MASSILLON ?

Devin Smith was merely an observer to football practice Monday. Standing off on the sideline inside Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, the former Massillon Tiger All-Ohioan watched as his old high school team went through its first day of two-a-days.

On Friday, Smith no longer will be on the sideline. Instead, he?s going to be right in the thick of it in Columbus as he prepares for his sophomore season at Ohio State.

Smith?s second year with the Buckeyes, however, is going to be a lot different than his first. At least, it will based upon who?s calling the shots as the head coach, as two-time national championship head coach Urban Meyer prepares for his first season.

?He?s been a fiery guy,? Smith said Monday. ?This past summer, he?s been in contact with all his players, making sure that we?re really working hard and getting ready for camp this fall.?

When Smith signed with Ohio State in February 2011, Jim Tressel was the head coach. He lost his job due to his role in NCAA rules violations, and defensive coordinator Luke Fickell was elevated into the interim head-coaching role, going 6-7 with a Gator Bowl loss to Florida.

Meyer took over full time after that Gator Bowl loss last January, and Smith can tell the difference already.

?They all have a sense of urgency, but with Urban, it?s all about getting better each and every single day,? Smith said. ?Now that Urban is here, he wants us to put that all behind and show the world what we really are. We?re a new and improved football team and every single member of this team is ready.?

I can't wait to see devin in year 2 at college. He impressed as a true frosh despite the circumstances. I think he'll ball out this year and get all conference. Can't wait for the season to start

Ohio State's Smith anxious for next step

He caught a touchdown pass in his first college game and later caught the game-winner in Ohio State's biggest win of the season.

But in retrospect, Devin Smith saw himself much more as a secret than secret weapon in 2011. And now that the slate's been wiped clean and new coach Urban Meyer has put out a very public call for offensive weapons, Smith sees big things ahead for himself and the Ohio State offense.

"The (down) parts of last year honestly made me work harder because I didn't know when I was going to get those opportunities," Smith said. "I've put in the work. I'm anxious. And I think this offense can be great ? not just for me but for the other receivers, for Jordan Hall when he gets healthy, and for all of us.

"We're going to make it work. This offense can get us to the places we want to be."

The Buckeyes' new spread, up-tempo offense will usually feature at least three wide receivers on the field at a time, and Smith has been working since January to keep himself in that group. He knows he fits athletically and was able to build a rapport with classmate and quarterback Braxton Miller, and Smith also knows that every impression counts.

On the first day of full-squad camp last week, Meyer mentioned Smith as a player he saw running the kind of deep route ? with the kind of speed and intention ? he wants to see.

"It was ridiculous," Meyer said, fully complimentary.

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer often uses two words ? ?functional? and ?non-functional? ? to evaluate his team and players. The Buckeyes? wide receivers have been the owners of a ?non-functional? designation since spring practice.

A single moment on the first day of practice helped send the receivers on the road to being a functional group, and it was sophomore Devin Smith?s route heard ?round fall camp that appears to have turned the tide.

Meyer?s dissatisfaction with his receivers was evident during the Buckeyes? April 21 Spring Game, during which sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller and redshirt junior quarterback Kenny Guiton combined for 449 yards on 57 pass attempts. That pass-heavy strategy, Meyer said after the game, was intended as a test for what he called ?one of the worst passing teams in America a year ago.?

OSU?s first-year coach might very well have maintained that opinion of his offense until the team?s Aug. 6 fall camp practice when Smith went streaking on a ?nine route? down the field that forced Meyer to reconsider.

?Yeah, I remember the route ? a little fade route,? Smith said after practice Tuesday. ?You know, Braxton threw it right on the money and I just ran.?
