Reports that we gave Ohio State only 30 mins to respond to the Tressel piece are categorically false. They had three hours before it posted.

RT @kgordonosu: Ohio St officials were only made aware of Y!Sports story 30min before it broke, they say they will have no response tonight.

As others have said, if this was most any other news organization breaking this, I wouldn't be too worried The guys are Yahoo are not a bunch of hacks. Very concerning news. Really hope this is not the beginning of the end...

It all comes down to this "concerned party", exactly what they knew, IF they went directly to Jim Tressel about the matter, and EXACTLY what was told to Tressel. Then, upon hearing this information, did Tressel then go to our NCAA compliance staff or Gene Smith and tell them about it?

There's a whole lot more to this story that hasn't been reported yet, if there is a story at all. In the near future, it'll also come down to if "concerned party" comes out of the woodwork and tells their side of the story, questions from the media to Tressel, and if Yahoo actually had their shit together before releasing this story.

That's what gets me, Yahoo has been pretty solid on stuff like this. But they run with this story with just 'a source' says Tressel was told earlier? Really... that's all they got?

So the question is, do they have more? Maybe waiting for Ohio State's response to drop the other article? Basically putting a trap out there to see if Ohio State responds a certain way, then bring out story #2???

As Ken Gordan stated, OSU was only told 30 minutes before this story hit.

That is the square my office pool money would be bet in.

And if I have dirt on my hands I'm unavailable for comment until I can get my story straight and try to figure out if they could possibly prove it.

This doesn't look good at all folks.

going to have to produce some hard evidence...just don't see yahoo stirring up the pot and not having it
You've got to think so, but they haven't produced any hard evidence yet. At this point, it's all hearsay. Really interested in JT's answers to the impending media questions about this. Until then...

In Tressel I Trust.

Okay, say someone DID tell Coach Tressel prior to OSU's public release of the story. What if Coach Tressel then had went to the OSU compliance department who initially found nothing.

Would there be anything wrong with this?

I don't think so as long as there is a record of it.

Lets hope to God this is how it plays out.

You're right, it doesn't look good.

However, I've learned my lesson after posting in the Chris Carter thread on signing day. I want to see what this story looks like in 48 hours before I form an opinion.

Well if true that OSU wasn't informed till today that the story was going to drop. I wouldn't read anything into not getting a comment tonight as I expect Smith to have a meeting with Tressel about it before anything is said categorically one way or the other.

Could open up another can of worms. I assume OSU compliance would have asked the players if they sold the memorabilia. If they found nothing, I can only assume the players lied.

Shit. Not liking the sound of this. I know Yahoo has done a good job in getting the scoop on things, but what I find interesting is that the lid wasn't blown off this before the story hit, ala the Oregon scandal.

The only thing I can think of off the cuff here is that Tress was "informed" about this in April, he sat the guys down and point blank asked them if it was true and the guys lied at that time to Tress. Tress said, "OK" and put it to bed as he likes to treat this guys as adults and he had hoped they wouldn't lie to him. When the NCAA came in and asked the guys in December, they then felt they had to come clean and tell the truth at that time so they wouldn't fall on the fate of Dez Bryant (sp?).

I don't know. This just sucks.
