WR Jalin Marshall (Edmonton Elks)

Per Jalin, his TD at Rutgers was a designed pass to Thomas, but Barrett broke the play with the pop pass when it was supposed to be a handoff. Marshall says he realized he couldn't pass the ball.

"We had been practicing it all week and J.T. had been handing it off to me, so I knew if he didn't hand it off to me, that I would have to run it because it was a forward pass," Marshall said. "So when he didn't hand it to me, I know football enough to where I knew i couldn't throw it. So I acted like I was going to throw it and let the defense pursue."

Smart play for Marshall. That's how veterans react to unplanned circumstances during games, but he was a little disappointed. Remember, Marshall was a quarterback in high school.

"I was joking all week that I was going to throw it and that I was going to make something happen, so I wanted to throw it," he said. "I'm a quarterback at heart."

He had to run it. Had no other choice, otherwise it would have been flagged.
I'm very curious to see if they come back to that play. If Barrett tosses it straight up, or mildly towards himself, when they run that play next time, the defense will have scouted it and will crash down on him, ignoring the fact that the new flip was a lateral.

I'd have to watch the play again, but it didn't look like anybody was open.

Didn't matter really. It was a heads up play by Jalin not to throw it. Barrett pop passed it to him. If Jalin had thrown it, it would have been another forward pass. But Im not sure if he did have anyone open.

I hope so. I think its a perfect red zone play if the linebackers are spread out enough or crashing down for the blitz. Otherwise, it could result in a pick on a zone coverage. I think they will revisit it, but probably not against Minnesota or Illinois. Likely something saved for a bigger game when needed, much like the Spencer pass against Bama.

I think the next version of that play has JT going out for the pass.

Sounds like an ex-QB talking. That was still a very fun play to watch.
