Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

He has been playing RB every game this year because no way he has been playing QB. I am just dreaming of the day that our OL is mean and tough enough to run out of the I, 2 back sets (lead FB), 2 TE, maybe some 3 receivers but get rid of this spread crap. I mean we are not Northwestern and our coaches obviously do not understand the concept of the spread offense. Let's get back to OSU football and have 60/40 or 50/50 of run to pass. I mean last night they did not even get Pittman into a groove. Let him get some carries.

But, how can it not be coaching? We are producing many NFL players. Our defense is undeniably great with great talent. Conversely, with equal talent on our offense we cannot produce on the field over the course of four years. I agree there is plenty of room for execution improvement. However, if after four years the kids are not executing it must be that they aren't talented or they aren't coached well. I am certain they are talented because that's what the NFL says. So it must be coaching. It's a combination of position coaching, scheming and playcalling. Luckily, that can be addressed.

How many good NFL players has our offense produced in the last 4 years? How many skill players, specifically, and how does that number compare to our defense. There may be more, but this is all I'm remembering right now:
QB- Krenzel
RB- None
WR- Michael Jenkins

I'm sure there are more, and I'm just having a brain problem because of how much I drank last night, but I can name a lot more defensive players we put into the NFL than I can offensive.

Note: you brought it up so it's your job to do the research, I'm going to take a nap :lol:

It's a COACHING problem because the COACH is either ineffective as a teacher or he does not recognize that the student is unable to learn yet he is starting anyway. It's coaching either way look you at it. Because the alternative is that the student does not have the raw talent to learn and play his position. Alex Stepanovich and Shane Olivea are both starting... and for the life of me, i can't rememeber his name, but our '01 center starts as well...
Jonathan Wells gets his share of carries, and you can hardly blame a serious knee injury on Drew Carter-- the Panthers expected him to play... did i mention Ben Hartsock? he's not a star, but he plays a lot for the Colts as the blocking TE.

I think we all watched the last two games last year, Michigan and Okie State, and thought, "Wow! Can't wait for the 05 season. Smith is another Michael Vick and Ginn will score 25 TDS, 8 on kick/punt returns. (remember the thread, "How many Return TDs will Ginn get in 05?") Make space for another crystal football in the trophy case."

Turns out Michigan and Okie State weren't that good as shown by their collective records this year. Smith is no Vick and it looks like teams have figured out how to limit Ginn's explosiveness. In fact, I swear that I saw Penn State covering Ginn with one man and daring us to try and get the ball to him... someone with more football db knowledge tell me if I'm wrong

There's no shame in loosing games to two teams as tough as Texas and Penn State and we certainly showed that we could stay on the field with the best teams in CFB.

You have to be disappointed when expectations were so high and when the defense is so good that all you need is a mediocre offense. The Bucks haven't reached that level yet.

Put me in the camp that advocates the hiring of a quality OC, if there is one to be found. I really respect JT, but feel his strength does not lie in the area of play-calling. Additionally, Troy had a HORRIBLE game. That doesn't make him a bad QB, but he sure hasn't shown the brilliance of last year's scUM game. He missed so many open receivers (Gonzo, anyone?) and reads that it HURT. Ginn can't run a route to save his mother's life....I was very disappointed in Troy's performance, but even more disappointed in Ginn's lack of effort.

I didn't get to watch on TV, but from what I saw Ginn was open A LOT. Troy just doesn't look his way.

What about Todd

Why not give Todd some snap’s @ QB and see what happens. TS is not going to get it done for us, Zwick can’t do it, if Todd cant then we have a fundamental breakdown in coaching. Just a idea, very frustrated buckeye fan along wioth the rest of you.

Zwick hasn't even had a chance this season. He has looked good against OkSt, Miami, and most people thought that he looked better than Smith throwing the ball against Texas. He has completed nearly 75% of his passes this season. He seems to get the ball to his playmakers more often. The thing about Smith is that as long as he is the QB he will be the offensive player of the game for better or worse because he doesn't get anyone else involved. I would put Zwick back in and if he doesn't cut it give TB a chance.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with this. I'm just so frustrated with TS not seeing the Big Ten's best recieving corps open down field.
