On today’s episode of “Land-Grant Uncut,” we are bringing you unedited audio from the Tuesday, Aug. 27 press conference featuring Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, and starting quarterback Will Howard. The three discussed the final week of camp as they head into the Akron matchup on Saturday.

Day announced a handful of starters, most importantly at the right guard position where Tegra Tshabola will be first up on Saturday, although other guys will be in the mix as well. On defense, Knowles said that he considers Cody Simon, Sonny Styles, and C.J. Hicks all starting linebackers and they should play nearly equal amounts. Finally, Will Howard discusses his transition to being OSU’s starter and the differences between Columbus and Manhattan, Kansas.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 29 Goodyear Cotton Bowl - Missouri vs Ohio State

The Buckeyes are huge home favorites in their 2024 season opener.

Ohio State is set to begin its 2024 campaign on Saturday against Akron, entering the first game of the new season as massive favorites.

Bettings Odds: Ohio State -50.5 | O/U 57.5 (per DraftKings Sportsbook)

The Buckeyes are coming off a year that saw them miss on all three of their major goals: beating Michigan, winning the Big Ten and winning a national title. While the Wolverines could see a bit of a step back this season without Jim Harbaugh — and more importantly Connor Stalions — the other two goals have now gotten even harder to accomplish with the addition of Oregon to the Big Ten and the introduction of a 12-team College Football Playoff.

The Zips, meanwhile, enter this season looking to turn things around from a year ago when they finished 2-10 with only one win over an FBS opponent (a 31-27 victory over Kent State). Unfortunately for Akron, that record is nothing new to the program, having finished with that exact same mark each of the last three years.

It has been six-straight losing seasons overall for the Zips, who enter their third campaign under head coach Joe Moorehead looking to hopefully right the ship and reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2017.

Minus Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State brings back the majority of its offense from the 2023 season with two big transfer portal additions in quarterback Will Howard and running back Quinshon Judkins. Howard takes over at QB1, while Judkins joins TreVeyon Henderson as the best RB duo in the country.

Emeka Egbuka headlines a wide receiver group whose top four guys are all former five-star prospects in Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss and true freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith. Up front, Ohio State is hoping to see improvement along the offensive line, with three returning starters and a transfer addition in center Seth McLaughlin from Alabama.

On the other side, the Buckeyes’ defense figures to be one of the best units nationwide. An already strong group from last season returns all of its major contributors outside of Mike Hall Jr. at defensive tackle, and adds to it freshman All-American Caleb Downs at safety. The secondary is loaded, with Denzel Burke, Davison Igbinosun, Jordan Hancock and Lathan Ransom joining Downs on the back end.

Former five-star Sonny Styles moves down from safety to linebacker, and another pair of former five-stars in Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau return to start at the defensive end spots. Tyleik Williams is back up the middle, and guys like CJ Hicks, Arvell Reese and Mitchell Melton are all X-factors at the mystical JACK position just itching to get after opposing quarterbacks.

Just last week, Akron named its starting quarterback in Cal transfer Ben Finley. The junior QB started two games apiece at both NC State and Cal, having tallied 1,484 passing yards with seven touchdowns and nine picks over 15 total appearances between the two schools.

The Zips will need to get more from their ground game, which ranked 131st in FBS a year ago, and hope to get something out of Michigan State transfer Jordon Simmons. Akron’s top three pass catchers from last season are gone, with Alex Adams the returning leader in the clubhouse having caught 22 balls for 188 yards and two touchdowns in 2023.

Akron’s defense far outplayed its offense last season, ranking No. 32 nationally in yards allowed per game. Defensive end CJ McNunnally returns coming off a First Team All-MAC selection, leading the team with an impressive seven sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss last year.

The Zips also get their tackles leader back in linebacker Antavious Fish, totaling 95 tackles a year ago, as well as linebacker Bryan McCoy, who finished right behind Fish with 94 tackles. The secondary will be led by Devonte Golden-Nelson, who tied for a team-high two picks last season.

Things aren’t going to get any easier to begin the 2024 season for Akron, with a trip to Ohio State to kick things off and two more P4 road trips on the non-conference schedule at Rutgers and South Carolina. The oddsmakers are not expecting much of an improvement this year for the Zips, with their win total set at just 3.5.

The Buckeyes are not going to be one of few those wins.

As Sonny Styles moves from safety to linebacker, will Styles or Hicks get the start at the Will linebacker position?

Every day from now until the start of the season, Land-Grant Holy Land is highlighting Ohio State football players that you should be watching this season. Check out all of our ”Player to Watch” articles to get ready for the season opener against Akron.

There are a lot of different storylines and players to watch heading into the season for the Buckeyes. However, there is an argument that the main area to watch is the linebacker group, and in particular C.J. Hicks.

Hicks was a five-star prospect out of Archbishop Alter High School in Dayton, Ohio, and was the No. 2 linebacker in the country, the No. 2 player in the state of Ohio behind Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, and the No. 10 player nationally.

Allen Trieu of 247 Sports projected Hicks to be a first-round pick, and compared him to Fred Warner. Trieu had this to say about Hicks as a high school senior:

“A long defender who added good weight between his sophomore and junior seasons. Is growing more towards a true linebacker, but still shows the athleticism to play all over the field including out in space and even returned punts and played running back still at his size. Excellent blitzer who has explosive ability to shoot gaps or come off the edge. Additional strength was noticeable on his senior film. Ball skills are good, which he shows on offense and he should be a great coverage linebacker at the next level.”

However, in 25 career games for the Buckeyes in his first two seasons, he has recorded just nine solo tackles, five assists, and one tackle for loss. Now, he is ready for a bigger role as his junior season approaches, and everyone around the team has something good to say about Hicks.

“I think C.J., where he is now compared to where he was last fall, he’s a lot better football player,” position coach James Laurinaitis said.

“He doesn’t lack anything physically, so I think he’s getting better in the film room and studying and doing all that little stuff, the stuff that no one really sees; I think that’s where he’s gotten better. It’ll pay off down the road for him, 100 percent,” linebacker Cody Simon said.

However, with safety Sonny Styles moving to linebacker after Caleb Downs transferred to Ohio State from Alabama, it could be either Styles or Hicks that get the nod to play the Will next to Cody Simon. Hicks took most of the first team reps at Will linebacker in the spring game, but defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has not ruled out the possibility of playing all three together or a combination of the three.

“You get into a three-linebacker package, Sonny, Cody, and C.J.; you’re pretty good,” Knowles said. “But you can’t have just one guy. So, if Sonny’s not there at the Sam, then C.J.’s gotta know how to play it too so that you can bring in Gabe (Powers) at Mike, and Cody can play Will, and you still have a great lineup. So, C.J. has to know how to play both positions.”

I think most people can agree: When you have athletes like Styles and Hicks on the roster, you just have to get them on the field and figure it out later. And if Hicks is the starter at the Will, expect him to be a star on the defense. If not, he will carve out a role for himself regardless.

Capital One Orange Bowl - Georgia v Florida State

Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image Of Sport/Getty Images

Your (almost) daily dose of good-natured, Ohio State banter.

On Saturday we got a little taste of college football, as a few Week 0 games were played. There definitely were some fun moments throughout the day: Georgia Tech upsetting Florida State in Ireland, Montana State mounting a comeback against New Mexico, and SMU rallying to beat Nevada in Reno. Essentially Saturday was a bit of a dry run for what we’ll see this weekend and for the next five months.

While there are some interesting matchups on this week’s schedule, Ohio State’s game against Akron isn’t one of them. Seeing the Buckeyes in action at Ohio Stadium will be great to see, but there shouldn’t be any mystery in the result, as Ohio State is favored by 50 points. With the talent gap between the teams, the Buckeyes should cruise and be playing backups in the second half. There is no reason Ohio State should have any trouble with Akron on Saturday afternoon.

Since there isn’t much intrigue with Ohio State’s season opener, today we are going to focus on other entertaining matchups around the country this coming weekend. There are three matchups between ranked teams on the schedule, as well as a number of schools making their debut in a new conference. Maybe there is a ranked team that you think could be on upset alert in their first game of the season. No matter what game you most want to see, we have what is shaping up to be an incredible college football season ahead of us.

Today’s question: Aside from Ohio State’s opener, what game are you most excited to see this weekend?

We’d love to hear your choices. Either respond to us on Twitter at @Landgrant33 or leave your choice in the comments.

Brett’s answer: No. 14 Clemson vs. No. 1 Georgia

Seeing Dabo Swinney humbled is always must-see TV. Clemson’s head grifter’s seat is getting hotter with each season that passes. Since losing in the national title game to LSU at the end of the 2019 season, Clemson hasn’t won more than 11 games in each of the last four seasons. While most schools would kill to win anywhere from 9 to 11 games a year, prior to 2020 Clemson had won at least 14 games four times in the previous five seasons. Things might have been a little better at Clemson recently if Dabo didn’t have so much disdain for NIL and the transfer portal.

On the other side of this matchup are the Georgia Bulldogs, who have to still be smarting from missing out on last season’s CFP after losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. The loss to the Crimson Tide was Georgia’s first loss since the loss to Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship Game. Not only will the Bulldogs return quarterback Carson Beck, they brought in Trevor Etienne after the running back from Florida entered the transfer portal. Georgia does have some tough regular season games on the road this season, but they are still one of the favorites to make the College Football Playoff.

Even though this game is being played at a “neutral site” in Atlanta, this might as well be a home game for the Bulldogs since they are so used to playing at Mercedes Benz Stadium. I’m hoping Georgia lights up Clemson, adding to uncertainty in Dabo’s future with the Tigers. You already know he is feeling the heat since he isn’t taking calls on his call-in show after Tyler from Spartanburg embarrassed him last year. Even though I’m really interested in this game, it’s not because I want it to be a close game. Clemson getting blown out in this game would be a hilarious thing to watch before Ohio State kicks off at 3:30.

Matt’s answer: Fresno State vs. No. 9 Michigan

I’m not gonna lie, the pickin’s... they be rough this weekend. Brett picked really the only marquee matchup of interest. You’ve got No. 7 Notre Dame vs. No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 19 Miami vs. unranked Florida, but neither of those games truly excite the cockles of my heart. ND and A&M are two brands that I have grown incredibly tired of in the past half-decade. After hearing about them ad nauseam only to have them regularly turn out underwhelming products has been tedious at best. Then there’s the two Florida schools... I live in Orlando, and you couldn’t get me interested in a game between the Canes and Gators unless you paid me. Talk about programs that underperform on a regular basis.

So, I’m stuck looking at a slate of matchups that is uninspiring, at best. But to be honest, it’s Week 1, that’s probably the way that it should be. Of course, having a few titanic struggles to open the season is always awesome, but in all actuality, the excitement of this week is just the fact that we have games to watch at all. Let the teams, coaches, and players get their feet underneath them before we get into the major matchups.

Nonetheless, I am forced to pick a game, so I am going with the one featuring our friendly neighborhood cheaters, the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines. The Skunk Bears will open their national title defense at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC against the unranked Fresno State Bulldogs. No, this won’t be a major ranked vs. ranked matchup, but Fresno St. is one of those Group of 5 teams that has just enough spunk to make games interesting. They aren’t picked to contend for the G5 spot in the College Football Playoff or anything, but they just might have enough to jump up and sting a team missing most of its major contributors from last year, both in terms of the sign-stealers and players.

I wouldn’t say that the Corn and Blue are in complete disarray, because, despite what we would hope for, they do bring back a lot of experienced players and have more than enough talent to be a force in the Big Ten this season... but there might be just enough disarray with the Notice of Allegations being presented this week for the Bulldogs to pull off an App. State-type performance.

So, while I’m not predicting a TTUN loss on Saturday, I will damn sure be watching just in case it happens!

Our predictions for the teams that will finish in the top half of the B1G, two more “official” Buckeyes, a starting punter, Michigan’s notice of allegations, and our predictions for the Akron game.

It’s finally game week and we couldn’t be more excited. Before we get you ready for Ohio State vs. Akron, we start this week’s show with the latest news out of camp, including the latest Buckeyes to get the black stripes removed from their helmets. We also discussed Nick McLarty winning the starting punting job in preseason camp.

The NCAA has delivered its official notice of allegations to Michigan and we discuss the slowness of that process, why we shouldn’t expect any punishment to happen this season, and the potential for the Wolverines to qualify for repeat offender status.

College football started over the weekend with Week 0, and we quickly touched on Georgia Tech’s upset of Florida State in Ireland and an entertaining game between Montana State and New Mexico.

We conclude our predictions for the 2024 Big Ten final standings with a look at which teams we think will finish in the conference’s top half. Our lists were similar, but we did have a few slight disagreements. We agreed on the top two finishers, however, and you can let us know if you think we got it right or wrong.

Finally, we looked toward Saturday’s matchup between the Buckeyes and the Akron Zips. We provide our picks for the players we think will have standout games (our “picks to click”), and do our best to predict the final score. We don’t expect a close game.

We’d love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email.

2025 four-star WR Phillip Bell | via @phillipbelliii on X.com

Ohio State is hoping to win on and off the field Saturday, as the 2024 regular season kicks off and a top Ohio State WR target is set to come off the board.

It finally happened. College football is back and will return to Columbus, Ohio this Saturday when Ohio State plays host to Akron. The upcoming season is one with the highest of expectations for Ryan Day and this year’s crop of Buckeyes. Additionally, the Big Ten added the likes of Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA.

With all that being said, much of the talk around town will focus on Saturday’s kickoff and how the current roster of Buckeyes will come to form.

However, do not expect that to also mean that recruiting will take a backseat for the Ohio State coaching staff. The Buckeyes have the nation’s top class in the current cycle and the team is not finished from adding to it. Ohio State is also putting in the early work in the 2026 recruiting class as well.

Because of this continued effort, Ohio State continued to make the college football headlines Monday.

Four-star WR has Ohio State in top 2, will commit Saturday

For those that follow Ohio State recruiting, and honestly for those that do not, it is common knowledge that the Buckeyes, led by Brian Hartline, are good at recruiting the wide receiver position.

Recruiting class after recruiting class, the Buckeyes bring in some of the best hauls at the position. Ohio State has three commitments in this current class with four-stars Quincy Porter and De’zie Jones to go alongside three-star and Ohio WR Bodpegn Miller.

Ohio State is looking to add to this haul and may do so sooner than later as 2025 four-star WR Phillip Bell (Mission Viejo, CA / Mission Viejo) announced his top two schools on Monday and also is set to announce his commitment this Saturday, Aug. 31.

Standout Mission Viejo (Calif.) WR Phillip Bell has cut his list of schools down to two and will make his college choice later this month https://t.co/XYXq9lTJyg pic.twitter.com/PArJqSuTSm

— Greg Biggins (@GregBiggins) August 25, 2024

Alongside Ohio State, Bell is also considering USC. The two schools have long been thought of as the leaders in his recruitment. USC especially seemed like the favorites early in his recruitment, but the Buckeyes have gained some serious steam down the stretch.

Bell took official visits to both Ohio State and USC — as well as Penn State, Washington and Georgia. Washington may still have some life left in it for Bell’s recruitment but it is mainly down to the Buckeyes or Trojans, with the Buckeyes having the slightest of edges over USC.

Bell is quite possibly the top-remaining prospect at wide receiver left on Ohio State’s big board, and Brian Hartline’s record on getting wideout’s he wants is unmatched. This one is certainly not a guarantee for the Buckeyes, but Ohio State has to like where it sits in this one.

Bell is the No. 19 WR and the No. 184 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is also the No. 16 recruit from the talent-rich state of California.

Quick Hits

  • Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class is almost wrapped up, and the Buckeyes have been placing more of a focus on next year’s cycle. The hard work seems to be paying off for Ryan Day and the Ohio State coaching staff as the team was the recipient of a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for 2026 four-star defensive lineman Aiden Harris (Matthews, NC / Weddington).

Harris just received a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes last week and already the team is the early favorites to land his services. Harris is the No. 2 DL and the No. 42 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is also the No. 4 recruit out of North Carolina.
