WR DeVier Posey (2017 Grey Cup Champion and MVP)

Rivals by relation: OSU's DeVier Posey and MSU's Greg Jones among the Big Ten's best

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The best Big Ten player from Ohio not only doesn't play for Ohio State, he doesn't even get to face Ohio State this season.

"I kind of wish that the Big Ten Championship was this year and we could play them for the Big Ten, that's what I wish," Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones said at the Big Ten meetings in Chicago before preseason camp started.

The senior linebacker, named the conference's preseason Defensive Player of the Year the last two seasons and the postseason player last year, will have to settle for trying to catch his cousin, Ohio State receiver DeVier Posey, when they get back to Cincinnati again.

"Every time he sees me, he tries to put me in a headlock," Posey said. "I say, 'Greg, keep dreaming, because you can't guard me and you can't cover me.' I always mess with him because he has that linebacker temper that's really short."

Former Lancer Posey, Ohio State prep for "The U"

When the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes storm the field Saturday to face Miami, LaSalle graduate DeVier Posey plans to be in the midst of all the commotion.

Over the summer, the junior receiver caught 1,500 passes a week in an attempt to be a more consistent receiving threat this season.

?Last season, I dropped a lot of passes,? said Posey. ?Didn?t make the plays I was supposed to make. I wanted to make sure that was a problem. I was overwhelmed with the playbook and all of that stuff coming in as a freshman. I needed to get back to what got me here, and that is catching the ball.?

Ohio State spotlight: DeVier Posey

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As Ohio State's primary receiver, DeVier Posey knows he will gain the attention of Miami's defense today. He also knows there might be former star players and/or a celebrity or two in Ohio Stadium watching him and his teammates just as closely.

"When you really take a step back, really look and try to grasp what's going on, it's pretty cool, man, and it's humbling," Posey said.

It not as if it would be first time, though. For example, there was the game at Southern California in 2008, Posey's freshman season.

"Denzel was on our sideline," he said, referring to actor Denzel Washington. "And LeBron (James) came to our Penn State game that year, that was the time

when I was like, 'Where am I?'

"When those types of people come to your game, you want to put on the best show for them. It allows you to get excited and (learn how) to handle those emotions. It's just a great feeling."

They would be there to watch him, quarterback Terrelle Pryor, Miami quarterback Jacory Harris and the other players compete. For 60 minutes, at least, the players will be the main attraction.

"It blows my mind that we have the opportunity to play in front of those guys, people that we look at as celebrities, people that we're in awe of," Posey said.

"To put on a show, to show football, the ultimate team game, how much hard work we put in in the two-a-days, it's kind of humbling."

IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR ... Ohio State junior wide receiver DeVier Posey will have a more personal view of this Saturday's game against Ohio University. DeVier's older brother, Julian Posey, is a starting cornerback for the Bobcats.

Tressel said that the younger Posey better win the battle, or the elder Posey will never let him hear the end of it.

"I think Julian and DeVier worked out a little bit against each other and they'll be talking trash," Tressel laughed. "Those guys talk trash to people they don't even know, I can't even imagine what they'll be doing when they face one another.

"It's going to be fun because (Julian's) a good player and he knows his brother as well as anyone. I told DeVier, I said, 'if big brother shuts you down, it's going to be a long lifetime for you.'

John Kampf of The Morning Journal writes:

Saturday will be the first time the brothers will play head-to-head, aside from video games before DeVier quit them.

?It?s going to be intense,? Posey said. ?It?s probably going to be the most intense game I?ve ever played in just because I know the guy going across from me is going to be going 120 percent every play just because he doesn?t want to get embarrassed.?

BROTHERLY SHOVE: Ohio State receiver DeVier Posey heads upfield after making a catch against the University of Miami last week. If the Hurricanes weren't enough of a challenge for DeVier, older brother Julian awaits today at cornerback for Ohio University. (Fred Squillante, Dispatch)

Years ago when DeVier Posey would square off against Julian Posey, there were no stands, the field was clear, and not even their mother was watching.

But it was tackle football, it was one against the other, Julian Posey said, and it was as real as could be.

"You always want to beat your brother," Julian said.

They went at it on that field near their grandmother's house on Teakwood Ave. in north Cincinnati, sometimes in full pads. When it first started Julian was about 7 years old, DeVier was about 5.

"It was just me at one end of the field and DP at the other," Julian said. "But it was a real football game. We'd kick off to each other, act like you took the snap and you'd run your play and the other guy would try to tackle you. You'd get four downs to get 10 yards."

Or as DeVier recalled: "It was intense."

Wow, how time flies, and how sibling rivalries can attract a crowd. They will go face to face in Ohio Stadium, DeVier, a third-year junior and No.1 wide receiver for Ohio State, vs. Julian, a fifth-year senior and the top cornerback for Ohio University. It will be a lot like the good ol' days, except this time 100,000-plus will be watching.

"It's so mind-boggling, so crazy, that Ohio State fans and all of Ohio are going to be able to see me and him go against each other, just like we did in the backyard battles we had," DeVier said.

Julian said it's hard to explain how much it's going to mean.

"I know what it's like to work out with DP in the offseason, and I know what it's like to teach him moves, and the tricks of the trade," Julian said. "But in a game-type atmosphere, with the fans there, and the lights on to line up across from him that first time, it's going to be a moment I'll hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life."

It will be a Kodak moment for the family, their mother Julie Posey said. That is, if she can hold the camera steady. She remembers the first time they were on a field together with a lot of people watching; Julian was a sixth grader, DeVier was a fourth grader in Cincinnati, and Julian passed to his brother on what turned out to be a 60-yard touchdown play.

"And I'll remember the announcer saying 'It's Posey to Posey for a touchdown!' " Julie said. "But it's not gonna be that this time."

It's going to be Posey vs. Posey.

"It's pretty incredible," Julie said. "I don't know how many other moms would have experienced something like this, where both sons are on the field at the same time, and one is guarding the other. I have no idea how I'm gonna feel."

VIDEO: OSU NOTES: Posey brothers have some fun

COLUMBUS ? The Posey brothers ? Ohio State?s DeVier and Ohio?s Julian ? went to dinner with their mother Julie and a slew of family members after Saturday?s game.

No one knows for sure if young brother DeVier was going to be in a giving mood or not.

Not only did Ohio State?s junior receiver get the better of his older brother, a starting cornerback for the Bobcats, with a 5-catch, 62-yard performance on the field, but he also came away with some souvenirs.

?My goal was to steal all of his accessories,? DeVier said. ?One time I stole his towel. I tried to grab his wristbands and forearm bands, but I couldn?t get them.?

Julie Posey, who was clad in a half-OSU, half-OU shirt, was one of a 40-some member group of family members who attended the game. She said she was proud of how her boys played and performed. There some noticeable face-to-face jawing ? DeVier reportedly told his brother to lift some weights ? a hard stiff-arm and a few after-the-play bumps.

Not to mention the stealing.

?I can?t say he behaved himself,? Julian said with a laugh. ?The first couple plays he bumped me after the play. He tried to give me the shoulder. But that?s football and I understand that.

?He took my towel twice. After the second one I just said, ?I?m going to play without a towel.??

When asked who got the better of the battle, DeVier didn?t blink.

?You saw the scoreboard,? he said.
