WR Devin Smith (National Champion)

Best game I've seen this young man play! Loved the effort in winning those 50/50 balls!
Devin looked like he took a back seat to Thomas when Barrett took over. I don't know if how that relationship works with QBs and Receivers. I just looked like Miller favored Smith and Barrett favored Thomas for whatever reason. Smith looked like he was playing angry last night and wanted it more than the other guy.

The MSU game was probably the best of Smith's career. Smith's problem is that he's never been a complete receiver, but for some reason he was last night.

Smith now has 26 career TD passes, good for 3rd place in Buckeye history behind Cris Carter (27) and David Boston (34).

Smith is averaging 25.6 yards per catch this season. The school record is 27.6 yards per catch by Cedric Anderson (20 receptions for 552 yards) in 1982.

Smith is averaging 19.4 yards per catch for his career (110 receptions for 2,136 yards), which is good for 4th place at Ohio State behind Cedric Anderson with 21.3 yards per catch (80 receptions for 1,707 yards); Doug Donley with 21.2 yards per catch (106 receptions for 2,252 yards); and Terry Glenn with 21.2 yards per catch (79 receptions for 1,677 yards)
Didn't think it would take a month to do so after catching his 26th in East Lansing, but with his 3 TDs yesterday Devin Smith now sits in 2nd place in career touchdown receptions with 29.

I think the reason is that the long ball is Cardale's strength, as is Devin's strength. Also somewhat related to the Badgers trying to cover Devin with a safety in certain formations.

It seems like JT and Thomas have been in the same area of the depth chart and both red shirted last year (though it was Thomas' 2nd year). You could see in the Spring Game that JT and Thomas have great chemistry, trust, and timing... so I wasn't surprised at all that he kind of became our go-to receiver. Cardale has been here longer (same class as Brax, but grey shirted and then red shirted) so it's not surprising that he's probably worked with Devin Smith and Spencer more.
Of course Cardale's arm and Devin's penchant for "only scoring touchdowns" is a match made in heaven for both. Thomas has speed, but I think he's more of a possession receiver for us - he reminds me a lot of Gonzo for some reason.

This 100%. And good news is that Bama DBs are particularly vulnerable in that area, so we could really exploit this matchup if Cardale and Devin are on their games again.

If Dontre is back, I think he's the biggest asset. They are going to be sniffing out Devin wherever he goes for sure. Would love to see him get deep a couple of times though. Couple of big hitters will keep Bama pressing to keep scoring which is what we need.
