, but Mo "I played under Woody Hayes" Wells muffed his one this week that started us in terrible field position down by four, do we lose if we get a better return, the world may never know.

(an aside, I kid with Mo, he's been a great team player and Buckeye, I'm sure he'll be a success in life)

You uninformed dope. Mo's first year coincided with Earle Bruce's first year. He never played under Woody. Get your facts straight. :shake:

Brutus1, do you feel that Small is reliable in fielding punts? Or is the reward simply worth the risk? The ball has bobbled in his hands during a fair catch a number of times, and his fumble against Michigan State should have cost OSU 3-7 points. Austin Spitler made an unbelievable play to recover that football.
and he's failed to field a lot of kicks with no defender within 5-10 yards.Agreed. He has made a number of twisting and unsettling catches back there, and still dares the defense without a fair catch too often for my taste.

j-dub,
at this point, I think the reward is worth the risk. Until someone can do better (perhaps LT), I'm happy with him. Sure, I'd rather he not make circus catches or bobble balls, but when he does make the catch, he's a pretty darn good returner.

I wonder how he is coached on punt returns. I agree that no one in their right mind is coaching him to catch balls over his shoulder.

On a good note, at least he doesn't return punts like Saine returns kicks.

Back to LT. Maybe he'll get a shot returning punts in the future.

Flash seems to have adjusted to the college game. He is seeing the field, and seeing things develop, so he is playing faster now.

Ray's issue seems to be judging the ball / depth perception. Either that or he's taking his eyes off the ball too late.
I wonder how Torrence would do.

Id perfer someone who could make a fair catch. I really am confused as to why Small is still back there. He has an uncanny ability to bobble the ball at crucial times. LT looked good in my opinion. If the coaching staff is confident he isn't going to make a stupid mistake, put him in.

bingo and you forgot Wells so called catch at the 3 yard line and thank god it bounced off of him to out of bounds. That would have been great, PSU has the ball at our 5. Its Flash time now. I hope

Is it me or does this guy seem like he's on the verge of breaking one sooner than later? Everytime he touches the ball it seems like he's one block away from breaking it and overall he just looks more dangerous with the ball then our past kick returners.

good return men all having something in common....fearlessness.

I don't think Saine returned with fearlessness.

Lamar hits his top gear immediately and looks for openings. The same way Cribbs does it. I think it is very difficult to set up good returns by waiting on your blocking and taking hesitant steps. It's not the same thing as setting up a screen pass...not when 11 guys are running full speed down the field to take your head off. You have to be willing to make them scared of tackling you by running full speed back at them, and making them cautious of leaving their lanes for fear of a huge return.
