BROTHERLY SHOVE: Ohio State receiver DeVier Posey heads upfield after making a catch against the University of Miami last week. If the Hurricanes weren't enough of a challenge for DeVier, older brother Julian awaits today at cornerback for Ohio University. (Fred Squillante, Dispatch)
Years ago when DeVier Posey would square off against Julian Posey, there were no stands, the field was clear, and not even their mother was watching.
But it was tackle football, it was one against the other, Julian Posey said, and it was as real as could be.
"You always want to beat your brother," Julian said.
They went at it on that field near their grandmother's house on Teakwood Ave. in north Cincinnati, sometimes in full pads. When it first started Julian was about 7 years old, DeVier was about 5.
"It was just me at one end of the field and DP at the other," Julian said. "But it was a real football game. We'd kick off to each other, act like you took the snap and you'd run your play and the other guy would try to tackle you. You'd get four downs to get 10 yards."
Or as DeVier recalled: "It was intense."
Wow, how time flies, and how sibling rivalries can attract a crowd. They will go face to face in Ohio Stadium, DeVier, a third-year junior and No.1 wide receiver for Ohio State, vs. Julian, a fifth-year senior and the top cornerback for Ohio University. It will be a lot like the good ol' days, except this time 100,000-plus will be watching.
"It's so mind-boggling, so crazy, that Ohio State fans and all of Ohio are going to be able to see me and him go against each other, just like we did in the backyard battles we had," DeVier said.
Julian said it's hard to explain how much it's going to mean.
"I know what it's like to work out with DP in the offseason, and I know what it's like to teach him moves, and the tricks of the trade," Julian said. "But in a game-type atmosphere, with the fans there, and the lights on to line up across from him that first time, it's going to be a moment I'll hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life."
It will be a Kodak moment for the family, their mother Julie Posey said. That is, if she can hold the camera steady. She remembers the first time they were on a field together with a lot of people watching; Julian was a sixth grader, DeVier was a fourth grader in Cincinnati, and Julian passed to his brother on what turned out to be a 60-yard touchdown play.
"And I'll remember the announcer saying 'It's Posey to Posey for a touchdown!' " Julie said. "But it's not gonna be that this time."
It's going to be Posey vs. Posey.
"It's pretty incredible," Julie said. "I don't know how many other moms would have experienced something like this, where both sons are on the field at the same time, and one is guarding the other. I have no idea how I'm gonna feel."
