Not going to argue bits and pieces here because this pot is already sufficiently stirred, but the demotion of a highly accomplished SID during a period of turmoil is not a small issue. If you disagree, feel free...I see it otherwise.

Not sure we even disagree. Just that equating her demotion to "walls closing in on Tressel" seems a too great a leap. Certainly, laterally demoting an SID is not "normal" and denotes some turmoil in the program.

I see it as analogous to a Press Secretary for the WH. When the administration has problems with the media, it is not uncommon to see the Press Secretary (SID here) replaced.

Blah...misunderstood your original post. I agree it is not a definite "walls closing in" moment but it is definitely not a good sign.

Im puzzled.....many are saying they expect or think more will come out (Spielman/local media)....why would Tress dig his heels in? Why would tOSU allow him too. If Spiels knows somthing, surely all involved know somthing and getting an atty to represent you in front of the NCAA makes no sense...if somthing so bad is coming down the pipe why wouldnt the board of trustees, Gee, Smith etc etc head this all off by cutting ties? Unless they were convinced this is a witch hunt and do not believe anything else of substance will come out.

It seems to me that Spiels was just speculating (based on how much digging is going on), and that Shelly Poe being reassigned could partly be a result of the negative reaction to the press conferences in both December and March, during which folks got the impression that tOSU was trying to spin the bad news, rather than just being forthcoming and taking the lumps.

PR-wise, December's presser came off trying to say that guys were selling stuff to help their families, but people wonder how tattoos are helping their families pay bills. And in March part of the message was JT trying to protect confidentiality, but that sounded hollow when it was later revealed that TP's mentor saw the emails from Cicero.

In the current state of affairs, tOSU doesn't just need an SID, but more of a PR person to minimize problems of public perception. But it's just speculation on my part.

Was it Shelly Poe's idea to announce to the world, Ohio State players sold their awards and memorabilia to help their poor families?

Was it Shelly Poe's idea to state "maybe we should hire a tattoo artist outside the WHAC?"

Who's idea was it for Gee to say he "hopes Tressel doesn't fire him?".

The first question, I don't know; the last two obviously not. I've talked to Shelly Poe and I like her, I'm not trying to cast aspersions on her or make her a scapecoat. Just coming up with a theory to explain the move.

Ya, that wasn't even directed at you. I have more beef with Gene Smith than anyone, outside of Trssel who didn't report the issues. IMO, Gene has top sign off on the ridiculos stories told at the first press conference (players not having proper NCAA training and players needing to sell awards for their poor families).

The comment about hiring a tattoo artist was in awful taste. It hasn't been mentioned, but Gene's previous communication with players on twitter seemed very irresponsible as well. Not in a "things he wrote on people's pages" sense, but the fact that he'd make a comment to a player who on the same page was making questionable comments....hard to explain, I guess, but always sat weird with me.

And Gee just made an awful off the cuff remark.

Add it all together and you have a pretty easy target, I guess.

The word "fiasco" springs immediately to mind.

This is quite literally THE BOTTOM LINE. The billion dollar question. Everything else is superfluous. 123 days have passed since OSU found JT's email string which is more than enough time to definitively determine that JT is in material breach of his contract. His contract is not worded like Jim O'Brien's was. 123 days and the school has not fired him. Roughly 80 days of one of the biggest media drek storms sports has seen in some while. No firing of Jim Tressel. Quite to the contrary, unequivocal support for JT has been expressed from both the President of the University and its Athletic Director. Six outstanding football recruits for 2012 remain as committed as recruits can be at this juncture. Moreover, 5* RB Brionte Dunn has expressed that the only way he would look elsewhere was if JT was gone. Why would Dunn wish to play for an Ohio State program headed by JT if, as many "experts" predict, it will mean playing under the pains of heavy penalties brought on by JT's misdeeds? I contend that individuals in Tressel's situation who have no case to make before the COI do not hire Gene Marsh. They run off to the Seattle Seahawks. Indeed, why has Ohio State not cut ties?

I've read your post three times and still can't find where you recommend the death penalty. Please explain.

Dreadfully sorry. I'm a bit sleep deprived and combined with having to pay full [censored]-ing price for my Chicken McNuggets my brain is quite obviously working improperly. For future reference please simply take as a given that I fully believe that the death penalty is the appropriate sanction for our athletic department regardless of how logically incongruous such belief is with the remainder of what I might have written.

Just a reminder to all thread regulars. If there's one thing I think we're all in on...it's three dollar 20pcs. So remember Buckeye Nation. Tomorrow. Remember who told you.
