Zach Smith (Official Thread)

I am starting to get concerned about the Buckeyes not being able to make teams pay for playing man with S/LB's on the slot receivers.

That is as much on the WR's as it is on the QB.
I saw a big gain for Dontre last night when a LB was "trying" to cover him... But I agree, those mismatches should be utilized more. But give credit to UW for their scheme.

To be fair, most of the passes seem to be loaded up for homeruns. We're not seeing many slants, curls, or drag routes 10-15 yards across the middle middle or to the sticks. It's been run heavy with JT/Weber and then go for a 20+ yard bombs on a fly route. Not sure why intermediate passing isn't occurring? Too successful in the earlier games to not use it?

That said, even with the lack of big time production by the receivers this season, Smith seems to have done a really good job getting guys like Brown & McLauren into starting roles.

The major offensive problem has been consistent WR play. Flat out. Outside of Brown, no one else consistently has gotten separation and made enough plays.

I'm not going to say that there haven't been miscues by the WR corp; however, JT's passing down field hasn't been on the mark on a the vast majority of deep balls even when the receivers are wide open.

I can partially agree. But we all should have expected that this team would have a lot of issues being so young. That Oklahoma game spoiled everyone. There's still some growing that needs to happen between the offense

Stupid question maybe. Are you guys going to the games? When I see the game on TV, before the ball is thrown the camera focuses in on the QB, line, and backfield. It's not until the ball is released that the camera pans downfield.

So how are you guys seeing every receivers and their routes while also watching JT, line play, and the running back - all at once?

No, not going to games but listening to Meyers press conferences, watching replays and rewatching games(when time permits). Our WRs are athletes playing WR. Still very young at the position and the rotating seems to hurt the QB chemistry.

First off, holy cow I wish I had that much time to rewatch games. Secondly, I think the rotation is Smith maybe giving guys a chance to step up?

Oh I don't have that much free time, that's why I said if time permits, lol. And its mainly just watching the OU, IU, and Tulsa.
And I have no problem with him trying to do that in OOC games, but we can clearly see now that no all of the guys are ready and some should be in solely for garbage time as there isn't consistent rhythm and timing with JT with anyone outside of Brown, Samuel and Wilson. The later in the season we get, there should be a list of 2-3 other WRs that are solely 1st team(Campbell and McLaurin), and those guys get those reps with JT.

It looks like DJ Byrne's agrees with my sentiment in the Noah Brown section:
