It's not a violation of any "confidentiality" to discuss a legal situation with your attorney. I'm sorry, but JT comes across as a bit too naive on this point.

From what we have to go on right now this is the part that still bothers me as well. I am having a hard time completely buying a man of Tressels age and experience got so flustered he just made a big booboo that oh by the way kept some players eligible and helped him win games.

Second point is that JT polishes his image and works the public like no one in recent memory so when I see a 24ish hour delay to get the presser ready I am a bit skeptical when everything is geared to play to the home fans emotions for the guy.

Thirdly, I'd like to know when he was "cleared" to discuss this because I can't help but wonder where all this remorse and hand wringing was before they were outed. When was he going to come clean?

I don't know about that. There is hardly a good way this can be spun. They (ESPN) just quoted a passage from his book (Winner's Manual) and in it, he mentions about "winning at all costs".

Its really worrisome and disappointing. Hopefully there won't be program-wide sanctions.

Fuck ESPN.

The initial e-mail to him would really clear up a majority of the questions.

Biggest question left unanswered is if the 2 players involved in drug trafficking case were known to be selling items for cash/benefits.

If Im understanding this correctly:

Coach Tressel was given info about federal drug trafficking and an open FBI search into the program. He was held to strict confidentiality until cleared in December. If he could not go to the NCAA, then why is he in trouble?

And they the (FBI or FEDS.) do this via e-mail, yea right!

To reiterate a point in a previous post, it seems rather naive to think Tressel had to keep this close to his vest. If he was concerned about the player's safety, wouldn't he try to find out more, talk to other authority figures. How does keeping it to himself prevent the players from getting into more trouble? He mentions a federal drug investigation, that sounds pretty serious and something that an adult and leader of his profile should recognize is something that needs to be addressed.

Each one of those carries a million dollar question, therefore, that's a $3 million dollar question there....
This is what I dont get either...

Can they self-suspend and then appeal the suspensions?
The suspensions today are more like a suggestion to the NCAA. The NCAA has to investigate yet.

If the tat 5 got 5 games, why not Tressel? Plus being Tressel played with players who would have been suspended, they may have to give up some wins.

This mess is far from over for Tressel, too bad also. He is(was) one of the good guys.

A few things:

1. Unless I missed something in the presser, it isn't clear to me that the e-mails came from the FBI or federal prosecutors: Hell, it might have come from the lawyer for the tattoo shop owner (and if so I hope for his sake that he cleared the communication with his client). I don't buy that JT thought he had any sort of legal obligation to keep the emails confidential

2. IMO JT knew better than this: I'll absolutely buy that he was most concerned about his players' well-being, but he's human like the rest of us and I think that, as Rod Stewart sang, he "looked to find a reason to believe" that he was doing the right thing . . . when he knew in his gut that he wasn't. That said, I also absolutely agree with Gee's remarks re: JT's overall body of work and the overall quality of his character over time. Given the circumstances, I really like how the Administration has handled this.

3. Great job by both Gee and Smith in the presser. decent job by JT all things considered.

4. Long-term, this doesn't really hurt the program: Players/recruits and parents of players/recruits know that JT will have their back, the hordes of haters nationally were there before and weren't going anywhere anyway, and the two-game suspension is highly unlikely to result in a loss on the field and will presumably give Fickell a chance to show his HC qualifications.

Agree with ALL these point. I think you hit the nail on the head, my man.

Edit: except with number one. I think JT explicitly said that he never talked to a federal investigator.

GS said they were nearing completion of their investigation with participation by the NCAA and were about to self-report. The leak just made them move it up.

The presser raised another set of questions that unfortunately won't be answered until we see the NCAA's public report. On another note what exactly did the Yahoo investigators uncover when the NCAA investigators were involved in this new matter since January?

If I had to guess, and that's all it is at this point is a guess, I would say that Yahoo Sports sent a FOIA request to OSU regarding past emails, looking for anything, especially after OSU's claim that they just learned about TATgate in December. The timeline fits with Yahoo's "two" months of investigation. I would guess that when processing Yahoo's request, Tressel's emails were uncovered and immediately reported.

If there is no documentation(tape/writing)....... it didn't happen.
Just like the rumor about a player/players suspended recently.
This shit doesn't happen in a vacuum. Someone with an agenda started this shit.

My first question is, why were confidential details of a federal investigation leaked? Someone should be fired / disbarred / something for that. JT should never have been put in the position that he was...

Second question is, who the hell was the unnamed source? That will be interesting...

Too bad ESPN has to take things out of context. And too bad they are as popular on TV as they are. I would seriously look for "Fair and Balanced" sports reports to watch instead.
