my guess is it would have to be something like what happened with bruce pearl - a picture comes out. but in this case an email or recorded conversation.

A journalist does not have to name his source. On the other hand, a respectable journalist would at least note how the source should be considered reliable (tied to the athletic department, or tied to Rife, etc.). He should also note how Tressel was contacted (email, phone call, random conversation, etc.). The whole thing is really vague. It could be anywhere from a drunk bum on the street to Tressel's wife.

In my mind, as long as Auburn still has the crystal ball, I think Ohio State is in the clear.

NCAA going after Ohio State would be completely hypocritical. The suspension appeal on the other hand...

The thing is this sounds like it comes from a second hand source, not the person that notified Tressel. Unless the "source" is the person that notified Tressel (doesn't sound that way), or it was an email (which I believe can be obtained due to Tressel being an employee of a public university) I don't see how this could be confirmed. Everything else would require a court order, and the NCAA does not have that power.

Sounds like a lot of hearsay right now. I can call a questionable news source and say that an unnamed male prostitute blew John Boehner while he was getting his Oompa Loompa on in the spray booth. If they choose to report it, it doesn't mean there's a damn thing to it. The real issue is ESPN. With the Big Ten and Pac 10 ties to Fox Sports, they would absolutely love to ramp up the witch hunt bandwagon against the most prominent programs in each conference.

If a credible source, who has correspondence, e-mail, phone logs etc, comes forth with a credible account of HIS notifying JT, then the [Mark May] is going to hit the fan. I know what I would want to happen, but I"ll keep that personal until more damning evidence comes out. In the end, it'll come down to what Gee, Wex and Ong want to happen.

Either one of two things is going on here:

1. Yahoo dug around for 2 months after receiving a call from this source but couldn't find anything to corroborate it so they just ran with it. Then they call it a 2-month investigation hoping to make the report sound more official despite the fact that source is passing along hearsay; OR

2. Yahoo knows more than they put in the report - meaning they can tie it all together and thet are just waiting to release more details in the coming days.

we want #1, and if this were ESPN, I would guess that's probably tthe case. My hunch is that its #2. And that would be absolutely terrible.

Agree. With housing and cars comes contracts and written agreements for exchanges of money for products.

As everyone has already noted there has to be an exchange of words on paper or tape. Since the 5 Buckeyes did their dealings in the back of a store with no paper trail, it is going to be hard to then link this to back to Tressel knowing and not acting.

On the other hand, this kind of "nothing is here" attitude is the same feeling we had when the stories about Pryor & Co. selling memorabilia and the same attitude we had about Jim Obrien's dealings. Kind of worried but I'll try my hardest to reserve judgement.

Very true, but SEC schools have a reputation for cheating. I want to believe that JT does not. Right now, this is someone telling a Yahoo reporter that someone else told JT. Right now, that's a lot of hearsay and very little smoke much less fire. I'll be the first to take a (very) hard line if this version of things can be proven (or even shown to be highly probable). I just need more before I'm willing to fetch the rope.

The party line during the suspensions was that Tressel had nothing to do with the suspensions getting pushed back. That didn't pass the smell test to me but its not worth fighting over. Now there is more smoke.

I'll go ahead and say right now if this is somehow proven true, I doubt it will and I hope it isn't, Tressel needs to be fired immediately on confirmation.

That is the difference between us and the SEC.

If they conducted a 2-month investigation, you'd imagine they have more than they've released so far. On the other hand, if they had proof or anything of substance, you'd think they would release it now instead of taking the chance that another outlet beats them to the punch.
