Zach Smith (Official Thread)

Obviously, you have to feel terrible for Smith’s child. Anyone questioning the credibility of his ex-wife on these matters needs to consider this: She has absolutely nothing to gain by Smith getting fired. She loses in this as well. I’m sure that’s a big reason why she didn’t push the issue harder, sooner. It’s typical of victims of domestic violence to protect their abuser from the legal system for financial reasons. Perhaps she finally had enough and decided the financial consequences were preferable to doing nothing.

I wonder if this is a situation where Earle came to Urban about his troubled grandchild and Urban tried to keep him out of trouble by giving him a good job and keeping him under his wing. I can't imagine Urban putting up with these problems for a guy with no college football experience other than doing Earle a favor.

That's why you leave these types of characters as quality control coaches not position coaches.

I’m a bit disappointed in all of this.....really should’ve never been on a staff like UF or OSU’s. It was nepotism at its finest....

Mediocre coach, but he recruited very well, mostly because he’s an 18 year old kid trapped in 34 year old man’s body.

You can get away with that if you keep your nose clean.....not so much when you’re violating protective orders.

I am a bit disappointed in Urban, and also a bit disappointed in how the situation is being resolved. Brian Hartline is no angel either.....disrupted the locker room in multiple stops along his college and NFL career, and also was arrested in Miami as a Dolphin for abandoning a truck that he wrecked, in a likely DUI incident. He fled scene to avoid the DUI. Hartline was also a bit prickish, IMO, when LeBron left CLE for Miami (that’s small potatoes compared to other issues).

Hartline needed to grow up, and I believe he likely has. He certainly got every ounce out of his ability which is encouraging. Just the fact that he played in NFL, and has actual experience at the position, bodes well for his career as a WR coach. I just think he needs to “prove it” as well. He’s not without faults....I’m rooting for him, but can’t say I’ve ever been a huge fan of his “outspokenness” and ability to be so polarizing.

In the same breath, I think the dude is fiery. And fiery often leads to great coaching. He’s opinionated and vocal about it, sometimes thats exactly what you want. It’s just knowing how to pull back and be diplomatic so you don’t get yourself in trouble.....

given that the 2009 incident was known before zach was hired by meyer at osu, i think it would be in osu's best interest to pay him for 2018 and try to put the whole ordeal in the rear-view mirror as quickly and quietly as possible. if the remainder of his contract is not honored, then i suspect that this won't play out well. the administration has to understand what kind of personality they're dealing with. someone with that kind of twitter persona is probably not going to go without making a commotion.

More I think of it the more I wonder at how different it is from Tressel and tatgate.

Urban knew and did nothing which is about the same as lying about it.
It's not illegally keeping players eligible though so this is very different. Urban May be didn't morally handle this the best way but nothing was against the rules.

He's fine.
