Sanzenbacher's dream; Central grad had envisioned Big House debut

BY ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR - Dane Sanzenbacher first visited Michigan Stadium during his junior year at Central Catholic. He sat in the upper reaches of the Big House in the corner of the stadium for Michigan's 17-10 upset loss to Notre Dame and envisioned himself one day stepping onto the field as a player.

Sanzenbacher saw that vision come to pass yesterday and again saw the Wolverines lose in his second visit, only this time he had a slightly more memorable vantage point.

Now in his freshman season at Ohio State, Sanzenbacher caught one pass for seven yards in the Buckeyes' 14-3 victory.

"You can't get much better than winning at the Big House," Sanzenbacher said. "It was a great experience, actually just coming up here. You hear about the Big House, you hear about the Big Game. Just to be a part of it was just outstanding."

Enormity of game hits Sanzenbacher

NEW ORLEANS - For the past 50 days, Toledo's Dane Sanzenbacher has been enjoying the ride, going through the rigorous bowl preparations, and then soaking up the bowl experience while following the lead of the veterans on the Ohio State football team.

Yesterday, the freshman wide receiver from Central Catholic walked down the ramp and stepped onto the artificial surface at the Louisiana Superdome, and the magnitude of it all hit him. The Buckeyes will face LSU in the BCS National Championship Game in that facility tomorrow night.

"Since I haven't been through this before, I really had no idea how much goes into the bowl preparation," Sanzenbacher said. "It's all been new, and exciting, but I think it also got a lot more real when we just walked in here."

continued

Dane may be in awe but he's not one to be intimidated by the big game. He has been known for turning up his level of play in the big games. This will be fun to watch. He just needs a few more touches. This is when talent meets opportunity.

Dane didn't play in the NC game but his presence next year along with Ray and Brian H will be known. They're already looking ahead. The '08 recruits will add depth at WR and the young Bucks will make this team even better.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : OSU football: Buckeyes already focused on horizon

"We're a young team, and only better things can come from it," freshman receiver Dane Sanzenbacher said. "Because to get to this point, the national championship game a second straight year, and now with the experience we've gotten -- we obviously had great leadership from the older players, because you don't get to a game like this without that. But with all of the young talent that is just going to keep on building, I think we're in a good place."

Alex Boone said:

"We're sitting here thinking we're going to go right back to work," Boone said. "No more days off. We're going back to work twice as hard, because we know what it takes to get here (to the title game). Now we've got to win it, so it's going to take twice as much.
"And we have a great chance. We have a lot of good kids coming in and a lot of great kids staying. That would be good. That would be a lot of fun."

Let's hope Boone stays. The team will need some leadership. In the meantime, the freshman and sophs gear up for another successful season and dare I say another shot...

Speculating, so maybe Dane runs track for tOSU and joins Chekwa and others to develep his speed. I would hope a few others follow his lead. I seriously doubt if he will lay off very long.

Great Dane is a stud. I was fortunate to see some of him at Central Catholic, and the dude is a straight up playmaker. I have a strong feeling he will make an impact in the 4th quarter of many of OSU's games the next few years. He doesn't look that fast... until he's blowing past you on the corner.

yep... He hasn't really had many balls this year as a WR but not to bad considering his freshman status. How about a switch as a special teams returner or even defensive back, positions he played very well. Everyone will get tired of me talking him up, but he was under-rated defensively. JT will discover this ability one day and wonder where he's been hiding. I've seen him make plays on defense that defy description.

Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of him but he knows how to go up for the ball and get it. I don't know about his footwork and technique but the ballhawking skills are definitely there. He was ridiculous everywhere in high school.

Avon Lake was undefeated until they met TCC and The Great Dane. Dane made a one handed interception and 95 yard TD return that sticks in my mind. That game was off the charts. Do you remember that one? That interception was directly in front of me as we watched the game. Coach Dempsey still talks about it.
