WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

OPPORTUNITY: The fallout from the Hawkins injury trickles down to former Ohio State receiver Dane Sanzenbacher.

The third-year pro was added to the roster with two weeks remaining last season after being claimed off waivers from Chicago.

With Hawkins temporarily out, as well as Marvin Jones and A.J. Green sidelined, many repetitions in the slot slide to him. That?s never the way any player wants to receive playing time, but any opportunity to show off skills to both the Bengals and the other 31 teams in the league can prove critical.

?Coaches have done a pretty good job of spacing things out pretty evenly, but I would say with three guys down, you are going to have to add on reps to everybody,? Sanzenbacher said. ?More reps is always good. It?s a bad thing whenever you have a guy go down. As far as I know it?s not overly serious, but it?s opportunities, so good thing for us.?

Dane had the best night of anyone out there. Sure it's preseason but being as objective as possible as Bengals fan, I want him in our 5 receiver rotation over quite a few guys...in my eyes, only Green and Hawkins are sure things. I like Dane better than Tate and he is right there with Sanu and Jones. I've never been impressed much with Whalen and I didn't see much from Cobi Hamilton.

One more steady performance from Dane and I think/hope he makes the cut and contributes. I really think he can do good things for the Bengals and in big time situations.

Obviously I'd like for Dane to make the Bengals, but I think it'll be tough for him to do so. You've got Green, Hawkins, Sanu, and Jones as roster locks, which leaves 2 spots for the remaining guys. I think one spot is up for grabs between Dane/Tate and one spot is up for grabs between Whalen/Hamilton. If the coaching staff can feel comfortable with some combo of Dane/Bernard handling return duties, then Dane being a superior WR will give him the job. If they keep Tate to do returns, I don't think Dane will be able to beat out Whalen/Hamilton due to their value on kickoff/punt coverage units.

The possibility that Hawkins misses 6 - 8 weeks with his injury does work in Dane's favor, as there isn't a true backup slot among the 4 locks and he is the best pure slot out of the four remaining.

I find Tate to be garbage returning the ball...Dane would be a big improvement there (and Adam Jones). Tate and Whalen have not impressed me much but they must show to the coaches, as they seem to love both of them. Hamilton was drafted late and he has potential, but he is far from a lock. Aside from Green, Hawkins, Sanu, and Jones, nobody stands out to me but Dane. I really think we can use him this year. Hopefully Dane continues to light it up and proves he should make the cut.

Round Table: Dane Sanzenbacher and the team's return game

After some rest and relaxation following Cincinnati's 34-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, the Cincy Jungle crew gathered around the table, with our french cappuccinos, to discuss various subjects based on Thursday's game.
Based on last night's game, Dane Sanzenbacher will make the 53-man roster.

Nick Seuberling: I can't deny what he did last night. Played well against some two's and three's.
Mickey Mentzer: Brandon Tate did make a good catch in traffic, but we all know he has made this team in the past because of his kick return ability. In a small sample, we have seen Sanzenbacher prove that he has the ability to return punts (71 yards for a touchdown) and make catches (36-yard touchdown reception in the seem). I believe that the decision falls between those two for the final spot.
Josh Kirkendall: The only counter, Mickey, I have about the return is that Brandon Tate was the only kickoff returner. And I don't see Tate and Sanzenbacher being on this roster in Chicago.
Mickey: Tate was, but that role could also be filled by Bernard Scott / Giovanni Bernard.
Nick: It's still going to be tough for Dane to make this team. Lot of guys injured right now.

Andrew Miller: It is a small sample. And, for whatever reason, the Bengals seem to love Brandon Tate. I don't know that this one game equates to Sanzenbacher replacing Tate. But will the coaches be taking Sanzenbacher's performance seriously? I have to believe they will.
Josh: At the very least, increasing his overall participation earlier on special teams for a greater sample size.

Mickey: Most of us Ohio State fans know how sure-handed he is. I have a ton of confidence in him for the return game, and also would love to see him in the slot at times.

Nick: But does he make the top-six receivers on this team? I'm not sure that he does.
Josh: We have Green, Hawkins, Sanu, and Jones as locks. That's two spots. Are we assuming that Cobi Hamilton is a lock too? It's a crowded position and Ryan Whalen is a good receiver that can't be lost in this.
Mickey: I like Sanzenbacher over Whalen.
Nick: He outplayed Whalen and Hamilton last night and his special teams versatility certainly helps. We know Marvin looks for that. That's why Whalen made the team a year ago because of his special teams play in the preseason. I think we can all agree the jury is still out though, lets see how he does the next two weeks.

Just watching the Hard Knocks episode now, love seeing John Gruden get all excited about Dane. For those who don't watch it, John was sitting down with Marvin Lewis, Jay Gruden and a handful of other Coaches and Jay brought up Dane, and John got excited talking about him.
