COLUMBUS ? The Ohio State coaching staff released its spring depth chart this week, and there weren't many surprises.
Pretty much everyone who has been practicing in a given spot this spring was listed as such.
Mike Adams is listed as starting left tackle, where he has been practicing all spring. Etienne Sabino is listed as first-string SAM linebacker, just where he's been all spring. And Ohrian Johnson is at starting safety next to Jermale Hines, which is no deviation from where he has lined up this month.
The only surprise might be sophomore receiver Duron Carter being listed as the team's No. 3 receiver, despite having not suited up for the Buckeyes since last regular season. Carter was held back from participating in the Rose Bowl victory over Oregon for academic reasons, and is also idle this spring.
Senior Taurian Washington is listed as the No. 4 receiver, followed by redshirt freshmen Chris Fields (Harvey) and James Jackson.
Assistant head coach and receivers coach Darrell Hazell said the Carter situation is a "day-by-day thing," and that he believes the son of former OSU All-American Cris Carter is getting his work done in the classroom and weight room. Even if he isn't in uniform this spring.
"Hopefully he gets back and is in the right frame of mind to help us," Hazell said.
Senior Dane Sanzenbacher said Carter is "staying positive," but admitted the two don't talk much about football when they talk. Junior DeVier Posey took things a step further.
"Just your freshman year in college is rough," Posey said. "You're away from home and trying to find out who you really are. Just basically trying to get your priorities straight.
"Giving what he was given, with his last name and the responsibilities that come along with that, I think he has handled it OK. It's rough on him, but he's learning from his mistakes. I know he feels a lot of remorse and wants to get out here as soon as he can."
