WR Jeremiah Smith (All B1G, B1G Frosh/WR of Year, All-American, 2025 Rose Bowl Off MVP, National Champion)

Controversial former Buckeyes player sends message to Jeremiah Smith about his future at Ohio State

Former Buckeyes running back Maurice Clarett, who tried to challenge the NFL draft eligibility rule 20 years ago, had some advice this week for Smith about his future in Columbus.

(Clarett was suspended by Ohio State for the 2003 season after his terrific true freshman season -- 1,237 rushing yards in 2002).

Clarett doesn't think Smith should even think about challenging the NFL draft eligibility rules. Instead, he thinks he should just "enjoy" his next two seasons at Ohio State.

"I wouldn't advise him to try to challenge [the NFL], push or do anything I tried to do," said Clarett to CBS Sports in regards to Smith. "You'll be able to make money there. Just enjoy it all, man."

It's hard to argue against Clarett's advice. Smith might be physically ready to play in the NFL right now, but developing (mentally and physically) over the next two seasons will ensure that he's set-up for long term success in the NFL.

And let's not forget that Smith is earning plenty of cash via his NIL deals (Smith was reportedly offered $4.5 million to leave Ohio State).

Smith only gets once chance to be a Buckeye. These next two seasons in Columbus will likely be some of the most enjoyable years of his football journey. The NFL isn't going anywhere -- he'll be ready to dominate the league starting in 2027.

Just sayin': Definitely good advice from someone who actually learned it "the hard way".....

Ohio State Buckeyes WR Generating Major Heisman Buzz

An Ohio State Buckeyes wideout is already generating major 2025 Heisman buzz.

Heading into the 2024 college football season, everyone was expecting a great freshman year from Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Even though there were high expectations already, no one could have seen coming what Smith ended up doing.

Smith ended up being a massive part of the Ohio State national championship run.

When all was said and done, Smith ended up catching 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged a stunning 17.3 yards per reception in year one.

After that kind of a season, there is even bigger hype and higher expectations for Smith heading into year two in 2025.

CBS Sports has shared the new FanDuel odds for the projected Heisman Trophy candidates in 2025. Smith ended up being listed No. 5 on the list with +1200 odds.

"Though he was a true freshman, many called Smith the best player in college football last season. It's hard to argue with that assessment," they wrote.

"He emerged as the Alpha in a loaded Ohio State wide receiver room from the moment he stepped foot on campus. He set a Big Ten single-season freshman record with 15 touchdowns receiving and compiled 1,315 yards through the air (fourth in the FBS). He did some of his best work in the College Football Playoff, with 381 yards and five touchdowns in Ohio State's four-game march to the national title. It's hard to fathom how he'll perform as he continues to grow."

How much can Smith really improve in 2025? His numbers from his freshman year will place that bar extremely high.

A lot will depend on the Buckeyes' new quarterback. Whether that quarterback ends up being Julian Sayin, Tavien St. Clair, or Lincoln Kienholz, Smith will need them to get him the football.

“He’s Not to Be Messed With”: NFL Combine Defenders Who Played Ohio State Last Season Took Notice of Jeremiah Smith

154035_h.jpg

Omarr Norman-Lott couldn’t remember Jeremiah Smith’s name off the top of his head, but the former Tennessee defensive tackle certainly didn’t forget facing Ohio State’s star wide receiver in this past season’s College Football Playoff.

Asked Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine who stood out to him from the Buckeyes in Ohio State’s 42-17 win over Tennessee in December, Norman-Lott initially said his answer was “the whole team,” admitting that the Volunteers “got blown out the water.” But it was Smith, the then-freshman wideout who caught six passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns in Ohio State’s first-round CFP win, who impressed Norman-Lott most of all.

“He's not to be messed with … You're like rendered powerless,” Norman-Lott said with a laugh. “You're doing anything you can to stop him, but it's a man vs. man game sometimes, and that day he was the better man.”

Norman-Lott was far from the only combine participant who went up against Smith last season and came away recognizing that Smith is a special player.

Iowa defensive back Sebastian Castro got a firsthand look at Smith’s ability in just his fifth game as a Buckeye as the freshman wide receiver caught four passes for 89 yards, including a one-handed catch for a 4-yard touchdown, which prompted Castro to give Smith props in the moment and is a play Castro still remembers more than four months later.

“He's definitely an exceptional athlete,” Castro said. “You can tell, one of the plays where they just threw it up to him in the back of the end zone, he had just stuck out his arm to create separation and caught the ball with one hand. He’s a really talented kid.”

I wonder if he'll get returns this year at some point as well. He'll get receiving and rushing TDs, but he'll need a couple from elsewhere to get the Heisman.

He's already going to be the best player in the country, along with Caleb Downs, so that's not in question. Just need to fill the stat sheet completely. Maybe a TD pass too
