WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Dane will be wearing No. 11 for the Bengals. He will have a heck of a following in Cincinnati. Hope he studies the playbook well and finds himself in the mix against the Ravens.

not as much as you think, a lot of bengals fans hate Ohio St, and usually any player from OSU

and unless injury, I don't see him getting one snap on the offensive side this week

Huge pickup, I love it. With Sanu on IR and with the Bengals likely playing backups on Sunday against the Ravens, Dane should get some work. I like this pickup long-term as well...personally I think he is a much quicker Whalen that can be used on the edge, or a very worthy mix-up in the slot with Hawkins (who seems prone to minor injuries and could open the door). Outside of Green and Hawkins (to some extent), the Bungles have nothing at WR, so this is a great pickup for them.

The Bengals fans may hate OSU players but as he makes his presence known and gets a key catch, keeps a drive alive, or scores a TD, they will learn to love him.

Dane Sanzenbacher: Sanzenbacher a Jordan Shipley 'clone'?
Dane Sanzenbacher - WR - CIN - Jun. 3

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Bengals coaches view WR Dane Sanzenbacher as a "clone" to pre-injury Jordan Shipley in the slot.
Shipley, who is now with the Jaguars, posted a 52/600/3 line for the Bengals as a rookie in 2010 before tearing up his knee early in 2011. Andrew Hawkins is locked into the slot for 2013, but perhaps the Bengals view Sanzenbacher as a potential replacement if they decide not to tender Hawkins a contract next offseason. Hawkins is a vastly superior player. Jun. 3

SIX VS. SEVEN AT WR
Last year the Bengals kept seven wide receivers going into the season, but with the potential of keeping four tight ends they look to be headed back to the traditional six. And if you figure that Green, Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones and Andrew Hawkins are locks and Brandon Tate is a virtual lock until someone else emerges in both return games, then that is quite a battle for the final spot.

At the moment, the completion looks heated between a pair of sixth-round picks, Cobi Hamilton (2013) and Ryan Whalen (2011), as well as third-year man Dane Sanzenbacher, last year's Christmas Day pickup off waivers.

"Cobi has done some good things; Ryan Whalen has made some plays. It's going to be tough to let any of them go," Gruden says.

Ex-Central star ready for next test
Sanzenbacher heading to Bengals training camp
BY STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Anyone who has followed the football career of former Central Catholic and Ohio State standout receiver Dane Sanzenbacher knows a couple things for certain.

First, the odds have always seemed to be stacked against him as a relatively diminutive 5-foot-11, 184-pounder with decent but not lightning speed.

And, second, despite what Sanzenbacher lacks physically, it has never proved to be a good bet to count him out.

The former two-time All-Ohioan and OSU?s 2010 most valuable player is two weeks away from beginning his third NFL training camp, this time with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sanzenbacher, who made the Chicago Bears? roster as an undrafted free agent in 2011, had 27 receptions for 276 yards and three touchdowns his rookie season.

Last year was much different. He got pushed back in a numbers game at wide receiver and saw greatly reduced field time. He had just one catch for seven yards in four games before being traded to the Bengals on Christmas day.

?I probably learned more my second year than I did my first,? Sanzenbacher said. ?My rookie year I kind of got thrown into it and my head was just spinning. Even though the numbers don?t show it, I think I progressed as a player that second year.

?You take that experience and carry it on to the next year. I?m getting a fresh start in Cincinnati. You carry over the confidence you?ve gained, and all the little things you?ve learned. It?s my third year, and I think it?s a good time for me to progress. I think it?s really going to be a good situation for me.?

Now in the final year of his rookie contract ? which pays him approximately $460,000 a year ? Sanzenbacher will start camp as one of 10 current Bengal receivers on the preseason roster bidding for six jobs. Other candidates may be added before or during camp.

?At this point you don?t want to let yourself get so excited about camp that you burn yourself out,? Sanzenbacher said of his offseason workout routine. ?It?s a long season. You?ve got four preseason games and then 17 weeks. You just want to make sure you?re as healthy and ready to go as possible. You have to be as physically and mentally as ready as you can be when you walk in the door.?

Cincinnati Bengals: Should WR Dane Sanzenbacher Make the Team?
Wide Receiver Dane Sanzenbacher is Working Hard to Make a Spot on the Bengals' Roster
Yahoo! Contributor Network
By Tyler Waddell | Yahoo! Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | Dane Sanzenbacher has always been an underrated player.

Despite an illustrious career at Toledo Central Catholic High School, he earned just a three-star rating by Rivals.com and was offered by mainly mid-major schools, such as Ball State and Miami (Oh.).

But former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel saw something different and offered the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Maumee (Oh.) native a scholarship, and Sanzenbacher didn't disappoint. He compiled 115 catches for 1,792 yards (15.6 yards per catch) and 18 touchdowns throughout his four-year collegiate career.

Sanzenbacher then again slipped through the cracks, signing with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He had a surprisingly effective role early on in his rookie season, catching 17 balls for 159 yards and three scores through his first seven games (off 21 targets).

However, his production and playing time completely dropped off and he was ultimately traded to Cincinnati on Christmas Day of 2012 to add some playoff depth.

"I probably learned more my second year than I did my first," Sanzenbacher told The Blade. "My rookie year I kind of got thrown into it and my head was just spinning. Even though the numbers don't show it, I think I progressed as a player that second year.

"You take that experience and carry it on to the next year. I'm getting a fresh start in Cincinnati. You carry over the confidence you've gained, and all the little things you've learned. It's my third year, and I think it's a good time for me to progress. I think it's really going to be a good situation for me."

If Sanzenbacher wants to keep a job within the Queen City walls, he's going to have to prove himself worthy once again. The Bengals have six openings at the wide receiver position, and it's pretty clear that A.J. Green, Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones, and Andrew "Baby Hawk" Hawkins have their roles locked.

Sanzenbacher will battle with five-year veteran Brandon Tate (who recently signed a one-year deal), rookies Cobi Hamilton, Roy Roundtree and Tyrone Goard, and second-year player Taveon Rogers for the fifth and sixth spots on the depth chart.

"I don't really count the numbers," Sanzenbacher said. "Who knows what's going to happen through the next couple months. We've got a lot of talented guys. In my opinion, [the receiving corps] is pretty stacked.

"It's going to be a battle, but there's a lot of things that play out during camp, and it'll be in my control."
