WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Santonio Holmes should be the "Poster Child" for what hard work and making a real effort to improve your life, and the life's of those around you can motivate you to accomplish. Santonio came from crap, hardcore crap. He saw his talents as a football player NOT as a way out, but rather, a way up. He came to the absolute best situation that he could have chosen as a College Student-Athlete in TOSU, and it has vaulted him to basically a Super-Bowl legend that will go on forever.

Once again, congrats to Santonio. I believe his contract is up next year, and with what he showed last night, I believe it's safe to say that he basically "won the lottery" when his time comes. And, it couldn't happen to a better person, or more specifically, a better BUCKEYE.

Peace.

Magic moment Holmes: Caught piece of Super Bowl magic
Steelers wide receiver reached out and grabbed the MVP trophy and a piece of Super Bowl lore, not to mention a trip to Disney World

TAMPA, Fla. -- Disney World, Super celebrations and sports lore had to wait.

Early yesterday morning, the Super Bowl MVP, star of professional football's world stage and stretched-to-his-fullest creator of the play that ESPN immediately heralded as the Super Bowl's greatest was curling up with his three children and their cartoon friends.

"I just wanted to spend time with my kids," Santonio Holmes said yesterday morning after a 27-23, stirring Steelers triumph, garbed in an argyle vest, untucked shirt, denims and smile. "I went up to the [hotel] room. I fed them. Put on a movie. They were very excited about watching 'Madagascar 2.' We just spent a little time together watching. I really just stayed in and relaxed a lot."

Given second chance, Steelers' Santonio Holmes makes amends

Santonio Holmes (r.) holds the Super Bowl XLIII Most Valuable Player Award with NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell.

TAMPA - Receiver Santonio Holmes made a spectacular catch to give Pittsburgh a come-from-behind victory over the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday night. For that he was voted Super Bowl MVP, getting the Disney World treatment and the whole thing.

Make no mistake, Holmes is not your father's Super Bowl MVP - the guy with the squeaky clean image, who gets immortalized on a Wheaties box. But Holmes may be the face of future Super Bowl MVPs - a guy with smudges on his slate who has been given a second chance.

In accepting the MVP trophy (again) during a morning press conference Monday, Holmes thanked everyone he could for believing in him and paving the way for him to excel in the Super Bowl.

Holmes, with his abundant athletic gifts, is the kind of player that forces NFL coaches into making difficult decisions about who they want on their rosters and how much aggravation they're willing to put up with to win. It is not as if Holmes is alone. NFL talent seems to come with a side order of trouble for coaches.

Holmes, sweet Holmes treasures magical ride
Super Bowl MVP once was a drug dealer
BY JOHN DENTON ? FLORIDA TODAY ? February 3, 2009

bilde

As strands of confetti fell upon him and black-and-gold clad Pittsburgh Steelers' fans excitedly shrieked his name, Santonio Holmes thought quietly to himself about how far he had come in life.

In a matter of years, Holmes had gone from being an admitted drug dealer on Belle Glade's street corners all the way to the famed Main Street of Walt Disney World. His view had gone from being one of abject poverty and hopelessness to now being at the so called "Happiest Place on Earth."

No one would have minded if Holmes had rubbed his bleary, sleep-deprived eyes Monday afternoon just to make sure they weren't misleading him. Holmes won the Most Valuable Player award after catching the winning touchdown in Pittsburgh's 27-23 defeat of Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII. And on Monday came some of the spoils of victory, including a Disney parade fully in Holmes' honor.

"It's very much like a dream. Everything I wanted came true," gushed Holmes, who was still wearing the grass-stained white Steelers jersey he wore the night before. "I got so many text messages and phone calls from everybody telling me that I was going to be the Super Bowl MVP. I didn't see it happening, but I knew I was capable of doing it. But everything just fell right into my hands with the help of the Lord."

Holmes' maturation is work in progress

TAMPA, Fla. ? Millions of football fans saw proof of Santonio Holmes? continued development as a wide receiver when he starred in Sunday?s Super Bowl. But what most people don?t see is the progress he?s making off the field.

Clearly a special talent when drafted by the Steelers three years ago, Holmes also came to Pittsburgh with some character flaws. He was arrested twice in 2006 ?once for disorderly conduct, once for domestic violence ? before he played in his first pro game. Then in October, he was suspended for a game after police found marijuana in his SUV.

But since then, Holmes has been one of the NFL?s most exciting players as well as a model citizen.

?I?ve seen the maturity in him on the field and off,? coach Mike Tomlin said. ?I?m proud of him for that.?

Pittsburgh Steelers' Santonio Holmes took path from Florida sugar fields to Super Bowl MVP
By Stephen F. Holder, Times Staff Writer

TAMPA ? It's a long way from the drug-infested streets Santonio Holmes grew up on to the brightly lit stage he stood upon Monday morning.

But the Belle Glade native emerged from the sugar fields to make an amazing catch that will reserve his place in NFL history.

It's all very surreal, so much so that maybe it hasn't all registered for the Most Valuable Player in Sunday's Super Bowl XLIII. After all, he didn't exactly conclude his evening with an over-the-top celebration. Instead, the Steelers receiver spent the hours after his greatest athletic achievement curled up in his hotel room watching a Disney flick with his kids.

"They were very excited about watching Madagascar 2 (Sunday) night," he said during a news conference Monday. "We definitely spent a little time together, watched the movie. I really just stayed in and relaxed a lot."

Doesn't represent the Steeler mindset? What? He's a winner - that IS the Steeler mindset.

Way to go Santonio; you are quickly becoming a Steeler legend.

Its been two days now of bashing him... he is calling out his character and saying he is all about himself.... the callers im refering to are your typical Columbus born Pittsburg fans that watch 2 games a year.... no one was defending him it was bad... he was bringing up his past called him out for not being married to his girl friend... Hooly is getting on my nerves... Bell Glade is not the best place to grow up Holmes has done well for himself... I emplore you all to e-mail Hooly.

In what ways? What is this based upon?

Typical Sports radio morons. This is definitely not the sentiment among the majority of Steeler fans - at least not the fans I know.

This is relevant conversation for what reason? Is Holmes the only professional athlete to have children out of wedlock? Why is that anyone's business?

Holmes has overcome a LOT in his life - probably more than anyone really knows - to get where he is today. It's a shame that some people can't let him enjoy his success and feel it necessary to take cheap shots at him during the best part of his life.

Why - he won't care at all. Hooley isn't worth the pixels, and will smply use any messages sent to continue his perverse raining on a parade tirades.

That's how he keeps his job. He gets on the air and says as much stupid shit as he can in an effort to piss off everybody he can. The flood of emails and phone calls confirm people actually listen to him, so he keeps his job.

You want Hooly to shut up? Ignore him.

So the guy single-handedly (or double-toe-edly) wins the Super Bowl for the team, and fans want to bash him for being all about himself? Funny how these assclown "fans" don't realize they are showing how pathetic they are that they can't even enjoy winning the freaking Super Bowl, or allow the player that won it for them to enjoy it. Seems a tad hypocritical to judge a guy and say bad things about him and then turn around and say he isn't "Steeler-like" as if that's a higher-art-thou title. Typical pro fans though. Hell, typical fans period. And typical Hooly assclowndom.

1. Give credit to his QB.
2. I personally found his LeBron-esque celebration to be hilarious and awesome. He just seems like a happy guy. I mean, when you look at him when he is talking to the press, he just seems so casual and cool. And, honestly, a ton of Steelers fans that I know own Santonio #10 jerseys.

Faces in the crowd acting holier than thou. What the [censored] else is new? It's not worth devoting a second to what fans of big time sports will say. There isn't much logic in the crazy world of sports fandom..where wins and losses really matter most, but good ole' character will surely be disected..people will say whatever with hypocrisies all over the place. Anyways..

It was mentioned that Santonio has now won titles at every level. I don't know about others, but that wasn't something that donned on me initially. Holmes, of course did indeed win a title his true freshmen year. The 2002 class really did play a nice role in the Championship season. Not only the players on the field, but guys like Holmes who pushed the vets in practice. There is of course the story of Tressel thinking about burning Holmes' redshirt before the Miami game. I still get a kick out of watching the NC game, and seeing how animated young Troy and Santonio were. They were just as a apart of that, and you knew they would go on to do some things.

We have been fortunate to bring in some fantastic classes in recent years, but that 2002 class was phenomenal. Undisputed NC, Three Big Ten Titles, Heisman Trophy, Super Bowl MVP, Hawk and Mangold..who both have a lot of football left. And of course #13 who was beastly as a freshmen.

We'll see if TP & the boys can get on that level.
