Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

We have gotten worse. But numbers over the course of 6 games say a lot more than 6 quarters. The truth is, Ohio State has been the worst team in the country in rushing the past 6 quarters. Should we pass to run or run to pass?

Don't be so touchy. Compare his numbers this season to other Quarterbacks.

Through 6 games:

Code:
Comp/G Pass Eff. Rank Qb Rating
J. Zwick (OSU) 13.5 96 107.0
J. Cutler (Vanderbilt) 14 25 139.1

One could argue Vanderbilt has a better offensive line... they are 80th in rushing and Ohio State is 104th--not that much of a parity.

Buck Pierce of the mighty Arkansas State is 23rd in Passer efficiency with 12.67 att/game. They are 87th in rushing offense. Stats can be telling, sometimes you should just overlook them. But isn't 6 games long enough to learn about your QB? That is more than half the season.

HarlotFag: If you've watched the games, then you know the OL has flat out sucked during the three losses and for certain portions of our wins. The only game where they played decently for most of the game was the opener against Cincy. Right now, there is no OL in the country that is getting their asses beat as consistently as ours. Even Troy Smith had major problems during his initial couple of series. His TD drive at the end of the game came against a soft Iowa defense which didn't put near as much pressure on him as they did the rest of the game before that. While I agree that Smith should get the nod to start against Indiana, even if Zwick "heals", don't come on here spouting off on how Smith is the answer and that he has leadership abilities that Zwick doesn't.

You missed my point, Bucknut dropout. My point was--you don't know shit about these kids, so stop dumbing the area up with bullshit like "BLAH BLAH WE NEED LEADERS AND SMITH IS A LEADER GET ZWICK OUTTA THEIR (sic)".

When you've got input that's not deriding hearsay trashtalk with no base at all--go ahead and post. You probably won't be listened to very much, but at least you won't be treated like you got caught defliing Woody's grave.

Very good Oh and clarity, this is now past a train wreck and the true character of the coaches, players and the fans will come forward. It's pretty discouraging to hear some of the comments. A real shame. Onward and upward. BUCKUP!!
Whilst I'm on a mean streak--it's not a cupcake party here, man. If you want to be a fan, be a fan. If you've got something negative to say--it's not a problem. Just back it up, please. Look at what the guy said. I haven't seen what he's posted in the past--but anything else like that and he probably deserves to be run out on a rail.

Grow up people. Really take a moment to think about this: was Krenzel given much more time than these guys have been? I recall Wisconsin players, prior to last years game, talking about how slow and lazy our line was on ESPN. How many open receivers, passes thrown behind receivers, fumbles while running into your own blockers, prayers tossed into the secondary, playactions that wouldn't fool a blind man can we win with? I refuse to believe that our offensive line is that much worse than Vanderbilt's. It is truly telling that the players chose Smith over Zwick in both spring games. Put in your tapes from throughout the season, what has really changed?

Time for you to go to the bank and take out a loan, so you can buy a fuckin' clue. First you say "was Krenzel given much more time than these guys have been?" Maybe not much more, but at least they were able to sustain drives more often so the defense didn't get totally wore out. Case in point, our first three conference games last year were against the same teams and in the same order as this year (Northwestern, Wisconsin, Iowa). We gave up 0, 17, and 10 points last year, while giving up 27 (regulation), 24, and 33 points this year. Normally we shut down opponents in the second half, but this year they've been scoring more in the second half...a clear sign of a tired defense.

Next you say, "I recall Wisconsin players, prior to last years game, talking about how slow and lazy our line was on ESPN." That was before the game, not after. Also, we've seen how those Wisconsin assholes like to talk shit, so it doesn't mean squat.

Then, you say "How many open receivers, passes thrown behind receivers, fumbles while running into your own blockers, prayers tossed into the secondary, playactions that wouldn't fool a blind man can we win with?" Zwick has already missed more open receivers than Krenzel did all last year. He is so shaken up right now that he hasn't thrown a single tight spiral in two games. Every time he drops back to pass, I break out my duck call, hoping to guide the ball to a Buckeye receiver. He wouldn't have such "passing paranoia" if he weren't continuously running for his life.

Then your real gem, "It is truly telling that the players chose Smith over Zwick in both spring games." Uh, didn't someone already tell you that those same players voted for Zwick when they were told that the QB wasn't allowed to run? Sounds like you have a serious case of "selective stupidity".

Wow. I just read this whole thread, and am now dumber for having done so. Why the hell is there even a debate over the QB? Isn't that the least of our concerns? What about the horrible offensive line? Or the piss-poor running backs? More of a concern to me, what about the completely conservative, inept, moronic, you-have-got-to-be-kidding-me play-calling? Or on the other side of the ball, shouldn't defense be an even bigger concern? This was one of the best defenses in the country last year, and we let IOWA kill us. 33 points. And, believe it or not, Iowa was successful running the ball down our throats with their 5th string RB. Yup, 5th string. Did I mention that Iowa was ranked 109th in the country in rushing? At least, they were before they played tOSU.

Get a clue, scarletflag. There are much bigger issues right now than QB, and making comments such as yours serve absolutely no purpose.

Yes,I'm a fan and since I'll attend two football related reunions this coming week in Buckeye town I'll probably have even more answers to this seasons shortcomings. However the ass-clowns that dominate these boards would not believe a fellow fan's knowledge anyway. Pitiful when things get mean spirited and spiteful. Buckup

Correct, I'm leaving for the west coast till thursday and probably need to chill out a bit otherwise I might kick someone next weekend. As frustrated as any other Buck fan here or anywhere. I remember the last home Michigan game I attended with my Dad.[Coops last] I remember the feeling that day going to the stadium knowing we were gonna get blasted. Turned out to be a tight one when I think Kolesar caught a long ball and that was the end. Never ever thought we all would experiance this under Coach T. A real shame with no quick solutions...

Mili, your entire post just reinforced what I have already said. Again, we're all adults (or at least young adults) here and can refrain from smearing. Our problems aren't independent of the quarterback situation. There are intangibles, along with performance, that Zwick hasn't brought to the table. If you want to continue debate, as opposed to childish and immature attacks, we can discuss who would be better for the job. The next time I want your opinion on the priority of Ohio States problems I will ask.
