The Buckeyes see their name still in it for three elite 2025 hoops stars.

It’s here! Today begins the start of Ohio State’s fall camp, and that means football is officially back. An offseason that has been rather uneventful for the Buckeyes, this is a team that is poised to make a run for it all, but that pursuit is now finally underway as Ryan Day and company take the field.

A summer that was focused on recruiting, the current roster is the main priority from now on, even with some work to be done in the 2025 class. Sitting atop of the rankings thanks to a group of 24 commits, there’s not a ton of work to be done to round out this stellar haul of talent. There is arguably the biggest member of the class still out there thanks to David Sanders Jr., but only a few players are still being pursued down the stretch.

The coaching staff has plenty to keep them busy as the first contest of the year quickly approaches, but even with fall camp now here, you can guarantee that Ohio State is putting the effort in on the trail to finish off this 2025 class. Looking to land somewhere between 26-28 commitments when all is said and done, expect the Buckeyes to continue working to keep their class the top-ranked one in college football with these few important names still on the big board.

Ohio State hoops staying in the mix for multiple top players

Football taking majority of the attention with the season basically here, Ohio State men’s basketball’s staff is deserving of some credit too for the work they are also putting in on the recruiting trail. Seen this week with multiple roster additions, Jake Diebler and his crew are proving to be no slouch of their own when it comes to the pursuit of high-profile talent. Wednesday saw that be the case as multiple players kept the Buckeyes in the mix as they narrowed down their options.

Starting with the No. 3 player nationally and top combo guard in the 2025 class per the 247Sports Composite, Darryn Peterson is now down to just eight schools as he gets closer to a decision.

A 6-foot-5, 195 athlete out of West Virginia, Peterson holds well over 20 offers to his name from some of the top programs in the country. A five-star on every recruiting site out there, Peterson has Arizona State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, USC, Washington, and Ohio State still under consideration before he makes a final call to the school of his choice.

What would be a crown jewel type of addition for any school, Ohio State has to like the fact that they are still in the mix this late into the cycle for 2025. Only one commit for the Buckeyes thus far, Diebler is likely to put on the full-court press in these recruitments, and being a school that is pretty close to home for Peterson, expect Ohio State to be right in the thick of it for the long haul. For now, the plan to get him back on campus comes first.

Staying right in the 2025 class, another impressive guard kept the Buckeyes in his top schools list after narrowing it down. Four-star point guard, Jalen Reece is next up on the list and the No. 67 player nationally and 11th best point guard in the 2025 class per the 247Sports Composite has just seven programs he’s still looking at from here on before making his commitment public.

A Florida native with double-digit offers, cutting his recruitment down to nearly half of the schools that have offered, Reece included Cincinnati, Dayton, LSU, Penn State, Providence, South Florida, and Ohio State as his finalists.

Another player the Buckeyes would love to add to their current 2025 class, the point-guard position is one that is being looked at closely and Reece certainly fits that mold.

Moving right along with one more elite 2025 talent that has the Buckeyes at the forefront of their recruitments, Ohio State was also able to find their name on the list for Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 player nationally and second-best power forward in the 2025 class per the 247Sports Composite.

A 6-foot-9, 205 pound athlete out of Georgia, Wilson has nearly 30 offers to his name and once again from many of the top programs from around the country, and rightfully so as another five-star talent. Cutting out over half the schools that have offered thus far, Wilson announced a top schools list of just 12 and kept Ohio State in that grouping.

Rounding out the rest of his final schools, Wilson still has Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Central Florida, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, and USC as part of his top 12. Obviously some of the blue-bloods in college basketball listed, this will not be an easy recruitment to land, but Ohio State staying in the mix for these five-star guys is all you can ask for this early on into the staff’s tenure.

Simmons experienced a B1G baptism by fire last season but played better down the stretch. If he cuts down on penalties and continues to protect the Buckeyes’ QB, I expect him to earn all-conference honors.

As preseason camp begins this week, Land-Grant Holy Land is diving into its final theme every week of the off-season. This week is all about making predictions that may or may not be reasonable, in fact, some might say they are bold. You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our ”Bold Predictions” articles here.

This week is all about Bold Predictions here at LGHL, which means that I get to once again daydream about being featured on Freezing Cold Takes someday.

That’s right, I would wear it as a badge of honor. Because many of the most prominent and influential (loudest) figures in sports media have been roasted on FCT at one point or another. Hell, some even seem to be regular, almost-intentional contributors. I won’t name names, but a certain network with two letters and a number at the end basically provides half the damn content for FCT.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown need to break up- just like Russ & KD needed to break up.

They both saw 4 conference finals & 1 NBA finals appearance in 6 years.

But like Russ and KD- Tatum and Brown will be better apart. Let’s talk! pic.twitter.com/jz4VFbHAq4

— Emmanuel Acho (@EmmanuelAcho) May 30, 2023

Now that I’ve given a free plug to multiple other sports-driven sites/platforms – sorry, LGHL – I should probably admit and point out that I’ve had plenty of my own freezing cold takes. Just last year I predicted that J.T. Tuimoloau would reach double-digit sacks and possibly even set the Ohio State single-season sack record. The year before that, in 2022, I predicted that Julian Fleming would finish second on the team in receiving yards... Almost, right?

But you know what they say: Fortune favors the bold. So I am going to keep on swinging, keep on making bold predictions. Then maybe one of these days/years, I’ll finally be celebrated for my incredible, uncanny foresight and intuition.

This time around, I am predicting that OSU’s Josh Simmons will make an All-Big Ten Team in 2024/for the ‘24 season. That’s right, baby! The Buckeyes’ much and often-maligned left tackle will be an all-conference performer this season, continuing his ascent that began in earnest after a rough first month or two of “big boy” football.

Simmons was a late addition to Ohio State’s roster last season, coming aboard after spring practice(s). He played right tackle exclusively at San Diego State, and most just assumed that he would do the same in Columbus. Especially since he joined the program as late as he did.

However, due to the Buckeyes’ lack of other (better) options, Simmons was eventually named OSU’s starting left tackle after beating out the likes of... umm... some guys? I mean, I guess one could say that Josh Fryar was also in the running for the starting LT gig, however, the decision to keep the latter on the right side was made shortly after Simmons arrived.

So once last season began, few were – or should have been – surprised when Simmons struggled. Ohio State wasn’t facing a murderer’s row of opponents, but Indiana and Notre Dame still presented a big step from the Mountain West teams that Simmons was used to playing against. And it certainly showed. Because for the first month or so of the season, there were times when he looked borderline unplayable.

Part of that was penalties. Early on, it looked like Simmons had never heard of a snap count. And his holding penalties seemed to come at the worst possible time(s). Another issue with or for the former Aztec was his “bad” reps. When Simmons got beat, he got B-E-A-T. Although, miscommunication and missed assignments by others certainly contributed to some of those ugly reps.

But as the season progressed, so did Simmons. He earned an 88.4 pass block grade at Wisconsin, followed by an 83.1 run block grade at Rutgers (the following week). Two weeks after that, he earned an 80.3 overall grade against Minnesota, his best overall grade of the season.

There were still ups and downs throughout the second half of the season for Simmons, but generally speaking, he played fairly well against Big Ten opponents. His regular season pass block grade ended up at 74.0, best on the team. And prior to the Cotton Bowl, which I don’t hold against anyone other than Ohio State coaches, Simmons allowed only 12 pressures... With 0 sacks! That’s a big, fat goose egg during the regular season, folks.

Ohio State LT Josh Simmons is one of four Big Ten offensive tackles with 200+ pass blocking snaps this season and 0 sacks allowed, per @PFF.

After a rocky start, Simmons has allowed a combined 4 pressures over the last 6 games, according to PFF.

— Andy Backstrom (@andybackstrom) November 22, 2023

If Simmons can clean up his penalties and play with a bit more consistency, then I absolutely believe that he can and will earn a spot on one of the All-Big Ten teams. I mean, Josh Fryar was named to the First Team last season, and he didn’t exactly light the world on fire (no offense).

So do not be surprised if or when Simmons is named an all-conference performer. He has all the tools to be successful in Columbus, it’s just a matter of using those tools correctly and consistently.

Ohio State adding Kansas State transfer guard Ques Glover to bolster backcourt depth

After losing Taison Chatman to a season-ending knee injury, Ohio State is adding veteran guard Ques Glover for the 2024-25 season.

Glover, who played 99 games in four seasons split between Florida and Samford (with a brief stop at BYU), joins the Buckeyes after a year spent at Kansas State, where he missed the entire 2023-24 season with a knee injury. A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Glover averaged a career-high 19.2 points per game in his first year at Samford, where he was a first-team all-Southern Conference pick and a finalist for the Lou Henson Award, given out annually to the nation’s top mid-major player.

This will be Glover’s sixth year of college basketball. After playing four seasons, Glover was eligible for a medical redshirt last season, allowing him to now use the extra year of eligibility afforded to everyone who participated in the 2020-21 season to play for the Buckeyes.

A member of the 2019 recruiting class, Glover was a three-star prospect rated No. 366 nationally according to the 247Sports.com composite. He’s listed as a 6-0, 185-pound guard on Kansas State’s roster.

Glover is expected to give first-year coach Jake Diebler another experienced option in the backcourt. Third-year guard Bruce Thornton and fifth-year South Carolina transfer Meechie Johnson Jr. will assume the bulk of the minutes with freshman John “Juni” Mobley Jr. and Oakland and San Diego State transfer Micah Parrish expected to also play key roles.

Chatman’s injury, though, created a need for another roster addition. Although lightly used as a freshman, Chatman had seen more playing time with Diebler in place of Chris Holtmann and was poised for a more significant role as a sophomore before suffering a torn ACL early in summer workouts.

Former Kansas State Guard Ques Glover Commits to Ohio State, Replenishes Team's Backcourt Depth

Ohio State has replenished its backcourt depth with a late transfer addition.

Former Kansas State, Samford and Florida guard Ques Glover committed to the Buckeyes out of the transfer portal and will spend his final year of collegiate basketball playing for Jake Diebler in Columbus.

Glover updated his Instagram account on Monday to reflect that he is now a Buckeye, and an Ohio State spokesperson confirmed that Glover had joined the team.

Glover will not be one of Ohio State’s 13 scholarship players this season. However, he will receive NIL compensation that covers his costs for attending the university.

Ohio State brings aboard Croatian center Ivan Njegovan

Njegovan, on the other hand, will arrive at Ohio State with four years of eligibility remaining. He’ll turn 20 on Sept. 18. Hailing from Zadar, Croatia, he’s played the last three seasons in the ABA and Croatian Premier Leagues, including for KK Bosco in the Favbet Premier League, otherwise known as the top level of Croatian professional basketball.

In 20 games with KK Bosco during the 2023-24 season, Njegovan averaged 8.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per contest.

This summer, Njegovan took part in the U20 European Championships for the Croatian National Team. He averaged 6.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing. That seven-game stretch culminated in an impressive performance against Bulgaria on July 21, during which he piled up 15 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

Njegovan will compete for playing time in the frontcourt this season at Ohio State with Kentucky transfer Aaron Bradshaw, Duke transfer Sean Stewart and returning sophomore Austin Parks. Now the Buckeyes have three pure centers in Bradshaw, Parks and Njegovan.
