WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Pittsburgh settling for a 5th rounder sounds like they didn't even bother to shop around and field offers.

They took the best deal they could find late Sunday night -- a fifth-round choice in the April 22-24 draft from the New York Jets. It was the best offer they received after talking to a number of other NFL teams about trading Holmes.

Steelers were ready to cut Holmes before trade

Didn't stop Phily from trading McNabb to Washington for significantly less than they were originally asking...

Well not every team is the same. Not to mention that I don't know that Santonio is the type of guy that Mangini nor Holmgren wants on his team. Not saying he's a bad guy, but just the off the field stuff.

Yeah, the Steelers don't have a clue, and don't have a good track record at all, when it comes to personnel decisions. :roll2:

Because everything always remains the same. I don't blame them for getting rid of him, but for next to nothing....

They are throwing away their season with this move unless they can pick up another top 15 receiver in the league. I'm happy about it though....

GO BROWNS.

Which doesn't exactly sound like the Steelers front office.

It will be interesting as hell to see what comes of this, that's for sure.

I know Adam Schefler is saying it was only a 5th round because it is a given that he is going to be suspended for the four games. If that is the case seems like it will be hard for him to catch on with the JETS offense

Just a theory but I think this has more to do with his twitter account and admitting marijuana use. He was suspsended a game last year for being arrested on joints in his vehicle, and he vowed to stay out of trouble. Then this woman accuser comes out about him hitting her with a glass, but it doesn't sound like he'll get charged with anything...but out of the blue in the midst of this issue, he goes on Twitter and talks about waking and baking. Idiotic. Besides the stupidity of smoking marijuana when you're in the substance abuse program, to announce it to the world is just taking it to another level. It's as if he wanted kicked off the team and deeper troubles. What good can come from announcing that you've woken up and are ready to smoke a joint/hit the bowl?? Seriously...
Agreed. I love what 'Tone did for us and he's a great wideout, but it really seems like he's got some serious problems he needs to address. It's not surprising at all that the Steelers might look to cut their losses. They obviously already have another problem with Ben...

I think you may be over stating it just a bit.

Mike Wallace had the highest YPC on the team last year and more TD's than Holmes. Hines Ward led the team in receptions and yards. Heath Miller is Bens favorite target. I don't know that Sweed will ever turn into anything but the talent is still there.

Cutting ties with the soon to be expensive vet and getting similar production from an unheralded cheap young player is the type of thing the Steelers have done for ages. Also, a 5th round pick isn't exactly "nothing" in the NFL. Again, the Steelers history is full of productive middle round draft picks.

Losing Holmes sucks at first blush but from the sounds of it he was gone anyway. Past performance is no guarantee of future success but 6 SB wins buys the Steelers FO the benefit of the doubt from me.

Holmes 'shocked' by trade from Steelers
Receiver says he was caught off-guard when team sent him to New York, but sees trade as chance to start over

Wide receiver Santonio Holmes on the Steelers: "I'm definitely going to leave with great memories. I had a tremendous time, spending four years."The immediate effect of what some might call Big Monday for the Steelers is that Mike Wallace is their new starting split end.

With Santonio Holmes traded to the New York Jets for a fifth-round choice in the April 22-24 draft, Wallace becomes the logical player to step up because he has the size, speed and -- after an excellent rookie season -- the credentials coaches prefer for that spot.

The split end usually is sent deep on "go" routes and Wallace did that better than anyone in the league last season, leading the NFL with a 19.4-yard average per catch as a rookie. He caught 39 passes for 756 yards and three touchdowns as the team's No. 3 receiver.

The overall effect on the roster could come in how those receivers behind Wallace and starting flanker Hines Ward respond and whether they draft another. The Steelers, perhaps knowing that Holmes would be suspended the first four games of 2010 by the league, signed veterans Antwaan Randle El and Arnaz Battle as free agents. They also have had seven wide receivers among the 30 college prospects visit them the past 2 1/2 weeks. Limas Sweed, their second-round draft choice placed on injured reserve last season for a health issue that was not physical in nature, remains in the mix as well.

Holmes said he was "shocked" to learn the Steelers had traded him to the New York Jets but said he is "ready to move forward to start a new career."

Holmes, speaking with reporters on a conference call Monday, said Kevin Colbert, the Steelers' director of football operations, informed him of the trade about 9 p.m. Sunday.

"I was very shocked," Holmes said. "But it opened a lot of doors and gives me a new chance to start over."

The NFL announced Monday that Holmes would be suspended for the first four games of the season after violating the league's substance abuse policy.

"Right now, I'm accountable for what happened," Holmes said, adding that "I don't think I have to dig out of any holes. These guys have opened up their arms to me."

Agreed.

Let's home Santonio gets his fresh start in NY and continues to produce on the field while improving a few things off it.

Yeah, because organizations never make bad decisions. :!

How about you explain why this is good for the Steelers instead of singling me out and trying to call me an idiot, despite me having PLENTY of people in agreement - on BP, Steelers fans and non-Steelers fans, Jets and non-Jets fans, Jets players who are surprised, writers, etc.

They certainly have other good talent, but I'd argue part of Wallace's success comes from the attention placed on Santonio. Hines Ward doesn't have that much left in the tank at 34.

You should have stopped here.
