Wow, I just think a lot of us are getting too manic in our mood swings. Not too many villains here beyond Tressel's succumbing to his own self-image. I think he was just hoping it would go away, the way guys are coughing up blood but won't go to the doctor.

IMHO the only thing that needs to be "swept out" is the concept of fawning all over 5-star prospects. Whether 1-star or 5-star or none, we should only be going after recruits who are into the team concept and who want to be at The Ohio State University.

Mark my words, by Christmas time, after the regular season, this will all be old news. And we'll still be celebrating our 8th straight victory over tsun.

I don't disagree, per se, but there are some talents you have to go after anyway so long as the risk isn't ridiculous (Pat Lazear, for example). As I think about it, Tressel's "failure" may have been thinking he could take an uber talented kid like Mo C (probably the most gifted RB I've seen straight out of HS) and TP (Probably the most gifted athlete I've seen straight out of HS) and expect they'd "buy in" like ... say... another "troubled talent" Troy Smith did. .... eventually.

Of course, TS never had the hype, attention and adulation before he even stepped foot on campus that was the case with the other two. That might have been in the back of his mind when deciding to get his shit together. He knew that he might fade into oblivion otherwise. The other two had been told they were destined for NFL greatness since middle school, and Ohio State was just a necessary pit stop along the way.

I hate to say it, but the next coach will inevitably need to have a much more zero tolerance approach (and the next AD/President won't allow him to have anything but), so a TS turnaround will sadly be unlikely in the future.

Been that way for me since the way we recruited TP.
I understand if this is not possible, but are you able to expound on this a little? Aside from the circus that it became did the staff (JT in particular) conduct themselves differently with regard to TP's recruitment than they would have for any other highly coveted yet undecided recruits? I'm not suggesting or looking for anything sinister, just want to understand what changed and how.

We survived two anal probes post-Clarrett (pre Smith and Gee) with no infractions. Tressel has already taken the fall for his role in these problems, but that doesn't necessarily exempt the people he reported to at the University. Ultimately, you are responsible for your employees and the functioning of your organization. Smith and Gee need to be evaluated as to the effectiveness of their leadership in regard to these events.

That sounds admirable, and ideal, but the fan base won't tolerate 7-5 seasons. Hell, some wanted to run Tressel out of town for losing the BCS title game.

It won't be "old news" at all given the likely sanctions and the post season coaching search, both of which will keep this story alive for awhile, but the 8th straight beatdown of TSUN is quite possible.

I am a bit late to this party.

I am highly disappointed by the new revelations about Pryor and the autographs-for-cash situation, but I have to say it did not surprise me one bit. As much as I tried to tell myself that this kid was better than my gut told me, it turns out my gut was right about him. I have a feeling that there will be much more to this story in the up coming months. I admit that when the whole tattoo thing broke, I kind of shrugged it off. But now, nothing will surprise me, and that makes me sad.

With all of the new allegations that have come out in the past couple weeks, as well as the abrupt resignation of Tressel, I feel that Gene Smith has ultimately failed at his duty as the Athletic Director for the school I love. It is not coincidence that Ohio State was proven to be clean at the end of the Geiger reign and that since his departure and the hiring of Smith everything has gone to shit. I was not thrilled with the Smith hire to begin with, and now I believe that he should go ASAP. The BoT needs to show this guy the door if he can't find it himself.

All of this sucks, and it makes it hard for me to talk about college sports with the folks down here, but damn it I am a Buckeye through and through. I just want everything out on the table, clean out the shit from the AD, and move forward with a program run within the rules of the game. Go Bucks! :osu:

Finally, and I'm not minimizing anything here, but from an NCAA perspective Pryor has already admitted receiving improper benefits. Does it matter whether it was $500 worth or $40,000 worth? This is a serious question - not sure these revelations have much impact on sanctions (though I agree they will likely be large).

I have to respect your never ending reservoir of faith, but at some point the scarlet glasses have to come off and the grey kool-aid needs to be put down. The football program and the athletic department--with each passing week--are being shown to be rotten and/or grossly incompetent to the core. That goes for Tressel, Smith, the compliance department and I'm not beyond including Gee in this anymore
Rather than throwing the "glasses and kool-aid" insults my way, how about answering the question I asked? It has nothing to do with a "reservoir of faith;" it has to do with whether the dollar magnitude of an infraction really affects punishment, and it's a serious question. I'm not presupposing anything relative to the answer being "yes" or "no."

Well, in the court of public opinion, it definitely matters. It wouldn't matter if it was a court of law, but then again we're talking about the NCAA, who thinks that the word "precedent" can't possibly apply to college football, even though our nation's entire system of justice somehow makes it work.

OK. My hunch is that a dollar magnitude does effect the severity of the penalty, but I can't speak with certainty. I think the ncaa looks at a $500 handshake a little differently than a systematic 5 figure/year pay scheme worked out with a memorabilia dealer.

As I posted last night though, what really seems to elevate this beyond anything (other than perhaps JT's lying to the ncaa) in terms of sanctions potential is the paper trail that's said to exist: Pryor depositing checks from Talbott into his account, ESPN saying they've independently verified Pryor's purchases of Gucci and other luxury goods, Talbott showing up on player(s) will call ticket lists, and the athletic department going through the process of formally disassociating him from the program (for what reason; did they notify the ncaa) last Fall.

If even some of these paper trails are valid, it's game over.

Lotta in; lotta outs in this case, Man. Fortunately, I'm maintaining a strict drug regimen to keep my mind limber.

It really is saddening to hear and see how out of hand our program really has gotten lately. I don't want to hear that bullshit about every major program doing this and that. That doesn't make it any less depressing. As a student, it makes me cringe to hear about these kids that get to go to school for free, they get their major expenses taken care of, and they are the most popular kids on campus, yet they feel like they should sell their shit because "times are tough." I have zero sympathy for people trying to play the "times are tough" card. Times are good as hell, and if you think times are tough now, you wait until you hit the real world. We need to get this ship back on track and it starts with getting kids here that set good examples.
