WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Has Sanzenbacher logged any minutes the past few weeks?

I haven't seen hide nor hair of him on the field.

Didn't know if he was banged up or just going through the normal freshman growing pains.

He had a couple of catches, both for about 9 yards, against MSU, I think on the next-to-last-drive.

Kep in mind he's stil coming off a concussion...

Could that be a lingering problem? Or is he just feeling the effects of the tOSU WR depth? He's a freshman, Ray and Brian H are Sophomores. They get the PT because they're higher on the ladder. But maybe, just maybe they (both Dane and Brandon Saine) are being held back for the Illinois and the Michigan games as a little surprise for them

I have no inside info, but didn't Dane play some QB in high school? If so, I wonder if we'll see a WR pass against Michigan.

Yes he was the backup QB and played several games as a senior in that position due to an injury to the primary QB. His first pass in this substitute QB mode went for a TD. Nice touch on a sideline route to another WR.

He could pass it like TGII did last year. Didn't that pass go for a TD?

He could also do a TB, pass it and catch the deflected pass and run around the end.

Coach Hazell talks about our wide receivers, Dane and Taurian as Freshmen. And we thought the Buckeyes were going to have to rely on the ground game this year.

http://www.theozone.net/football/2007/Illinois/receivers.htm

The Buckeyes are now in the position of being able to put three receivers on the field that are threats, and that has prevented opposing defenses from keying on any one of them. They also have some youth that has provided unexpected depth.
"Dane (Sanzenbacher) is very steady," said Hazell of OSU's current fourth receiver.
"As a true freshman he's very steady and I have a lot of confidence in him. Taurean Washington is the fifth guy that I think can help us if we ever need him to."

Post game observation

Dane caught one ball for a first down and 7 yards. Ray had one as well for 8 and Ballard had one for 22. Not to beat a dead horse, but it would have been good to see TB throw a few more short passes, slants and possesion receptions to try to manage ball control in the second half. I'm taking about Dane, Ray, Mo, Brandon and a TE or two going short instead of the long balls that everyone was expecting us to throw. I love them when they work, but hail mary jump balls should be saved, IMO, for those moments when it's all that we can do. That long ball to Robo and INT hurt. At least when when are moving the ball we have a chance to get within FG range if nothing else.

What happened to Brandon Saine? He's clearly showed us he can catch the ball and we know he can run. I think JT needs to coach and allow an offensive coordinator to step in instead of doing this himself.

TB can throw the long ball, there's no question of that. But the game can be won on consecutive first down possessions just as well as big plays.

And that was what was available.. on our 3rd quarter scoring drive.. Todd hit about 5-6 passes for 6-7 yards in that intermediate/short area...

The long ball wasn't there today.. Illinois made sure of it.. but Todd still tried to force it in there..

Maybe, I see things more from a season's perspective. Hartline and Robo were on the receiving end of 8 passes on Saturday. How many were long? The short game needed to be exploited more all season but that's just my opinion. For this past game coverage was very good, but not one ball went to our fastest guy. It's hard to believe Brandon was covered. I know that it's different in the heat of the moment, but I just didn't see us working the short game as much as we should.

How much of Saine's disappearence is due to injury versus being a freshman versus coaching staff not knowing how they want to fully use him yet?

Saine does seem tentative with his knee but then again his style of running is completely different than the other RB's. He will emerge as a great RB as he is tried in new sets. I think the knee will be less of an issue next year but it would be great to see him break one for a TD again (next week). I see a passing play being his crowning moment against tsun. Just my perspective.

Dane on the other hand could easily be a factor given the opportunity. The WR corps has been so solid this year, he hasn't been needed to come forward. We use him and others sparingly becasue we have so much depth but this will change with experience and personnel shifts. With one regular season game left, he may still have his day. More likely to see him emerge next season though.

You want to know what I thought was the best part about Dane's catch? He pushed the Illinois defender back after he was out of bounds, as if to say "back off." The Illinois defenders were pushing our guys around all game, and regularly after the play was over. Most of our guys were just taking it. But our freshman did not.

I haven't watched the replay yet (still getting over the loss), but they must have been taunting us from what you describe. I'm one of those guys that goes back to find the little nuances, I did see Brandon Saine knock a couple of guys back on a few kick off returns. Good blocks, pushing back, just showing a little nastiness reminds me of a song by Guns and Roses. So for those of you who like a musical interlude while they read try this on. Slash, the lead singer has a unique voice and GNR has been a very popular band at the Toledo Speedway Jam in years past. So - Back off Bitch. Enjoy. Michigan Week!

UM VS. OSU: THE RIVALRY
Ex-Central star cast in legendary matchup

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Dane Sanzenbacher first heard about the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry at a very young age. He read a lot concerning it, and he watched it unfold on television many times. But this week, the former Central Catholic standout will live it. Sanzenbacher and his Ohio State teammates are preparing to face the Wolverines on Saturday in Ann Arbor, and the freshman wide receiver for the Buckeyes is experiencing the build up to the big game here at ground zero.

"For any kid growing up in Ohio, you looked forward to the Ohio State-Michigan game like it was another holiday. No matter how the season had gone, it was always the biggest game," Sanzenbacher said here yesterday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, where the Buckeyes train.
