WR Duron Carter (Official Thread)

Dryden;1651331; said:
The WRs will get more separation when TP has total command of the offense. Posey, Sanz, and Carter know how to run routes. Hartline and Robo didn't suddenly "forget" what they did between '07 and their less productive '08 campaigns (when everyone complained that they couldn't get separation either).

...and other comments about separation and the importance of speed...

Gonzo, Robo and Hartline benefitted from the attention that had to be paid to Ginn and Holmes.

The absence of speed w/o Ginn played out in the 07 - 08 games, especially the first 07 game.

I saw Duron and his dad Chris at the Ohio State-Illinois Basketball game...they were in a box in the Hunington Club section and were walking out during half time....barely recognized Duron without his dreadlocks

Cutting the dreadlocks is pretty symbolic. Shows Duron wants to move on and turn over a new leaf.

Excited for what this young man can do on the field and in the classroom next year.

Or it could "just" mean that he wants to try a new look. He will be an outstanding student. He just got a little overwhelmed like most freshman. Thus, he has learned how important time management is to him as a student-athlete.

Missing personnel: Receiver Duron Carter and defensive end Jonathan Newsome. Jim Tressel did not specify a reason, but said they both were in similar situations. That is probably an academic issue, as Carter was ineligible for the Rose Bowl. My guess is Tressel is having them sit out spring as a means of emphasizing the importance of keeping up the grades.

Just want to say that there is no such thing as a free lunch or a free education. ANY athlete on a scholarship in any sport is taking on a minimum 40 hour work week through all but a week or two per quarter + whatever he/she decides to put into academics. The 'free' part is pure illusion.

i go to school and i work close forty hours a week. plus i have to pay my own way.

they get a free education

Hey bro...I went the same route as you, but trust me they pay indeed. Don't forget the amount of physical abuse they take and the constant potential injury that they are subject to. I lived with two football players my junior & senior years and though I was paying for my school...trust me, they were paying another price. I've trained for triathlons and these guys made me tired just living with them. It never stops. I was barely home to ever see them, but believe me, these football players earn every cent and then some that they get from the university...easy classes or not.

Ohio State notes: Idle Carter is No. 3 receiver (with video)

COLUMBUS ? The Ohio State coaching staff released its spring depth chart this week, and there weren't many surprises.

Pretty much everyone who has been practicing in a given spot this spring was listed as such.

Mike Adams is listed as starting left tackle, where he has been practicing all spring. Etienne Sabino is listed as first-string SAM linebacker, just where he's been all spring. And Ohrian Johnson is at starting safety next to Jermale Hines, which is no deviation from where he has lined up this month.

The only surprise might be sophomore receiver Duron Carter being listed as the team's No. 3 receiver, despite having not suited up for the Buckeyes since last regular season. Carter was held back from participating in the Rose Bowl victory over Oregon for academic reasons, and is also idle this spring.

Senior Taurian Washington is listed as the No. 4 receiver, followed by redshirt freshmen Chris Fields (Harvey) and James Jackson.

Assistant head coach and receivers coach Darrell Hazell said the Carter situation is a "day-by-day thing," and that he believes the son of former OSU All-American Cris Carter is getting his work done in the classroom and weight room. Even if he isn't in uniform this spring.

"Hopefully he gets back and is in the right frame of mind to help us," Hazell said.

Senior Dane Sanzenbacher said Carter is "staying positive," but admitted the two don't talk much about football when they talk. Junior DeVier Posey took things a step further.

"Just your freshman year in college is rough," Posey said. "You're away from home and trying to find out who you really are. Just basically trying to get your priorities straight.

"Giving what he was given, with his last name and the responsibilities that come along with that, I think he has handled it OK. It's rough on him, but he's learning from his mistakes. I know he feels a lot of remorse and wants to get out here as soon as he can."

Teammate: Duron Carter hurt by his name

The absence of receiver Duron Carter because of continuing academic issues has been a big topic in spring practice.

Yesterday, receivers coach Darrell Hazell said Carter's status was "day to day," which does not mean he could be back in practice any day -- I think that ship has sailed, pre-determined by Jim Tressel prior to spring drills.

I found receiver DeVier Posey's thoughts on Carter to be interesting. Here they are, and then I'll add my two cents:

"He's definitely doing good," Posey said. "I feel like a guy like that, just your freshman year in college just for any college student is rough _ you're away from home and you're trying to find out who you really are and the things you do, and basically just getting your priorities straight.

"And for a guy to come in and to be given what he was given just with his last name, and the responsibilities that come with that, I felt like he handled it OK, but it was kind of rough on him. It's hard to focus on things.

"But he's learning from his mistakes, and I know he feels a lot of remorse from it and he wants to get back out here as soon as he can."

My thoughts: Posey was stating the obvious when he talked about Carter trying to live up to the family name, given Cris Carter's OSU and NFL career.

But I thought it was interesting to hear Posey say, "to be given what he was given just with his last name."

Receiver Duron Carter wasn't in uniform for Ohio State's spring game Saturday, same as for the Rose Bowl on Jan.1, and sources provide conflicting information over whether his academic issues are being rectified.

Carter, son of OSU great Cris Carter, worked his way into the three-man rotation last season while working himself into an academic hole. There was a chance he would be eligible for spring drills, but he was ruled out at the last minute because of an academic concern that cropped up at the end of winter quarter.

Different sources say that he is, a) working hard to restore his academic standing, or b) doing a lot of what got him into trouble in the first place - not doing a lot of work.

His father has been in town frequently this spring trying to get him to focus on his academics.
