But it's still fine to publicly humiliate him tomorrow before you beat him by twenty on Friday. :p

I warned you about bailing on your own intervention, Gator.

(Besides, you have not established with any certainty that these "neutral" observers have actually become "haters", only that they are likely to view OSU/JT with suspicion and distrust. As far as actual hatin' goes, the haters were haters already.)

You see, it would be this goofy press conference, some crazy Federal
criminal drug deal, and a bunch of missing information about if, or who,
he told about the e-mails... and so I would have different CONCLUSIONS
about it that you could JUMP TO.

Good evening Sir, my name is Steve. I come from a rough area. I used to be addicted to crack but now I am off it and trying to stay clean. That is why I am selling magazine subscriptions

Re: Outside perception of OSU

I follow college football as closely as anyone I know. Specifically I follow the Arkansas Razorbacks and the SEC obsessively, and college football at large closely.

Before the Arkansas vs OSU Sugar Bowl, and before I became a member of this fine message board and educated myself on your University and Program, if asked I would have said the following about the OSU football team. In no particular order:

? Maurice Clarett's troubles were a reflection of the character of the OSU program
? Maurice Clarett's troubles tainted the NC of 2002
? Jim Tressell wears sweater vests
? OSU can't beat the SEC
? Plays second fiddle to Michigan in the Big 10
? OSU plays a boring brand of football
? Woody Hayes punched a player and was fired
? The long period between Hayes and Tressell wasn't notable

Prior to my experience here, I would not have said:

? OSU has a squeaky clean reputation
? Jim Tressell has a sterling reputation

That's about it.

It's certainly not hate or even dislike, it's just a general impression from someone who pays very close attention to college football in general, but not OSU or the Big 10 in particular.

Obviously, very little of that is an accurate perception. I certainly don't mean any of this to come across as 'bashing' the team, the program, the university or Coach Tressell.

Still, if I had to guess, I'd guess that is a fairly accurate overview of the perception of OSU outside the Big 10 among college football fans before the recent and on-going troubles.

Since the recent and ongoing troubles, I would guess that the general, non Big 10 college football fan would add to the list above:

? OSU cheats
? Jim Tressell is a liar

Again, that isn't an entirely accurate perception, but I'd bet good money that's what most people outside the Big 10 think.

Should that matter to OSU fan (and for the record, I count myself as an OSU fan since joining this excellent board)? Probably not in any significant way. We all have to decide for ourselves what we can and can't abide.

Personally, I don't think Jim Tressell has committed a fireable offense and deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I think the 5 game suspension should stand as-is.

I do however, think that OSU should vacate a significant portion of wins from the '10 season, not including the Sugar Bowl.

I also think, that OSU deserves to lose some scholarships over all this mess. How many over how long a period of time, I can't say, but I think the NCAA has to do something over and above what OSU has self-imposed.

That theory SHOULD have died out about the same time the television became popular.

I understand why some people have came up with this, but I just don't see how you could only vacate part of the season. Either all the wins have to be vacated or none of them. Yes the NCAA "ruled the players eligible" for the Sugar Bowl..but they also ruled the players eligible for all the previous games. So either the Tressel thing is severe enough to now decide that they WEREN'T eligible at all (it is sort of being considered a "new" violation) or they stick to their ruling.

We can't over sign and have to lose scholarships? NCAA=turrible

. Is this a joke? Because if not, I think it speaks volumes about what you knew about OSU, or college football in particular. In the last 10 years, OSU has been in 8 BCS bowl games (including winning an NC and playing in 2 other NC games) and has won 8 Big Ten titles (including 6 in a row); UM has been in exactly 3 BCS bowls (losing all 3, I might add) and has won 2 Big Ten titles. Oh, and OSU has won 7 straight in the rivalry.

Try to keep up.

Allow me to pile on by asking WTF? You mean those dark ages when two other HOF coaches led the Buckeyes to 19 bowl games, 7 Big Ten titles, 8 top-10 seasons, and a Heisman winner? 192-69-5 (73.4%) isn't notable? If this is as close as anyone you know follows CFB, I think you need to surround yourself by some more informed CFB fans. :tongue2:

My pre-interest in Buckeye football - which was almost exactly equal to that of Big 10 football - was that the play calling was boring and that you would regularly lose to the PAC -10 in the Rose Bowl. And I vaguely remembered a bunch of games lost to Michigan in the Cooper era.

Anything outside of SEC football, prior to the BCS era and the - need - to follow other conferences to gauge bowl and NC chances - I just did not care about much of anything outside of the SEC.

I have never ever said that any of the negative perceptions were based upon an abundance of knowledge of your program or your coach. Ignorant perception is still perception. And incorrect perceptions beget more incorrect perceptions, and in fact solidify them. That is why they have change of venues in trials when the case is so notorious due to widespread coverage in an area. The barrage of facts, often incorrect facts, and the multiple opinions, often incorrect opinions, makes it almost impossible for the true facts to come out and be looked upon impartially.

Everyone gets mad when I correct someone about the perception and say that it is not all former haters, even when I acknowledge that the opinions/perceptions are not based upon correct or more complete knowledge. Everyone insists that it is inconceivable to have a negative opinion about Tress and y'all based upon the events of the last four months. OK. Smoov and I have about the same opinion of Tress and the penalties, as we have become far more educated about the program and the man than we would have absent our good fortune in finding this board.

Others are not as educated about tOSU program and coach. Why they should not have a negative opinion right now, given the negative coverage, the bad presser and the e-mails, I cannot fathom.
