see the Buckeyes in person. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, he is the No. 2 player in the 2025 recruiting class and has over 30 offers from all of the biggest schools in the country. Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing in at 175 pounds, Moore is a strong track athlete as well, and his speed shows on the field.

Of course, Hartline landed the No. 1 WR in the 2024 class in Jeremiah Smith and the true freshman and early enrollee has already been making an impact in his first spring with the team. So, Moore being in The Horseshoe to see how he is being utilized and coached will be a big deal for the Buckeyes.

Moore was also in Columbus last month, and according to Bucknuts’ Bill Kurelic is still considering Ohio State and three other schools in addition to LSU. Moore’s mother will be with him on this trip and told Bucknuts, “He enjoyed his last visit so much I have to see what he sees.”

247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks notes that Moore reminds him of Chris Olave. The former Buckeye has had a pretty good start to his pro career, so why not just follow in his footsteps and play for Hartline?

PGA: Masters Tournament - Practice Round

Adam Cairns-USA TODAY Sports

The graduate senior earned his spot in the Master’s Tournament field with his runner-up finish in the U.S. Amateur last summer

Thanks to a runner-up finish in the 2023 U.S. Amateur Championship, Ohio State graduate student Neal Shipley is playing in the 88th Masters Tournament this week at Augusta National Golf Club.

The Masters is one of golf's four major championships, and it takes place annually at Augusta National.

Shipley is paired with the 2003 Masters champion and the only Canadian to win a major championship, Mike Weir and Ryo Hisatsune.

The group will tee off on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET and Friday at 8:24 a.m. ET. He is one of five amateurs to play this week, joining Santiago De La Fuente, Christo Lamprecht, Stewart Hagestad, and Jasper Stubbs.

— The Masters (@TheMasters) April 9, 2024

It was an impressive run to the final match by Shipley at the 123rd U.S. Amateur to earn his tee time at Augusta. Shipley finished 1-under through the 36-hole stroke play portion and tied for 38th place. He was the No. 47 seed.

He defeated the 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion, Wenyi Ding. He then defeated Calum Scott of Scotland in 20 holes in the Round of 32.

Shipley beat Cooper Jones in the Round of 16 and Andi Xu in the Quarterfinals. He defeated John Marshall Butler 2 and 1 in the Semifinals to meet up with Dunlap in the 36-hole championship match.

However, even though they were tied after the first 18 holes, Dunlap won four of the next nine holes and pulled away from Shipley for good.

“You shoot 5-under [in the morning round], and you would think you’d be at least 1 or 2 up,” Shipley told the USGA after the final match. “Nick (Dunlap) played great, and he just made a lot of putts on me this afternoon. That’s what it takes to win these things. He has what it takes, obviously, and I just didn’t really play my best. I got outdueled today.”

This weekend is shaping up to be a massive recruiting opportunity for the Buckeyes

The biggest football recruiting news this week has been the visit plans of five-star 2025 receiver target Dakorien Moore, who is set to be in Columbus this weekend for the Ohio State spring game. A major win for Hartline and the rest of the staff, it’s a big step in the right direction if the Buckeyes have a real chance at flipping him away from his current LSU pledge.

At any rate, while this visit by Moore takes most of the attention right now, Ohio State is set to host another top receiver in his own respective class thanks to current commit, Chris Henry Jr. The No. 2 player nationally and top receiver in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, Henry has been committed to the Buckeyes since July of last year, but getting him back to his future home is always a welcomed affair.

With him being in California now at Mater Dei, it’s that much easier for other programs to try and swoop in and interfere with his Ohio State ties and commitment, but return trips to see the Buckeyes further prove how locked in he is. It’s going to be a continued theme for schools trying to stay engaged in recruiting him, but Henry is saying and doing all of the right things to ease any worries fans may have.

Knowing other Mater Dei guys the Buckeyes are all in on, such as Jordon Davison, Henry’s commitment brings a comfortability with Ohio State in helping to solidify Mater Dei as a recruiting ground. Henry will be welcomed back this weekend with arms wide open, and likely will do a little bit of peer recruiting of his own as they continue building these 2025 and 2026 classes.

Buckeyes host four-star running back prospect

With recruits from all over the country set to be on hand for the Spring Game, Ryan Day and his crew have quite the atmosphere building for this weekend. It’s no guarantee, but with how the current recruiting class has been building, a commitment very well could pop during or following the festivities.

While we wait a couple of more days for the game to get here for a closer look at this roster, the staff is staying busy doing what they always do — which is more recruiting.

Making the trek from Florida, Ohio State was able to host four-star running back Byron Louis on Wednesday. The No. 203 player nationally and 15th-best running back per the 247Sports Composite, Louis checking in to see the Buckeyes keeps Ohio State on his radar and vice versa, as this staff has several elite players they are after at his position in the 2025 cycle.

Newly named position coach Carlos Locklyn has already dished out offers of his own to players, but certain guys at the spot continue to be atop of the leader board as the main priorities. Still, with an ever-changing realm as recruiting is, the Buckeyes are wise to entertain and recruit several top running backs knowing recruitments can change in the blink of an eye.

Ohio State will welcome more players later this weekend at the running back position, but the process to land at least two is well in place, and has been for some time.

Additional names on the guest list

The Buckeyes continue to see more top players share their visit plans to see Ohio State this weekend. Here’s just a few more of the guys the staff will have on-hand to take in what is shaping up to be a massive weekend...

  • Dorian Barney — A 6-foot-1, 170 pound 2026 cornerback, Barney is the No. 32 player nationally and the third-best corner in the class per the 247Sports Composite. Position coach Tim Walton has dominated the cornerback recruiting as of late, so surely this weekend’s visit will be a solid one for Barney as Walton continues his pursuit of top players in both the current and future cycles.

Quick Hits

  • In case you missed it, Ohio State and Jake Diebler landed their first 2026 commitment on Wednesday thanks to in-state product Marcus Johnson. The No. 24 player nationally and the fourth best point-guard in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, Johnson chooses the Buckeyes over nearly 20 other offers to his name. He is also the cousin of Ohio State transfer portal returnee, Meechie Johnson.

A 6-foot-1, 175 pound athlete, Johnson being the first member of the class and the first commitment in the Diebler era shows this new staff has exactly what it takes to recruit well and keep their best Ohio products at home for their college careers. A great start for the Buckeyes in 2026, look for Johnson to be a big part of why this cycle is a successful one for Ohio State.

Promoting from within and letting half the roster walk shows a lack of commitment.

This week, news broke that John Calipari is/was finalizing a deal to leave his post at Blueblood Kentucky for the chicken-fueled juggernaut that is Arkansas basketball. The news caught many off guard, as Coach Cal recently received a vote of confidence from Kentucky’s athletic director, despite the team’s embarrassing tournament loss to Oakland and 30-year-old private shooting coach Jack Gohlke.

But according to several insiders, Calipari’s shocking move may have been months in the making. There were rumors that the Hall of Fame coach had grown unhappy in Lexington, prompting him (or his agent, wink wink) to search for an escape route. And per CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, said escape route may have led to Columbus, Ohio if not for... poor timing?

John Calipari leaving Kentucky has been on the table going back to February, sources tells CBS Sports.

He privately expressed significant/serious interest in the Ohio State job but the timing wasn’t right, per source. Arkansas coming available was a dream shot out of Lexington.

— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander) April 8, 2024

Sunday night — as we were all coming down from our WrestleMania high — Norlander tweeted out that Calipari had expressed “significant/serious interest” in the Ohio State job; a job that eventually went to Jake Diebler. But apparently, the timing wasn’t right for a serious Cal conversation, whatever that means. My guess is that “timing” translates to money and fear of upsetting the proverbial apple cart which potentially costing OSU a shot at landing a HOF coach with 800+ wins and a national championship.

Now, does Calipari come with some baggage? Sure. But when was the last time a truly legendary coach expressed interest in coaching the basketball Buckeyes? Has it ever happened? Who cares if he wants $8-9 million per year and influence over NIL allocations? Is Ohio State (admin/boosters/donors/etc.) serious about men’s basketball or not?

The school’s apparent refusal to seriously engage with Calipari implies that they are not. Their inability to land (pay for) big-time transfers also implies that they are not. Even their indifference toward creating a good (give me above average!) gameday environment tells me that OSU’s decision-makers are not serious people when it comes to improving the state of men’s basketball affairs.

**To be clear, I am primarily talking about Ohio State men’s basketball. The women’s team garners plenty of interest and excitement, so I don’t know how much help they need. But since we’re on the subject, Kevin McGuff’s team would also benefit from an improved gameday environment and some NIL cash to throw around in the transfer portal, and they deserve it.

Promoting from within and potentially turning down both Calipari and Dusty May implies an internal desire to be good, not great. Now look, I like Diebler, so I don’t love saying this. But if Ryan Day were to ultimately fail as OSU’s head football coach, there is absolutely no chance in hell that somebody like Brian Hartline is getting promoted before/without an exhaustive search process. The latter seems like a good-to-great candidate to potentially succeed Day, but you’re crazy if you think he’s getting the job before Ross Bjork (and an entire Scarlet and Gray tribunal) calls every active coach with a championship ring.

Gene Smith essentially handed Day the job when Urban Meyer “retired”/was forced out, and that decision has come with significant highs and lows, it’s doubtful that the new AD would want to blindly go down that road again.

Now say I’m wrong, and that money was not a prohibitive factor (even though it definitely was). Why did Ohio State ultimately choose Chris Holtmann’s former assistant to be his successor, even though said successor is/was largely responsible for the players on the underperforming roster?

Again, I like Diebler, but he shoulders some of the blame for how things went.

One of the main selling points of the move was roster retention. Since Diebler recruited most of these guys, conventional wisdom led OSU to believe that he could and would convince most of them to continue their careers in Columbus. About that...

Thus far, four presumably former Buckeyes have entered the transfer portal: Roddy Gayle, Zed Key, Scotty Middleton, and Bowen Hardman, all of whom have/had Jake Diebler listed as their primary recruiter. So how’s that whole retention thing going?

But perhaps Diebler is not to blame for the mass exodus. Perhaps it comes down to money, which (as we’ve established) Ohio State has been hesitant to throw around. See: Head Coach.

OSU has also shown little interest in spending big on players/transfers, which brings me to my other point. If the program is serious about being great — or even getting better — then it needs to show a monetary commitment to roster construction. Kind of like, I dunno, the football program did. Maybe not the same commitment, but a commitment nonetheless.

Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK
Is there a basketball version of Caleb Downs out there?

In recent years, when Ohio State has utilized the transfer portal, it has not exactly gone big-game hunting. No offense to the Andrew Dakiches, Jamari Wheelers, and Evan Mahaffeys of the world, but bringing in role players from inferior Big Ten programs isn’t what I would call a power move.

One might be tempted to throw the Jamison Battle addition in my face as evidence to the contrary, but remember that he was coming off a bad season at Minnesota. Also as he played for the Buckeyes, they likely plucked him off the clearance rack. The same goes for Cedric Russell and/or Tanner Holden, both of whom were big-time scoring additions for OSU but from lower-level programs. And then Holtmann had no idea how to use them, so... yeah.

The point I am trying to make is that if Ohio State wants to become relevant again in the world of men’s basketball, they need to spend in the portal; something I’m not sure they are willing to do. I’m not suggesting they go out and invest tens of millions in an entirely new roster, but at least make the effort to reel in a top-5 or top-10 transfer. Go get French phenom Maxime Raynaud, formerly of Stanford. Or make Brandon Garrison, formerly of Oklahoma State, say no.

Or — and I can’t believe I’m saying this — break the bank for Bronny James! This would sort of go against some of my previous complaints/arguments, but at least it would show a willingness to swing for the fences.
