WR Emeka Egbuka (All B1G, All-American)

EMEKA EGBUKA NAMED FINALIST FOR PAUL HORNUNG AWARD, WHICH HONORS COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S MOST VERSATILE PLAYER

Emeka Egbuka is one of the most versatile players in college football.

That’s why he was named Thursday as one of four finalists for the Paul Hornung Award, which honors college football’s most versatile player.

Egbuka has caught 49 passes for 794 yards and seven touchdowns this season while playing both in the slot and outside in Ohio State’s receiving corps. He’s been a weapon when used by the Buckeyes on running plays, gaining 80 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries. He’s also been the Buckeyes’ primary punt returner, gaining 77 yards on nine returns, and began the year as Ohio State’s kickoff returner before those duties were reassigned to Chip Trayanum and now Xavier Johnson.

The other finalists for the award are Oregon State running back/linebacker Jack Colletto, Alabama running back/returner Jahmyr Gibbs and Clemson running back/returner Will Shipley.

Egbuka would be the first Buckeye to win the Paul Hornung Award if he is selected as this year’s recipient.

Fans can vote for Egbuka to win the award at the Paul Hornung Award’s official website. One vote is permitted every 24 hours, and voting will close Dec. 4. The award winner will be announced Dec. 7.

ON EMEKA EGBUKA
  • "Emeka has done a lot for us. Not having Jaxon (Smith-Njigba) available has thrust him into situations he wasn't expecting this season."
  • Day said Egbuka is "well-deserving" of being nominated as a semifinalist for the Paul Hornung Award, given to the most versatile player in college football.
  • "A big part of Emeka's game is his versatility and speed, but it's also his toughness and blocking."
ON EGUBKA, MARVIN HARRISON JR.
  • “You don’t realize that they’re still sophomores. They’re so mature.”
  • "Marvin has really grown into becoming a great receiver and one of the best receivers in America."
  • Day said Harrison has set a tremendous example for the other receivers with his work ethic and desire to win. He noted that Harrison is still young, making his leadership even more impressive. He thinks players like Kyion Grayes, Caleb Burton, Kaleb Brown and Kojo Antwi have learned much from Harrison in a short time.
  • On Emeka Egbuka’s ability to run the ball: “One thing we recognized with Emeka was his strength and his power and his size. One of the things that Meka brings to the table is his power and his ability to run and his versatility and his strength.” Day compares him to the NFL’s Deebo Samuel. “He’s been a warrior for us this year.”
