Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

DiHard said:
thanks....you just solved everything with that incredibly indepth analysis of the ohio state quarterback situation.....fantastic stuff.....

ill forward this to tressel asap....it is sure to open his eyes and make him see the whole situation in a new perspective.....

cant wait to read your offensive line analysis...... :slappy:

No reason to be a smart ass. You don't have to co-opt the players' frustration on these message boards, we all are confused. I would prefer a leader under center, regardless of the time he has to throw the ball. A leader will make the line block better. A leader can motivate a running back to look for holes. Zwick hasn't been a leader at all and looks like a significant Ohio State Cinderella recruit. You're thinking to simple. Sure the line sucks and we can't run the ball. Which in turn keeps the defense on the field for 3/4 of the game. But until a Quarterback, and it typically has to be, will step up and lead, these problems will continue.

I'd rather worry about Smith off the field than Zwick on the field. He sucks, there isn't any argument one can make after the games he started so far.

I really don't think it matters who the QB is unless we can get Michael Vick involved somehow. Don't you people see the offense's common denominator here. Let me spell it out. No matter which QB is in, no passing game + no matter which RB is in, no running game = NO OFFENSIVE LINE. If these guys had more than 3 seconds to make a decision, you'd see a huge difference in the outcomes of these games. In every game this year I can't count the amount of times the RB gets the ball simultaneously getting grabbed by 2 guys on the defense. The only thing I can see that might put Smith ahead of Zwick is he may be able to get out of trouble because of his footspeed. (The reason for the Michael Vick comment)

there doesn't seem to be much difference b/w zwick and smith..both are equally bad..Zwick had one nice half against marshall and di proclaimed him to be NFL first round pick..best qb at OSU.Now he wants to stick with that..so he disses anyone that says smith is good. We will see how Zwick reacts when he is benched for a while...

I think both would be much better QBs with a little time, and I don't mean experience. Yes Zwick has made some bad mistakes just as all "rookie" QBs will. But if either one had more than a couple of seconds to go through his options this would not even be a topic on this board. Want proof.... watch the Iowa massacre again and just watch Matt Roth steamroll anybody we put out there to block him.

i have been arguing for weeks that brett farve and peyton manning would go 9-23 for 98 yards and 33 yards rushing in this offense.....

it doesnt matter who the qb is right now....period....my sarcasm is because this topic is like a broken record or....

:moo: this puppy is so dead that there is nothing left to beat.....

I don't think any of us have much credibility in diagnosing this teams problems.

We argued Pittman was the answer, then that Smith was the answer. And of course that the play calling was the answer. The closest any of us may have came to the right problem were those pointing at the OL - an area where the alternatives are few.

Whatever the problems were three weeks ago they are different now. We have a team with no heart (where was the fire in the opening quarter against Iowa?) and a team that the may be separating from the coaches and one another.

Granted, that last statement is reading between the lines of what few candid comments have come from the players, but it would not be unusual for a team whose sites were set on an NC and now must improve to make it to a bowl game in Detroit to have an appreciable level of dissention.

Righting this ship no longer has much to do with shuffling personnel - unless it is putting the motivated players on the field regardless of talent level and footwork.

I'm done with the whole notion of tearing down one player to boost one's argument about another.

We have no clue what kind of QB Zwick would be under "normal" circumstances. Nor do we have a clue what kind Smith would be. We do know that Zwick has shown more ugly than pretty under horrific circumstances. We know Smith hasn't had much opportunity to show anything yet, but in his limited time, that he hasn't shown any (or much) more than Justin has.

To suggest either athlete, at such an early point in their college careers, under such miserable circumstances, "sucks", is both inappropriate and unwelcome. I say this less as commentary on the post that prompted it alone, and more as a general theme towards an increased number of incidents that go beyond what we're supposed to be about here.

Frankly, I feel sorry for whoever takes the field as our starting QB next week. No one should have to suffer this scenario when they're just getting started.

100% on the money.

I wonder....will Zwick or Smith improve the tackling on defense? Maybe they can help Nate Salley not get run the fuck over by a 185 pound quarterback. :slappy:

Will Zwick or Smith help Holmes hold on to the damned football? I mean, neither one of them can manage to hold on to it themselves...

I know! Maybe we can move Zwick to DE so that we can get some pressure on the opposing QB! Oh, wait. He probably can't catch the QB, so we'll have to send Shuttle...errr...I mean Smith instead.

The problems this year go so much deeper than QB that I really don't give a rat's ass who plays. Put in Ginn for all I care. Maybe he can throw it to himself.

What? What the hell do you know? Where do you get off thinking you know ANYTHING about these two young boys. I mean, you probably couldn't even identify what Justin Zwick looks like in a lineup and I'd stake my worth as a man you couldn't pick his voice out from 5 people without a total guess.

You're getting so much shit tossed at you because you wing wild and inane accusations and act like you know something the rest of us don't. We don't need that on this board, so please shut the hell up and/or go away.

If I were a Michigan fan, (which I'm not) I would read these posts and figure that things were going poorly and the fans (we fans) were completely freaked out by it. Well,
If that's the case, that's okay. We just aren't accustomed to losing like this.

Things go in cycles, and hopefully the rest of the year will be a good learning and growing time for the team. That could happen if we win out or lose out. What will we learn??

Buckeye fans can disagree, but let's try not to attack each other.

I sure don't know what has to change. I was hoping that when Smith came in it would provide a spark, right or wrong. I had to chuckle watching him stumble around a little bit. I mean, poor kid -- he's dying to get in and then he looked really nervous on his first series. But what the heck, it was on the road, loud crowd.

So, hopefully we'll get some rhythm back this week. And hopefully that will mean a win.

I will say this -- I just watched Ben Roethlisberger, and man, he sure looked on the money. It doesn't look like Justin is playing the same game as Ben. It's that ice in the veins, that coolness in the head. Will Zwick get that after a few more starts?

Don't be so touchy. Compare his numbers this season to other Quarterbacks.

Through 6 games:

Code:
Comp/G Pass Eff. Rank Qb Rating
J. Zwick (OSU) 13.5 96 107.0
J. Cutler (Vanderbilt) 14 25 139.1

One could argue Vanderbilt has a better offensive line... they are 80th in rushing and Ohio State is 104th--not that much of a parity.

Buck Pierce of the mighty Arkansas State is 23rd in Passer efficiency with 12.67 att/game. They are 87th in rushing offense. Stats can be telling, sometimes you should just overlook them. But isn't 6 games long enough to learn about your QB? That is more than half the season.
