The Lantern - Who will catch Pryor's passes?

Who will catch the first pass this spring? My money is on Posey, but the combo is really going to light things up this year and should produce many highlights. See you all at the spring game...

While I don't doubt that the Pryor/Posey combo is going to be something to behold, I also see a flash of ginn/gonzo here. Teams focusing so much on Posey that its Dane with a "quiet" big game.

OSU quarterback Terrelle Pryor will Not Attend Big Ten Kickoff luncheon.

Football: It's getting close.
The Big announced today the participants from each school at the annual Kickoff Luncheon held in Chicago which will begin two weeks from today.
Representing the Buckeyes this year will be senior offensive lineman Bryant Browning, senior defensive lineman Cameron Heyward and senior wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher.

Is it summer camp time yet? Better get the projects done around the house because my Saturdays are booked starting Sept 4th.!!

Buckeyes early risers this summer

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

No one looks forward to the alarm clock going off at 5 a.m., including Dane Sanzenbacher.

But the Ohio State senior receiver said that for members of the football team this summer, when the alarm sounded, the attitude was you hit snooze, you lose. He said there was something exhilarating about being up at the crack of dawn, about to dive into another offseason workout.

"Even though the night before you're thinking, 'Man, I've got to get up so early,' once you're up, you kind of have the feeling you've got a step on the rest of the world," Sanzenbacher said. "It feels good."

I hope Sanzo gets voted a captain. He's been a great Buckeye.

"Running the steps is very old-school, I know, but at the same time it's pretty cool," Sanzenbacher said. "That's because you get to be in the place where the games happen, and you're the only ones there. There's an inspiration to that."

One can inspire a larger group. This is why he should be a captain this year. Helping other's see what he see's is a gift. Visualize another crystal football sitting in the WHAC display case.

WR Dane Sanzenbacher: No. 12 (5-11, 180)
A limited receiver in what he can offer an NFL offense. A slot guy only who struggles to slip press coverage off the line and quickly get into his routes. However, has a real savvy about his game, knows how to set up corners, find soft spots underneath and possesses the toughness to go up and make a play on the football. Works back well toward the quarterback, consistently finding a way to uncover and can routinely act like a safety blanket over the middle of the field. However, lacks the type of burst to consistently generate much separation out of his breaks. He exhibits sneaky speed down the field, but isn?t a guy who will be able to simply outpace defensive backs in the NFL.

Impression: He is what he is. Will always be a fringe roster type guy in the NFL who might be able to endear himself to an NFL coaching staff and fill out a receiving corps, but doesn?t offer much in the form of size, speed or overall quickness.

Sanzenbacher ready for season Senior hopes hard work pays off with a special year
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

After spending most of the summer in Columbus, involved in rigorous workouts with his Ohio State teammates, former Central Catholic standout Dane Sanzenbacher slipped home to Toledo for a couple of days. After filming some promotional spots for his alma mater Thursday, Sanzenbacher was back at it - working out.

"That's part of the job description, so I don't take too many days off from it," he said. "Preparation is so important, and I don't want to ever feel like I didn't do everything I could to prepare myself for the upcoming season."

Sanzenbacher said the informal summer workouts at Ohio State are run by the seniors, with a lot of weight-lifting, running and conditioning, and then seven-on-seven drills every Sunday. He said those sessions were set up like mini practices, and the level of enthusiasm he saw displayed left him very encouraged about what could lie ahead for the Buckeyes.

"When there's no coaches out there telling you what to do, and showing up is all optional, our guys were still willing to put in a lot of extra time," Sanzenbacher said. "I was impressed with how much people were willing to work over the summer."

OSU football: Receiver has high impact, low profile
Wednesday, August 4, 2010
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CHICAGO - He has been told that he looks like actor Johnny Knoxville, singer Billie Joe Armstrong and actor Taylor Lautner.

It's a good bet that no one has approached any of those people and said, "You look like Dane Sanzenbacher."

For being a marketing major, the Ohio State senior receiver isn't doing a good job of marketing himself.

"I've been able to fly under the radar a little bit," he said.

The problem is that Sanzenbacher's best traits - working the middle of the field, toughness and blocking, to name a few - don't often land him on the highlight videos.

His three-year totals (69 catches, 931 yards, eight touchdowns) read more like one good year from former Ohio State standouts David Boston, Joey Galloway or Michael Jenkins.

He was overshadowed first by starters Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline, then last year by fast-emerging DeVier Posey, who is a year younger than Sanzenbacher.

Although Sanzenbacher doesn't get the public accolades, his coaches and teammates appreciate him. That's one reason why he was one of the three players coach Jim Tressel chose to bring to the Big Ten preseason meetings.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor? Not here. Posey? Not here. Meet Dane Sanzenbacher.

"Dane is a solid guy," Tressel said. "He's assignment-sound, he's leadership-sound. He's the right kind of role model. He makes plays. He's not flashy, per se, but it's not like he's unnoticeable."

Receiver Dane Sanzenbacher agreed. He said there is a fine line between being motivated to carry on the good name of the program and tensing up because of the pressure that goes along with that — but it's a line he and his teammates are looking forward to toeing.

"It's something we welcome because it's something we've been part of year after year. Ever since I've been here, we've been expected to win the Big Ten championship and at the same time play loose.

"From the time you walk in here, you feel you have a responsibility to all those guys who were here before you to carry on the tradition. You don't want to remembered as the guys who weren't able to get it done."
Above and beyond

Sanzenbacher, who will start opposite DeVier Posey at receiver, ratcheted up his offseason workouts more than normal, Tressel said.

The 6-foot, 180-pounder from Toledo Central Catholic attributed it to nothing more than doing all he can do to make the team better. His regimen, he said, even included honing his sleeping and eating habits.

"I heard one kid say it's ‘ridiculous' how Dane's been training," Tressel said. "When kids say something is ridiculous, that's a good thing. I've learned that."

dane was open a lot last year where he and pryor simply weren't on the same page. dane would go inside and pryor would throw out, or vise versa. they missed hooking up twice in the rose bowl as i recall.

Yeah, Dane is solid at "helping" a new QB. He is probably the least flashy player on the team. His true strength is going across the middle and getting dirty to get an easier dump pass off for the QB. He has the speed to outrun most opponents but doesn't get much chance with his WR role. Its too bad because scouts seem to only care about TD's and highlight reels. Dane reminds me of Hartline in the sense that he will get overlooked by scouts, but the team he lands on will recognize him as a needed "catch and run" player vesus the 5-6 deep threat comptitors they have in camp.
