I was using billmac as a source. I chose not to do any research of my own because I'm trying to get a job with ESPN or SI.

I went back and edited my initial post...it does in fact say unregistered...still not sure what "unregistered" means. Unregistered with AD, unregistered with Ohio DMV, were they "loaner" cars??....some more clarity/context would be good.

They actually spoke about this in the first CD piece....it means they did not register with the compliance office-which they are supposed to do when they get a new car or new place to live then it is vetted. 44 cars had not been registered with the compliance office. At best its a violation of Ohio State policy....

Pretty damaging article, IMO. The Dispatch does it again....

I find it interesting the compliance department released this information to the athletic department in November....but maybe the timing of everything is just coincidental. :roll1:

It looks like a lot of stuff that was looked at after a FOIA request.

This quote from Doug Archie is interesting:

He also said there is no extra scrutiny of star athletes who may be targets of rogue boosters or fans. "We treat all of our student athletes the same," he has said.
That may be the policy in the interest of fairness, but is it wise?

I'd recommend that the 2 extra positions in the compliance department, which Doug Archie requested in December, are filled before the University submits its response to the NCAA next month. Because if they aren't, that's almost asking for a 'failure to monitor' charge.

And a Gestapo mentality toward interviewing the players about the cars they drive wouldn't bother me one bit. If a guy shows up in the same car that he's filled in the paperwork for, and that passed the compliance department's review, he doesn't need to be questioned. But if a guy shows up with dealer's plates, or in a car that he hasn't yet submitted his paperwork for, I have no problem with some compliance department pencil-pusher telling the position coach (or some GA designated to receive this info, but not via e-mail :wink2:) that some i's need to be dotted and t's need to be crossed. And if those i's aren't dotted and t's crossed within a week, then it needs to be elevated to the head of compliance and the head football coach.

It's not rocket science, but that stuff needs to be cleaned up.

I see that telling Buckeye athletes not to drive unregistered with the compliance office cars is like telling Gators bud smokers not to smoke bud.

I think there was a "Far Side" by Gary Larson that had a two panel cartoon -one with a "what you say" and a "what they hear" caption. In the first one the owner is talking to his dog and saying, "Bad dog Fluffie, don't get in the garbage can again....you've spread trash everywhere!" The other has his dog hearing "Blah, blah Fluffy.....blah blah blah blah..."

I get the sense most of these kids are like Fluffy.

Strange that the dog hears a different spelling.

Evidently you missed the whole point of what I was writing. This was all done after the fact, in a lame attempt to play catch up.

So your point is that the Dispatch, 10tv, NBC4, etc. should be playing watchdog on OSU athletics at all times, even when there is no reason to expect anything contrary to the rules is going on?

I issue no correction. I've been moved to the top of the list for the next opening at both ESPN and SI.
