Agreed.

Is it just me, maybe the extra number on his jersey, or something else, but he looks like he hit the weights pretty hard. He just looked...bigger.

i agree and i also thought he resembled robiskie out there. maybe it was the just the double digit number starting with "8" though.

Ohio State's Ray Small has a new number, new attitude

COLUMBUS When Ray Small arrived for spring football at Ohio State earlier this year, he thought the jersey hanging in his locker was a joke. Small, who wore No. 4 last season, at first thought the No. 82 was as bogus as a state trooper's speed-test exam.

So he did what any self-respecting wide receiver would do. He went to the head coach and asked what was up with the number mixup.

No mixup, Head Coach Jim Tressel said.

"He just said that's your new number," Small said. "I was like, 'OK.' "

Going from a single digit to double digits is a demotion of sorts for a college wide receiver; the lower numbers are coveted by skill players.

Then again, since Small was in Tressel's doghouse, at least he still had a number.

What did the speedy receiver from Glenville High School do to get there?

"It wasn't nothing bad, like I hit an old lady or anything like that," Small said. "I was attending a class, but I wasn't coming on time. Tress is big on being on time. I was lollygagging and getting there when I wanted. He told me I couldn't do that.

"When I first got to college and coming out of high school I thought, 'I'm a grown man. I get to do this and do that.' I figured it was a lecture, and I could get there when I felt like it and get the notes here and there. Tress sat me down and talked to me about it. He said it was important to him."

RENEE SAUER | dispatch
Ray Small sprints down the sideline against Youngstown State on Saturday. He averaged 19.8 yards on four punt returns, with a 45-yarder.

Ray Small cut upfield and burst to the left sideline. The fresh air rushing past his face probably smelled like long-lost freedom. Small's punt return Saturday was heavy with symbolism. After a humiliating spring and summer spent in Ohio State coach Jim Tressel's doghouse, Small finally was outrunning his troubles.
Well, mostly. Youngstown State cornerback Jabari Scott tracked down Small and tackled him after a 45-yard runback.
"It's the first game, still kind of winded a little bit," Small said afterward. "I was kind of mad I got caught."
Still, Small was ecstatic to be playing again, as evidenced by the wide grin he wore in the postgame interview room.
Tressel never said what Small's transgression was, referring to him being in "disfavor" and "trying to get back in good graces."
Whatever it was, it prompted Tressel to strip Small of his number (4) and replace it with 82. He was held out of much of spring practice, doing conditioning and running, instead.
In the team's 2008 media guide, Small is listed with the walk-ons, as if the coaches weren't sure he would successfully complete his penance.
Small wasn't sure, either.

Thats a great article on the Ray Small situation for the last 6months. Great to hear that he's taken responsibility for everything that went wrong(and im not even sure we know what exactly happened) and has been able to put it behind him while Tress has given him another opportunity. I especially like that he's willing to help the younger guys and realizes that he's been blessed to be a Buckeye even after whats gone on while he's been here. Here's to a great season for Ray Ray!

Couldn't agree more. With his head and his heart in the right place, this could be his break out year.

Good luck Ray! Here's to your best season yet!

Man, did Ray step up at the right time or what? I personally love watching him run, reminds me of TGII in some ways. I can't wait until he breaks a kickoff return for a score. As a wide receiver, he's gaining ground too. A little competition is a healthy thing.

Why did Ray's number get changed from 4 to 82? I didn't catch it when ESPN spoke about it, I was thrown off by the constant stuttering of Pam and them showing laurinaitis's picture with trapasso's stat line.
