Not to be a dick, but that was a shitty pass. When they were breaking down Leinarts game, they used that play as an example of why hes overrated. That was not a well thrown ball. They said that if he threw that in the NFL it wouldve been intercepted.

Bingo. If the DB had been looking back, he would've easily knocked it down or intercepted it.

This has been a really wonderful thread to read, and sometimes re-read as we lead up to Draft day.

Here are some thoughts about the reliability of QB selections in the Draft.

1 -- Picking a QB in the 1st round is an absolute and complete crap-shoot. (And for those who understand odds, probably worse than a crap-shoot).
For every Dan Marino, or John Elway the history of the draft is littered with over-rated "studs" who for one reason or another didn't cut it.
Cases in point
The problem children - Ryan Leaf, Art Schlichter
The over-rated - Akili Smith and a whole draft's worth of other can't miss prospects
Not a person a rational GM should touch with a ten-foot barge pole- Jeff George...
2 -- Many of the best known names in Pro Football, with great resumes and actual honest to god winning production were under-rated in the draft.
Cases in point
Too small - Joe Theisman 4th round pick (actually by Miami)
Not from a big enough program - Brett Favre (really, that is one of the things that was said) 2nd round pick Atlanta
Others were simply more highly favored - Joe Montana picked by SF in the 3rd round
And of course from the New England Patriots the poster boy of a winner that everyone else gave short thrift to - Tom Brady, selected 199th overall, 6th round.

The point being that GMs of NFL teams have more failures selecting QBs than (I would argue) any other position on the team. Those they denigrate often exceed at the highest levels of the game. Those they beatify early more often than not fall from grace in a multitude of ways.

Bottom line, pro teams need to re-invent how they evaluate and draft for the all important position of QB, they also need to realistically assess how they compensate these princes of the gridiron. For some it might be better to back-load their contracts till they have time to flourish and develop. (Plunkett {1st overall pick} or Ken Stabler {2nd round pick} anyone).

OK - I'm off the pulpit now.

Or Young's knee being down on one of the TDs? My point isn't that SC should've won. My point is that you can't discount something Leinart did just because a DB should or could have done something different.
why not? Unlike petty arguments over hypothetical 'what ifs' like the near int's, this topic happened and can obviously be analyzed. The audible was good, the poise was excellent... but the pass was poor.

Well okay, but then can't you say the same about Young willing his team to win and the near-int from Ting? It goes both ways.

nope, b/c the near-int to Ting isn't viewed as a great play by Young. Of course they both have plays they'd rather forget.

edit: yes, it was a typo... methomps.

We can all do the "what-if" game, or anaylze things after the fact, but the most important thing is how the play ended. Leinart completed the pass against ND and won the game, and Young defeated USC and won the National Championship. For the most part, how they did or did not get there isn't as relevant as the end result.

It looks like the Titans will turn to Vince Young as the quarterback of the future.

Indications now are that the Titans, who have the No. 3 pick in the first round, likely will pick Texas quarterback Vince Young, passing on Matt Leinart if he's still on the board, despite Leinart's past with Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, a former Trojans assistant coach, and coach Jeff Fisher's infatuation with Leinart. General manager Floyd Reese, who'll make the final decision, prefers Young.

One thing that cannot be understated in this process is the involvment of Bud Adams. He typically stays out of most of the football choices but this could be one time for him to step in.

Bud is a Texas guy, and on top of that he is a Houstonian. He was run out of town(he earned it) and would still very much like to rub any amount of winning in their faces. Vince presents a once in a lifetime opportunity for Bud to "steal" a local hero from Houston and then face the texans twice a year. Think Clevland passing on LeBron and then Detroit gets him(or who ever would hurt the most).

As unfair as it is(to vince, the texans, and reggie) many Houstonians will view passing on Vince the same as passing on LeBron. Bud knows it and must be chomping at the bit.
