WR/RB Lamaar "Flash" Thomas (transfer to New Mexico)

I'd rather have five yards than a turnover.

I'm not arguing with you, I definitely see your point of view and understand it. :tongue2:

True, but lately Ray Small has been THIS close to making a big mistake. He's done a whole lot of catching over the shoulder, not calling fair catches, etc.

I think it shows guts, sometimes. But it's high risk, low reward for Small. If he was going to do it and bust a big one, it could be considered worth it. Small is fast, but he's not going to juke anyone from what I've seen. I know Thomas bobbled his first kick return, but he seems to understand the "getting up field part". I thought he was going to break that last kick return.

Just saying. I'd rather have Small and Lamaar Thomas returning punts. I like the 2 returners deep, but Hartline doesn't scare anyone.

Let Flash handle PR and KR. Too me he definately has that big play potential that Ginn had.

Why don't we utilize him more on offense? Let the blitz come through and dump it off to Flash. He is a gamer yet we don't use him.

He can be an offensive force.

I don't know if I would say "He can be an offensive force" but he definitely has the potential, like you said.

You have to earn playing time in practice and earn more playing time in the playing time you earned in practice. Make sense? Maybe.

With the limited playing time I've seen, however, he is our most explosive option outside of Pryor and Beanie.

Have you had enough of Ray letting the ball bounce in front of him and giving up 10-15 more yards on the roll?

Perhaps, if the blocking were better, he wouldn't need to let it bounce. He may not be perfect, but i'll take a 13 pr avg any day of the week. He's light years better than the brians.

Thomas has been unbelievable on kr. If he can do it on pr, too, then no reason not to let him try.

 How does the blocking keep him from running up to field the punt? It might stop him from returning it, but that's not what 27 is railing upon.

He can't get to every kick, but there are too many that land 5-10 yards in front of him and bounce for another 10. Fielding those would save a good chunk of field position.
He may not be perfect
You have to hold your breath on every punt he fields. He bobbles too many and fields many others he should opt to fair catch (instead he's drilled instantaneously after fielding it).

It's a helluva lot easier running up to catch a ball without defenders in your face. That's not hard to figure out.:shake:

Sure. You think there just might be orders from the staff on which ones to stay away from? I'll say yes. Again, this is where better blocking would give him more time to possibly field more of them.

Why? How many fumbles has he lost this season on punt returns? You do realize he's leading the B10 in punt returns.

Are you just looking at stats or are you watching the games?

Small has made several questionable decisions on punt returns in every game he's been back there. I don't know about you, but I let out a sigh of relief every time he fields one cleanly.

It's about effort and attitude as well. I'm sure the coaches don't care if Ted Ginn or whatever, but if you end up circus catching punts every single freakin time and make other mental errors, you are going to sit on the bench period.

On the topic of Lamaar, it was very enjoyable for me to watch him actually see seems and hit the little bastards like a Paul Byrd fastball. That's something I haven't seen the past two seasons with any regularity, yeah he had the one muff, that's a freshman mistake, wanting to take it to the house, but Mo "I played under Woody Hayes" Wells muffed his one this week that started us in terrible field position down by four, do we lose if we get a better return, the world may never know.

Flash has definately given me something to be hopeful about, a return touchdown.

(an aside, I kid with Mo, he's been a great team player and Buckeye, I'm sure he'll be a success in life)

Brutus1, do you feel that Small is reliable in fielding punts? Or is the reward simply worth the risk?

The ball has bobbled in his hands during a fair catch a number of times, and his fumble against Michigan State should have cost OSU 3-7 points. Austin Spitler made an unbelievable play to recover that football.

and he's failed to field a lot of kicks with no defender within 5-10 yards.

Agreed. He has made a number of twisting and unsettling catches back there, and still dares the defense without a fair catch too often for my taste.
