You're a hipster if.....

So, here's a fishing story. Carp were a delicacy in Europe. In the hay day of US bucket biology in the late 19 c carp were dumped off railway bridges across the country. They very quickly displaced the native fish and soon became regarded as trash.

I'm always amazed how people find certain activities elitist--fly fishing, sailing, cycling....You can spend a whole lot on these sports (or not). You can also spend a whole lot making a 69 Chevelle go really fast in a straight line. I spent a whole lot more trying to make a Chevelle go fast in the 70's than I did on the fly fishing gear I bought in the 80's (and still use).

And there's is nothing philosophical about feeding your family. It is meeting a basic need.

I feel saddened that the lines in this country have grown so hateful that we pick on certain groups because of "lifestyle".
Funny? Or just the expression of hatred for those that are "different".
What next?
How about the unwashed who enjoy hotdogs on a barbeque?
Or "flavored" beer?

Well....it depends on the "flavored" beer. Bud-a-rita or whatever ever they call it--drink it and you should be shot.

I have great admiration for hunters who eat what they catch.
That is doing it "right".

You can throw a stick of dynamite or a worm in a hole of water and get fish. You can drag a net through and get fish. You can also cast a lure of your own device and get a fish. Some methods are a means to an end--you get dinner. Some are intellectually and philosophically rewarding--dinner isn't the priority. You can spend a lot of money on fly fishing gear or not. You can also drive a Pinto or a Mercedes. Until the French revolutionized the spinning reel (pretty much allowing any idiot to cast a 100 yards) recreational fishing--bait cast or fly rod--took a fair amount of skill. A hipster that can master a flyrod is not a hipster--he's an elitist prick. Viva elitist pricks!

Don't forget crank telephoning and noodling for 'em.

Meh, there's just a lot easier way to get from here to there than carp... pin bones, not super easy to get the mud vein out... and needs to be SUPER fresh, I've had carp and buffalo before, I'll got with "not so good" and "ok". But, it ain't catch fillet freeze and eat and be pretty good lik crappie or yellow perch or something like that. But, at least in Ohio, we're pretty spoiled, I watch people compain about white bass and sheephead... if you handle them right, nothing wrong at all with white bass and you can do ok with the drum... I've had the boil it and serve it like its fake lobster anyway, its ok. But hey, people around here want walleye, saugey yellow perch etc. (I guess white perch, which is really a bass as well is pretty good, i've not messed with them though). I may keep some sucker if I run across any this spring too... just for fun.

The problem isn't people finding things elitist, its the people doing them that act like they are. But yeah, Cycling is a good one too, I mean, I'd never look down on someone on a huffy as I blow by them on a Pinarello, but, I wouldn't expect someone on a all campy pinarello to look down on my SRAM components, but, it happens... you know. :slappy:

From my perspective you reinforce my point.
