Ohio State notebook: Smith is becoming one of Miller?s favorite targets

Ohio State freshman Devin Smith hauls in his second touchdown of the game, a 17-yard fade pattern over Colorado defensive back Greg Henderson in the third quarter.
The first time the Braxton Miller-to-Devin Smith connection showed promise was in Ohio State?s summer camp for high-school seniors in 2010.
Miller, a big-time quarterback recruit, was already committed to OSU, while Smith was hoping to net a scholarship offer.
That came hours later, and now it?s hard to imagine the two freshmen without each other. Miller made his first college start yesterday, and he threw two touchdown passes to Smith as the Buckeyes beat Colorado 37-17.
That makes three career touchdown passes for Miller, all to Smith.
?He gets good position and he catches the ball,? is the way Miller described his affinity for throwing to Smith.
The two have had each other?s number since the camp more than a year ago.
?We exchanged cellphone numbers and started keeping up with each other,? Smith said.
Now they are connecting in front of 105,000. Smith?s TDs against Colorado came on a 32-yard post-cut in the first quarter and on a 17-yard fade to the left side of the end zone in the third.
Miller said he liked both of them. Which was Smith?s favorite?
?I like both of them, but if I had to pick one, I would probably pick the fade,? he said. ?That?s just because (Colorado cornerback Greg Henderson) was tight on me a little bit, and I had to make a big play, which I did.?
I think he's now established himself as the third WR along with Posey and Philly Brown, when he returns. WR has been a real weakness so far this season. Yet, when we have those three out there in (hopefully) two weeks, it's automatically a strength. We just need to get through next week with a W, and I'm starting to feel a bit better about our in-conference prospects this season.utgrad73;1999200; said:It's good to see Devin stepping up as a WR. He has the speed and the ability to create separation. When Posey returns in two weeks, this pair of WRs will create havoc in the secondary. Braxton's decisions as QB will be not where to put the ball but which of his quality receivers to pass the ball to. Thanks to Devin for the great game. More to come...:osu:
Ohio State spotlight: WR Devin Smith

Partly because of his own efforts and mainly out of necessity, Devin Smith has been on the fast track to more playing time as a freshman wide receiver for Ohio State, and assistant coach Dick Tressel said he is stepping up to the challenge.
?I think Devin is getting close to being comfortable enough with what?s going on to use all of his talents,? Dick Tressel said. ?He?s not all the way there.?
But Smith and fellow freshman receiver Evan Spencer, who scored the only touchdown in last week?s loss to Michigan State, can count on their frequent player minutes continuing to increase tonight when the Buckeyes play at Nebraska. Weird things keep happening in the receiver room.
For starters, the Buckeyes knew going into the season senior DeVier Posey was going to be suspended the first five games. This was supposed to be his big return week, but now due to another NCAA rules transgression, he is out indefinitely.
Corey ?Philly? Brown, one of the two starters in the opener, has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain since early in game two. He is expected to return tonight, but his playing time might be limited. Verlon Reed, the other starter the first five games, is now lost for the season due to a major knee injury suffered last week against MSU.
That meant at the start of this week?s practice the three primary receivers available were sophomore Chris Fields, Smith and Spencer. Dick Tressel thinks Smith, with three TD catches already, especially is becoming more responsible by the minute.
?That guy is fast, he?s a talented guy, but every rep you get, every chance you get out there you get more comfortable with the scene, with your abilities,? Tressel said. ?And pretty soon he is going to be playing at the top of his ability. You guys have already seen some big plays (from him) and he pretty capable. It?s exciting to see guys progress.?
