WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

You'd think though that they could find better sources than a father in prison and a scummy agent claiming that Holmes "said" he got paid (which is important to note b/c he could have said it just wanting this guy to go away).

i did think about that, but i dunno man. jose canseco is about as scummy as you can get, and pretty much everyone thought he was full of shit with his story right all the way up until he was proven 100% correct. SI may be in the business of selling magazines, but they are a legit publication and aren't beholden to the 24 hour news cycle like ESPN is. if they go forward with something i will generally give it a lot more credence than if it came from a lot of other sources.

if this were some other guy in the league who has never been involved in anything shady, i might be more skeptical, but i think santonio has earned his rep and i don't find the accusations beyond the pale.

Agent spills details about relationship with Santonio Holmes
By Zack Meisel

Published: Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Former Ohio State wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes returned Monday night from a four-game suspension following a violation of the NFL substance abuse policy.

But instead of focusing on his future and his team's next opponent, Holmes on Tuesday was forced to again answer questions about his troubled past.

Sports Illustrated reported that Holmes was one of many college football players asked to accept money from former agent Josh Luchs.

Holmes told Luchs that he was already taking money from a different agent, Luchs said.

In a phone interview with The Lantern, Luchs said he wasn't the first to contact Holmes while the receiver was at OSU.

"That wasn't a typical situation. I was basically shut down immediately with the response being that he was basically getting taken care of by somebody else," said Luchs, who also represented former OSU running back Maurice Clarett. "So I just took it as I was too late for the dance. But, obviously, as I progressed on, I wasn't going to participate in that stuff anymore.

"He was already involved, so it was very refreshing for him to be so forthright and man-to-man," Luchs said. "I appreciate him not wasting my time."

Santonio Holmes: Allegations I got paid are false
By Arthur Staple

Holmes, who was named by former agent Josh Luchs in a Sports Illustrated story as having been paid by another, unnamed agent while at Ohio State, denied ever being paid or having met Luchs.

"I don't know him, I never met him, I don't care to know him," Holmes said today. "The allegations made were false. It's something that was thrown out there to further tarnish my career."

I agree. Gun to my head, I'd say Santonio took money. But this writer just published a book accusing Ohio State/Clark Kellogg of recruiting violations - so I'm a bit skeptical.

Um, read the whole article before you try to say they're just after OSU. The Holmes part was just a little part of it, actually it was merely a sentence or two, but since he's a current player others are gonna start talking about it.

Anyway, the whole article itself was a great read and many players confirmed taking money from the agent who confessed to this, and many confirmed to meetings and other gifts but Holmes didn't take any money from him, he told the agent that he was getting money from a different agent.

Santonio Holmes denies SI story

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Santonio Holmes didn't play the no comment card when asked about a recent Sports Illustrated article that contends he admitted to taking money from an agent while in college.

On Wednesday in front of his locker, Holmes denied the allegations.

"I had no recognition of it until I was contacted by my agent and by PR," Holmes said. "It was probably something thrown out there to further tarnish my career. But everything happens for a reason. The allegations are false that were made by this guy, whoever this reporter is who said that I took money. It's all false."

Actually, apparently on Mike and Mike the same agent said that he wasn't talking about Santonio Holmes when he was being interviewed, he was talking about another Holmes, and the SI writer wrote it wrong.

What he actually said...

"Earlier you had said that I had paid Santonio Holmes and I never did. I met Santonio Holmes once, he was kind enough to tell me not to waste my time because he had an arrangement elsewhere and at that time I wasn't offering up money to players because I hadn't done it since 1999. So I just wanted to set the record straight."

"It was another player named Holmes, but not Santonio."

So what was in the SI article still stands.

This agent who says he met Holmes outside the WHAC.. he was on Mike & Mike yesterday saying he didn't pay anyone after 1999.. so what was he doing at the WHAC offering Holmes money?

That's what I was wondering, too. So this guy simply introduced himself to Holmes (without any mention of money, allegedly), and Holmes voluntarily started talking about how he's getting paid by another agent? Not likely.

Well Santonio hasn't exactly been the "darling of the media' with his multiple past incidents, i.e. violation of the substance abuse policy, disorderly conduct, sued for assault and battery, domestic violence, etc. And yes, I realize he only has himself to blame for these actions.

I'm sure he has done a lot of "positive/good stuff" in his life too; however, I can see how he may be annoyed at the media for (what he may perceive as) always harping on the negatives. Especially if the most recent accusations are false.
