WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

No extension

The New York Jets not only stole Santonio Holmes from Pittsburgh for a paltry fifth-rounder, but they'll also get the Super Bowl XLIII most valuable player for a cheap price, too. Because of Holmes' four-game suspension, New York will pay just $577,353 of his scheduled base salary of $755,000 for 2010. And as was the case with Braylon Edwards, they'll inherit the wideout with his contract as is, ESPN.com has confirmed.

Because of the esoteric 30 percent rule, which states that a player's salary can't vary by more than 30 percent from one year to the next, there will be no contract extension for Holmes, and possibly not for cornerback Antonio Cromartie, the Jets' other big trade acquisition this spring, either. Holmes is in the final season of his rookie deal. But because he is in just his fifth year, he will only be eligible for restricted free agency next spring, provided there is no salary cap. The Jets can retain a right of first refusal, as they did with Edwards, by making him a tender offer.

The Jets recently reworked Santonio Holmes? contract to lower his base salary, so the amount of money that?s deducted for his upcoming suspension will be less. When Holmes was traded, most of his money due in 2010 was in the form of his base salary, but since he became a Jet, the team shifted the money into roster bonus, reporting bonus and signing bonus so Holmes would pay as little as possible for his fine. This clearly cannot make the NFL league office happy and goes against the spirit of the suspension.

Holmes: Made mistakes during Steelers career
(AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes acknowledged taking missteps during his four-season Steelers career, but said in a message on his website he is looking forward to a "clean start" with his new team.

The former Ohio State player was held out for one game by the Steelers in 2008 after police said they detected marijuana in his car. He was recently sued by a woman in Florida who said he threw a glass at her in a nightclub.

There also were a series of messages on Holmes' Twitter account this spring that embarrassed the Steelers, including one in which he suggested a fan kill himself.

"I have made some mistakes in my past that I am not proud of, but the most important thing is that I have learned from them," Holmes said.

Holmes was recently cast off by the Steelers for a fifth-round draft pick. In his message, he said he knows the Jets acquired him so he can help them win a Super Bowl.

"The 2010 season is going to be a great one. I know the reason (general manager) Mike Tannenbaum, coach (Rex) Ryan and (owner Woody) Johnson brought me to this team is to help win a Super Bowl and I plan on helping them accomplish that goal," Holmes said.

Holmes, the MVP of the Steelers' Super Bowl victory over Arizona in February 2009, called his time in Pittsburgh "memorable" and thanked Jets fans for welcoming him.

"God has given me the opportunity to make a clean start and I am really excited about moving forward in a positive direction," Holmes said.

I've seen some ridiculous "sense of entitlement" issues from athletes, but this one takes the cake. Turn your [censored]ing ipod off, idiot.

Seriously...he's self-inflicting damage over the most ridiculous self-enitlement behavior I may have ever seen. Turn your i-pod off, don't admit marijuana use on Twtter, don't tell fans to kill themselves, stop posting naked for women with cameras, and stop driving around with joints in your car. Please also avoid situations where glasses get thrown in peoples faces. I think that covers most of it....

Thanks.

Not justifying another incident whatsoever, but is this one of those brilliant 'no mp3 players but laptops are ok' policies?

from what I read it was a simple turn the i-pod off before flight. Lap-tops as well. No electronics until 15 thousand up....maybe you read different??

Either way, take the damn thing off and avoid another incident. Too much to lose over a song...

Also read, they escorted him from plane, and he was allowed back on after agreeing to obey flight rules...pretty embarrassing, IMO. Is he seven?

No, I didn't see anything about when he was asked. That sounds pretty embarrassing. Making a bad decision in a heated situation/fight is one thing, needing your precious music is another. Maybe he should bring a music box customized to his favorite artists :p
