Good point only difference is none of them had an Alumni who sent an email and left a trail to follow.

The dude should have "reached out and touch someone" and called

No matter how you look at it, Tressel was put in a no win situtaion.

Fisher got fired for what he "did'nt" know

How do you know "they" didn't get an email, phone call, etc. from an alum or "friend of the program?" The difference is that they didn't get caught.

You've got me wrong if you think I'm saying it was "ok" to do what JT did. All I'm saying is that he's as fallible as any other human walking the planet. No better, no worse. That's from where the attacks are coming....those who thought he walked on water.

As for Fisher, well, you know as well as I do that he knew everything about everything. I'm sure he didn't want to know and turned a blind eye, but when his players were driving nicer vehicles than the executives at GM, you'd think that may have sounded an alarm or two.

Comparisons between Steve Fisher and Jim Tressel are like comparisons between Angelina Jolie and Minnie Pearl.

You might be able to buy Minnie for only $1.98 (the price tag on her hat), but you'd be much less likely to catch something (even though she's been dead for 15 years).

In my IMO, some "attacks"...in fact a large minority, are coming from people already pissed with JT for lackluster offensive production over ten years and see this as a way to enact change, while (whilst?) hiding behind the "he lied" facade, and claiming moral high ground over Jim Tressel. To be honest...THAT'S the reason I'm still believing in the easter bunny...just to piss them the fuck off.

They both have 1 NC and two failed attempts. Only difference is MI is a football school and winning a NC would give you, well "Tressel" status at MI.

Winning one in B-Ball gets you diddle:wink:

I am not one who has complained about the production, always been a BIG fan of "Tresselball" and our ever-evolving offense that seems to always play to the current players strengths.

With that said... not sure if he's falling on the sword for Gene Smith or not.. but using the info made available to the public... Jim Tressel should AT LEAST get what the players got.. and IMHO, he should sit out all of the 2011 season.

I don't think the info made available to the public is all there is to the story...good or bad. So your judgment is rejected.

This echoes my sentiments exactly.

Yes, coaches suspend their own players all the time. Again, that's just proving my point. That's what coaches do...all of them...they handle this stuff internally. How many times have you heard, "Player "x" has been suspended for "violation of team rules."?

Again, name me one time when any kind of NCAA violation involving an athlete has ever been reported to the NCAA by said athlete's head coach. Again, not saying it's right or wrong, just saying its never happened.

The bottom line is that it's in his contract with the university to report any ncaa violatiio/eligibility issues to his superiors. He also signs a statement to the ncaa each season saying that he is unaware of any unreported violations. You would seem to be implying that JT did not sign those two documents in good faith under the excuse of everyone else does it.

That seems a little LVish in terms of being over the top . . . Hell, I've been pissed about the offense over the years, but I've never called for JT to be fired . . . and still am not. That said, JT knew better than to not do what he didn't do and didn't do it anyway (I wanted to channel the Yogi Berra AFLAC commercial there).

It may be over the top a bit...doesn't mean there isn't truth in it.

Great post!

It's funny how these media jagoffs can talk [Mark May] about Tress only being suspended for the first two games. And how "meaningless" those first two games really are compared to the "crime". All the while ignoring the spring and summer practice suspension - apparently that part is so meaningless that it's just easier to ignore. I like the chutes and ladders comparison.
TS10 - This bolded part is incorrect. Whether this changes your opinion I do not know.

Gee's March 8 letter to the NCAA does say:

"This letter will review the institution's inquiry and also define the corrective and punitive actions, which include suspending him from coaching several games during the 2011 football season, reducing his salary, and precluding Coach Tressel from having any involvement with spring practice or summer camps in 2011."

Turns out they did not really mean it, and Coach Tressel will participate in spring and summer practice pending "pending the NCAA's decision on the case" per athletic department spokeswoman Shelly Poe. Perhaps not the best method of convincing the NCAA how seriously the institution views the violation (at least when coupled with Gee's "Hope (Tressel) doesn't fire me" line), but that is the stance y'all took.

Had I been your attorney I would have advised against both of those.

Who knows, there may have some verbal traffic between Poe and the NCAA and she felt that the NCAA wouldn't be against letting Tressel be involved in practices pending the investigation. Also, I find curious that there's no mention of Tressel's involvement in recruiting while the investigation is on-going.
